Forgive me if this has been posted before. This is a Sega Saturn commercial from back in the day that I never really understood... UNTIL NOW.

Perhaps THE GREATEST commercial ever made. Kudos to the Sega of old. Oh how I miss old school gaming commercials like this.

The guy exploding really is the funniest thing ever. The fact it is an obvious dummy makes it 10x the funny. LOL

You'd never seen those before? Huh? When they were released they were considered a step backwards from the Genesis Days. No Welcome to the Next Level, and most importantly no SEGA scream. In fact, the Scream came back in the Dreamcast days, mostly due to the fans calling for it.

They still used the Sega Scream in the Saturn days. Several of them used an amorphous blue face doing it and morphing into the Saturn logo.

You can see it in these ads:
Saturn vs. Plaything (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrcIu4UlmmI)
Saturn vs. Pretendo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP6RuTte_g0)
3 free games (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2ncjKa1lOY&NR=1)
Fighting Vipers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEBVe0IbqNc)
NiGHTS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iH1Flaq24M) (alternate coloring)
early ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Lqhu1wCpPk) before the blue guy, with a cockroach
another early-ish ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_V0nZUzds0) without the blue guy, touting VF2 and the new $249 price point

Not that these ads are all amazing -- I don't know anyone who was convinced by "three processors means better gameplay". And what is up with the Fighting Vipers ad? Still, they did use the Sega Scream. They even called one of their demo discs "Sega Screams Vol. 1" (I don't think there was a vol. 2).

I remember seeing a Saturn commercial once but I was pretty little... Between 4 - 7 years old. Cant remember exactly what game it was though.

Thanks for this... a nice trip down memory lane. I especially remember the one with the cockroach. Classic. But yeah, even back in the day I didn't care for the Blue Head guy.

Yeah, you can tell they were trying to go the "Blast Processing" route by boasting the 3 processors, but I think the cat was out of the bag right from Saturn's quick launch at E3 that Sega was scared and thus could no longer play the superiority card. It's a shame, though...I always enjoyed the confrontational nature of their ads, they certainly left an impression.

I've seen the "Fly, Plaything, Fly" add tons of times, but that was the first time I saw the Pretendo...I never knew that one existed. Pretty humorous.

While I do admire the commercial from the original post, it definitely was polarizing and a bit too off-the-wall compared to Sega's usual marketing dominance, which is yet another reason why the Saturn got off on the wrong foot here in North America.
