I will refer to the DIGITAL VIDEO CARTRIDGE as D.V.C. from this point on.....
OK, I have a 3DO, MAGNAVOX yop loader WITHOUT a D.V.C.
I MAY be getting a CDi WITH a D.V.C.
My questions are as follows:
1. Does either system have titles that do not work at all without the D.V.C?
2. The 3DO seems to have decent FMV overall so WHAT is the D.V.C. for?
3. Does either system have exclusive titles that use the D.V.C?
4. What are the advantages/disadvantages of having the D.V.C. for each system?
Any other opinions and comments regarding these systems and their D.V.c's are welcome and appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!!!

I think that the CDi has a good number of games that will not work without the D.V.C. I don't know about the 3D0 though.

As stated above, the CDi has quite a few games which require the DVC while the 3do has none that I know of. The DVC for the 3do was essentially designed for the Asian market where MPEG1 VCD titles were popular for a short time. The unit was available for the US Goldstar unit and by mail order for the Panasonic unit in the US as well, but other than for collector's value, there wasn't too much point in owning them.

Who Shot Johnny Rock? and Mad Dog McCree are two good examples.
The CD-i also had movies you needed an FMV for. They were kind of a precursor to DVD. Most movies came on 2 CDs and were encoded in MPEG-1, which was about VHS quality.

As far as the CD-i goes, a good amount of them require the DVC.
In my collection, the ones that do require it include the following:
Clue
Litil Divil
Mad Dog McCree (already mentioned)
Space Ace
World Cup Golf Hyatt Dorado Beach
The ones that don't need it include the following:
Caesar's World of Gambling
Escape from Cybercity
Power Hitter
The Wacky World of Miniature Golf
Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon
I still don't own a DVC so I haven't played the titles up top.

OK, SO.....I am getting that some titles on CD-i require the FMV cart to run but on 3D0 it is not necessary to run or improve any titles but just to play VCD's then?

Yes, the 3DO (and Saturn IIRC) only have the MPEG expansion to use with Video CD's. The CD-i MPEG expansion is also used to play Video CD's as well but it is also widely used as an hardware extension in other CD-i software, ie games and encyclopedias. If you're discovering the CD-i format, you definatelly should get the DVC cartridge to enjoy the best games, like Solar Crusade, The Lost Ride, Creature Shock, the 7th Guest, Atlantis The Last resort, Brain Dead 13, The Last Bounty Hunter. Those are the best (but rare and perhaps unknown) CD-i games (ALL require the DVC cartridge).

Some games on the Saturn use the MPEG card like Gungriffon.
