View Full Version : Holy Grail of gaming found tonight

So, I talked to a guy I do business with the other day, and in the course of conversation, it comes up that I collect video games for home consoles. He says to me he has thousands of games in the basement. "Thousands?" say I.
"Thousands." he replies.
So I tell him I will call this weekend, and get together with him to see what he really has.
Long and short of it, I call him tonight, and he's home.
I roll on over there after work, I happened to be in the area. I get there, he takes me down into the basement, and the first thing I see is a Coca-Cola case (that you'd keep 20 oz. bottles in) full of longbox PSX games, maybe 25 or so with a bunch of SNES boxed games, and a couple Saturn games in there.
As we are going into the basement, he tells me the story of a small game store we used to have around here years ago, that ended up going out of business. When it did, he bought ALL the inventory. Store shelves, stock, fixtures, etc.
So, after spotting the one box, he opens the closet. (I wish I had pics to show you all). Those same Coke cases, stacked floor to ceiling, double-stacked to the wall, LOADED with games. There is, by what I saw, nothing newer than those longbox PSX and the Saturn games. I would estimate maybe 4000 games or so. I could be wrong.
I saw (just at a glance) Playstation, imports, Saturn, NES, SNES, 2600, Jaguar, 32x, Sega CD, just to name (I am sure) a few. Most everything is boxed, some are still sealed. I haven't brought it home yet, it's going to take a bit, but I will be hitting some folks up for ID's on the import stuff (I know next-to nothing about import titles).
My current collection is around 1100 games, and I think I will have at least doubled my collection by the time this is all said and done.
Stay tuned, there (almost definitely) will be some stuff for sale, as I am positive there HAS to be dupes in there.
Now, if there's a boxed Stadium Events in there.....I will post pics at some point (it'll be a while, don't hang on the edge of your seat)

I don't get it. Your story has some plot holes. It goes from "guy owns a ton of games" to "I haven't brought it home yet." Did you buy them all/some? If so, did you buy them just to resell? Are the games even for sale by the guy? Is he the kind of person who understands the value of this stuff, or is he just some dude who happened to fall backwards into buying up the stock of a failing business?
Regardless, it sounds pretty great, so get some pics!

If you get this stuff for dirt cheap be prepared to be called an a-hole and a bunch of other names because you somehow ripped off this poor guy. Usually happens when people score insane deals.

05-03-2009, 01:05 AM
Wait, so did you buy it or not?
shawnbo42
05-03-2009, 01:07 AM
Already prepared for that, thanks. About the move, yeah, I guess that makes sense. Should've thought of that myself. As far as the "plot holes", yes, I did buy the stuff, but between working on two houses, work 6 days a week, 3 kids, and life in general, it's going to take a little time to get it all home and sorted out. So, as time permits, I will post pics, it'll just be a little while is all.
And, no I didn't buy just to re-sell, I bought to complimemt my collection, and probably sell what I already have.
To the last comment, who knows, maybe there is a NWC in there? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I'd love to know who has cash lying around for 2,000-4,000 games and how much the guy accepted for all of it...that still has to be a pretty penny.

he's not hating on glover, glover is worth less than $3 so if you dropped hundreds or thousands of dollars on someone's collection, finding tons of copies of a worthless game would be horrible.

that would be awsome, their are so many uses for duck hunt, coasters, dartboards, dominos, gifts for people you hate, scrap metal/plastic, nintendo ds game holder, a canvas, a door mat, a stress toy, you could hide weed in it, or you could make a necklace out of it, or you could smash it up into little pieces and make a puzzle out of it, or you could use it as a cat toy if the gun is included, or you could use it as a firestarter, the possabilities are endless

He's a guy who's into a little of everything, and over the years ended up with this deal. Owns a lot of property, owns multiple businesses, partner in many other businesses, etc. He bought the stuff, I believe, meaning to resell, and never got to it. So, now it's time to move it.

sounds like an amazing find, great job! Are you going to post up some pics, and how much it cost you total?
The thing that people fail to realize is that nobody is an expert in all fields. You would have to be knowledgeable in a MILLION hobbies in order to not get "ripped off" ever. For example, I guarantee not all of you are into coins, and having the experience of collecting coins when I was younger, I know when I stumble across valuable change...many of you do not. Does it mean you are getting ripped off any time you sell ANYthing outside your field of expertise? No, because things are worth different amounts to hobbyists and enthusiasts.
That's my take at least :)

Congrats and thanks for sharing. I hope you get all the surprises you are looking for. Nothing better than an unexpected find. Man the excitement of looking into each case. With finds like these it might take months to siff through and collect the data. The more you pull the deeper it will probably go. LOL .

