One of my fondest RPG memories is Shadowrun for the SNES, I just loved the way it played. There was a sequel which never came to be and I'd like to play something like that in the near future. So are there any games on any platform that are like that? All suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks all.

There's another Shadowrun for the Sega Genesis. It's different in a lot of ways, but still just as good. It seems less story driven to me, but it also seems to get across the experience of being a Shadowrunner better and it has a better hacking game.

There is a another Shadowrun that was out on Sega CD in Japan. There was a group working on a translation for it to English. But it has been a bit since then so i'm not holding my breath. I was so pumped at the need of the SNES shadowrun when they had the announcement for shadowrun 2. Then to see the crap that Microsoft put out for the 360 just ticks me off that they own the rights and won't ever do anything good with it.
Sigh.......

You might find Ultima 8 (PC) appealing. I tended to dislike it and Shadowrun for pretty similar reasons, so maybe you'll wind up liking it :)

It's funny how Shadowrun on Genesis got dumped on hard by magazines at the time and now it's generally considered the better of the two games.

I always liked Syndicate not exactly the same game, but, worth a look.

I would also suggest the Genesis game. Like that one better myself.

How about Fallout 1 and 2?

This might be a stretch, but Wasteland for the PC, and its sequel.

Syndicate Wars > Shadowrun SNES > Syndicate

Never played the 360 or Genesis version of Shadowrun, but the SNES game is awesome.

Not unrelated: Was there any way you could shoot and run in the game? Or rather, shoot while running.

You could try Nightshade for the NES. It was developed by the people who later made Shadowrun, and the two games share some ideas: a large city to explore, a focus on item-collecting, and a similar style of humor. They differ in gameplay, though, since Nightshade is more of an adventure game with occasionally frustrating battles.

Unfortunately no, I think. Whenever you pulled out your gun, the cursor appeared on screen. You had to move the cursor to the enemy you wanted to shoot at(like how light gun games are played without the light gun.)

Shadowrun SNES... I did enjoy that game. I only played it as a rental back in the day, but I often question why I don't now own it. I'd play it again in a heartbeat, cortex bomb and all!

-----

In regards to U8 that was mentioned, I played that again just a couple months ago. Great game considering it's a low-res 3/4 perspective game (they made up for the low-res in colour). I never played any of the other Ultima games though... I know.. sacrilege! Soon after replaying it I learned about hackmoving objects in the game... pure awesomeness. Too bad they never made the expansion. :(

A word about U8 though: It's a bitch to run through windows. You'll need a 3rd party shell program... The best I could find was a freeware prog called DOSBox I believe. Worked well for me. The game still bugged out once or twice, but otherwise it worked great.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Fallout is awesome too... though not really in quite the same way as Shadowrun. If you only play one, play Fallout 2... it remedies many of the first games failings, though both are great.

Nightshade is awesome, loved that game as a kid, though I never finished it, have a CIB somewhere in my house and really should give it a go.

Has anyone played Restricted Area for the PC? That looks ok.

I'll third Nightshade. One of my favorite games of all time. I mentioned it in a previous thread Shadowrun was brought up in. Didn't think it was a similar game.

Still, the game is great. Wish there would have been sequels.

There was one PC game I ended up playing. I was a bit young so I didn't get it much. The game played in a sortof first person perspective, kindof like a text based area but you saw the picture of where you were and then you clicked on the area to enter the places or go to the next area, etc.

When going to different areas you met people who spoke different languages and then would end up owning you because it seemed everyone carried a machine gun while you carried a weak pistol.

If you like the Cyber Punk setting then you'd probably love Blade Runner (PC), Snatcher (Sega CD), And Rise of the Dragon (Sega CD). All three are point and clicks though not RPGs.

I actually do love the cyberpunk genre (I've beaten Snatcher and Rise of the Dragon SCD multiple times) Im actually looking for the style of game that Shadowrun was. It was an unorthodox RPG which I really liked. Possibly the only RPG I have beaten more than once. I want to pick up Blade runner some time but it just hasnt been on my radar lately.

Blade Runner's awesome.

But Shadowrun is sort of an odd RPG, I can't really think of anything like it except maybe Ultima since it's already been mentioned. The Quest for Glory series is another sort of Adventure/RPG hybrid though.

Shadowrun for the SNES was just awesome. And you'll never finding anything close to it, sadly.

Hmmm... I never really considered Shadowrun to be an RPG. Probably because I like it so much and generally don't like RPG's. I guess it was based on a board game or paper RPG though (wasn't it?) that was heavily on Neuromancer(good book btw). I wouldn't really recommend the Neuromancer game though but it does follow the story more or less. It just feels really dated.

Anyways, I'll third Nightshade...or is it forth now?

My brother was into Shadow Run when I was alot younger. One of the game books was pretty awesome if you ask me. Colored and looked amazing(a coupe hundred pages, atleast 200+, it was pretty thick.) All I did was look through the book, never played it.

For a decent game, they sure messed up with not being able to do anything if moving.

I love Blade Runner. That should come up more often when people are talking about great adventure games.

If you are just looking for another unorthodox RPG, independent of a Cyberpunk setting, then I would also recommend Fallout 1 and 2 and also Planescape: Torment. Those are three of my favorite games of all time because they offer interesting settings, good storytelling and more player choice than most games, which is how they feel like Shadowrun to me.

I remember Shadowrun for the SNES being one of the first games I played where you could shoot random pedestrians. My brother got a huge kick out gunning down a guy who had been rude to him, and I thought of that when I played Fallout. It was like that taste of freedom from your standard (at leas on consoles at the time) RPG grind and conventions that I saw in Shadowrun SNES had matured and expanded into something great. It felt like I had finally found the game I had been looking for since I first played Shadowrun SNES.
