View Full Version : Announcing the official Digital Press LORE book!

One of the most popular parts of the various Digital Press Guides is the LORE section. And one question that's been asked over the years is "will there ever be a book consisting solely of LORE stories?" Until now, though, there has not been a concrete answer.

Today, I'm happy to announce that the answer is in fact yes. Joe and I have been discussing the particulars, and we're ready to start taking submissions.

This is where you come in. Anyone interested in contributing a story to be published in the book feel free to submit it to gradiusone@yahoo.com with the subject heading "DP LORE Book Entry". If you'd like to get an idea of what a LORE story is like (this, of course, is assuming you've never read one of the guides), just go here (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=36) or here (http://www.digitpress.com/archives/arc00069.htm) and take a look. The deadline for all submissions is September 20, 2009. There is no scheduled release date yet, but you can expect that to be announced in the near future.

Here's some basic rules, more to follow once Joe and I work them out:

-You write up a non-fictional account of some gaming moment, memory, event, or recollection, then send it to me. This post should be in essay form (we will help with the editing) and most importantly should be as ENTERTAINING as possible. It doesn't necessarily have to be funny - but intrigue makes for good reading, and good reading increases the chance that you'll be published.
- Your story can be as long as you'd like but in the past we've always preferred stories that take up less than a full page in 10pt text.
- Grammar, spelling, editing all count but we will assist. It just gets you points if the thing is written well because that means it reads well right out of the gate.
- We ask that your story be truthful. You can embellish, of course, but wild unbelieveable stories are usually cast aside.

I'm looking forward to reading what you send in! Good luck!

First and most obvious question: Will any of the entries already submitted in the now-locked Lore section of the forum need to be re-submitted for reconsideration in this new expanded tome?

I like to submit 1-2 stories, but what's the time limit for submissions?

At the moment, these entries aren't being considered for the book. They (or at least the ones selected as the winners) have been slated for the upcoming Guide, and we're trying to avoid repetition here. We want to see some all new stories.

Granted, this may change, depending on certain factors. I'll keep everyone posted.

Currently there's not a official deadline, but I'm going to say two months. Again, I'll post what the official deadline is once it's been decided.

Oh, so the Lore section to the new guide is still planned, and this new endeavor does not supplant that, but rather expands on it? Keen. (/me sharpens keyboard)

What will the title be? You know you have to have a really clever/awesome title for a book like this.

Yep, that sums it up pretty well. :)

I'm open to suggestions. Right now it's just the Digital Press LORE book. Joe has the last word as far as the title is concerned, of course, along with full approval over the stories and cover artwork.

The deadline has been decided: July 15. That's two months from today, so if you haven't gotten your stories to me by then, you're out of luck.

I look forward to reading your submissions!

My story from the Lore section isn't eligible for the upcoming Guide because I chose to write about a "modern" system when they were only looking for threads from the "Classic" era.

So you could certainly consider mine! :)

Nope, hbkprm.

I'd suggest:

"Collectors At Play: Digital Press Stories"

or possibly reverse the two ("Digital Press Stories: Collectors At Play").

Toss me the link when you get a chance then. :)

Not bad. Again, though, the final decision is up to Joe.

Okay, we're less than a month away from the deadline, and the response has been... well... kind of underwhelming. The few that have sent in entries have sent good ones, but those few do not an entire book make. So come on guys... hit me with your stories!

I think I'll name my entry

"Diary of a classic gaming addict: How trying to save a few quarters cost me $17,000"

I'm going to have to dig deep to come up with something for this. I put all my good Commodore stories in Commodork (http://www.robohara.com/Commodork[/url), all my good arcade stories in Invading Spaces (http://www.robohara.com/InvadingSpaces[/url), and have submitted Lore stories to the old DP guide and the DP Lore section. I hate to say it but I'm starting to run out of stories!

Have you considered posting submissions guidelines to other forums like Atari Age or J2 Games?

Or maybe even some writers' forums? I'm sure there are lots of freelance writers out there with some gaming experience who would love to have the opportunity to get published in your book.

Ack, been so busy over in B&S I forgot to come back in and reply here. We're past the deadline, but since I still don't have much to work with, I'm extending it another couple of months, until 9/20/09. If I don't have anything else by then, that might be it for this project. Stay tuned.

@Flack - yeah, I can certainly see how you're running out! As it is, I exhausted most of my good ones with MoaVC, but I still have a few left that haven't seen the light of day.

@8bitgamer - actually, no. I didn't consider any of that simply because to me, it would feel like spam if I were to do that. Also, I don't have the time to establish myself as a member on any new forums so it wouldn't feel like spam, what with all I have going on at the moment.

However, if anyone else is a member on any other gaming forums and wants to ask around for submissions, I don't have a problem with that.

Hey, I wrote the Narrow NEScape story back in '07...was there ever an announcement of who got picked and who didn't yet? Did I miss that somewhere?

It's been a while since I last updated this thread, so it's time for some news.

Unless there are some more submissions, or Joe lets me reprint all of the old LORE entries from the out-of-print guides, this is dead in the water. I did get a fair number of submissions, but only enough to fill about fifty pages or so. My own submissions would only bring the page count up by ten, maybe twelve.

So that's where this stands. So until something gives either way, this project is DOA.