That is why I am multi hobby person. I learned about coin collecting and every so often read about it. Though I know about cars, baseball, antiques, doll collecting, glassware, view masters, vintage toys, records, and a lot more random stuff. I just keep teaching myself more and more things. Prime example about an item. I had no idea what a ZX80 computer was. I found one at a garage sale last weekend for $2, I took it home, checked ebay for completed listing, last sold for $80 in complete. Also I wiki it and checked out all the back history to it as well.

It doesn't really do us a lot of good without prices, pictures, and/or descriptions.
Was this a RETAIL game store, a USED game store, or a RENTAL place? Is the collection mostly sealed? What percentages are what systems? Define "imports," and describe the quantity.
If you're going to be selling anything for minor profit, please let me know if there's a Mega Man X2 in there. That's MY holy grail and it sounds like you're looking at the right era.

Yeah, I don't see why you'd start this thread and not share at the very least the price you paid if you aren't going to share pictures yet.
Fuyukaze
05-05-2009, 12:26 AM
I'm not interested in if you paid too much or too little but pics would be definitly appreciated. Maybe later on once you've got it settled and filled in your own holes in your collection, a cheap games sale would be appreciated as well but that can come later. For now, any kind of pics would be nice.
Also, if you did manage to get a great deal, gloating about it will only get you ugly comments. People have a nasty habbit of not caring what's true or not anymore. Just the hint they missed out on a chance to screw someone else over on something they feel should have been their chance to do the same only brings out the jerk in them. Plus, gloating about ripping someone off tends to make you look bad cause who wants to deal with someone with a record for cheating others? Also, reguardless what you paid, 2-3 posts later someone will come around and try topping it claiming to have bought it for $2. Doesnt matter what it is, $2 is the golden price at every yard sale, flea market, or pawn shop.

I wasn't posting this to gloat about anything, and I'm not looking for attention. If anything, I am more of a lurker than a spotlight kinda guy. I just posted this thinking other like-minded folks might share in the enthusiasm of finding a really good score, the same as I might be happy for someone that finds that super rare or proto game at the flea market/yard sale for a measly dollar or two. Wasn't looking to start a war here.
I *WILL* post pics, just as soon as I get all the stuff moved from there to here, and once it's all sorted out, I am sure there will be games available for sale. As to what those titles are, I won't know until I sort out everything, and as I already posted earlier, I do not have tons of spare time, so it could be a little while. Please be patient.
For those of you who posted your congrats and whatnot, thank you. That was the kind of reaction I had expected.
As for selling games, when the time comes, they will be available at reasonable rates. I am not looking for top dollar Ebay prices, and I am not going to give the stuff away either. But I will do my best to accurately describe everything, and I will try and sell everything as fairly as possible. Again, please be patient with me. My wife tries to be understanding, but I have a VERY busy work schedule, and I have 3 children who are not yet school age, and I need to have some time with them also.
Once more, pics will be posted at some point, I just don't know when right now. Thanks everybody for understanding in advance, stay tuned, and have a great day!!

There is no reason to be posting that lovelyness in here. I'll be glad to lock this until he gets pics taken and feels the desire to share what he spent since you all can't play nice. Nothing constructive to say? Don't click that post button.
Personally I think its a tad lame to post a 'end all be all' finds thread and then not go into any detail, because it just creates friction like this, just like when we get those Stadium Events for a quarter ect type threads, we here in annominity land tend to distrust everything posted when it involves grand claims. It's understood, but until the OP does something to change that, just leave er be ok?

After you take the pic, you need to resize it. If you're using a digital camera, when you open up the picture, whatever "viewer" it opens it will usually have a feature that lets you change the size, then save it with a new title. If not, MS Paint also has a feature where you can change the size. Just make sure that the largest side is no bigger than 800 pixels.
NayusDante
05-05-2009, 11:45 PM
Flickr is great for automatically resizing an image. Everything you upload gets put into several sizes, so you can post small ones that link to large ones.
I'm looking forward to seeing this. Regardless of what there is, I think it's going to deserve a story in the DP Lore book.

Heh, seems like you can base the quality of a find based on the reaction you get:
Your run-of-the-mill good find: no one comments
A really good find: some mild congratulations and somebody asking to buy it off of you
An amazing find: people jokingly insult you and say they hate you
An unbelievably amazing find: people get pissy and question your morals
A one-of-a-kind (possibly nonexistent) find: ends in violence and butter
By my unofficial, uneducated scale, you got yourself one crazy haul, so congratulations. :) I'll agree with earlier sentiments that it's not really a "holy grail", as that would such a single, exceptionally rare item. I think it would be more fitting to call this a mother lode, hehe. Enjoy picking through it all. I think the most exciting part is not knowing what treasures you may come across.
