Welcome to the Fantasy Zone... GET READY!

OK, SMS jokes aside, I found a link to an archived thread from 2002.

Top 20 Sega MAster System Games

http://www.digitpress.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-1484.html

Oddly enough, I didn't post in that thread.

Are you looking for US released games? European? There were 114 US released games and over 300 European. The system was successful overseas and lasted many years longer.

Some must haves:

Alex Kidd In Miracle World, Shinobi, Phantasy Star, Space Harrier, Fantasy Zone, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, Zillion, Action Fighter, Golden Axe Warrior.

Hope this has helped.

Don't forget the SMS Sonic games which are a completely different kettle of fish to the 16-bit ones (and better than the Game Gear versions due to being developed for the larger screen). Sonic 2 in particular is still a bone-crunchingly hard challenge even today.

Although all of my Master System game experience has been with the Game Gear ports, I'll still list my favorites:

Castle of Illusion
Legend of Illusion
Deep Duck Trouble
Land of Illusion

I'm not terribly familiar with the SMS, but I did get the 3-D goggles for it a couple years back. Just recently I was able to get a copy of Outrun 3-D for it. Apparently a NTSC version of this game was only released in Canada. What the hell were they thinking? I can't say I've played it much beyond testing but the 3-D aspect of it is pretty cool.

Looking forward to exploring this system as a whole.

I like the game, but it was too hard (talking about when going up to defeat Gorza). I did finish it a few times, though.

Love it. Best version of the game IMHO. Although, the Commodore 64 version was great too. Stay away from the NES port. Nauseating.

It might be weird, but my favorite version was the 2600 version!

Simple and clean. :)

I'm not much of an SMS expert (really has few enough games to compete with the top NES / FC titles, and the top ones don't really feel as good as the best of the NES crop, IMO), but here's my own favorites, thus far:

* Aleste / Power Strike
MSX2 version is apparently better though, has a different stage order and possibly less slowdown, though I wouldn't bet on it. Great music when played on a JPN SMS or a Mark III with the FM music module at least!)

* Alex Kidd in Shinobi World

* Power Strike II
Not to be confused with Power Strike II on the GG, aka GG Aleste II, which is probably the better game save for the screen of the hardware it's on

* Ninja Gaiden
Haven't played it much, but it seems a winner.

* Kenseiden
Ditto, but should be a decent-ish Shinobi-alike. Edit: I see I said in 2002 that it was "unplayable," though. I'll have to see if I still feel that way. Same for Shadow Dancer.

* The Ninja
A slight remix of the classic Sega arcade and SG-1000 card, Ninja Princess / Sega Ninja. Very good.

* Golden Axe Warrior
Seems okay, although I don't really drool over Zelda-clones. Better than the original graphically, at least (though it loses something in improving from LoZ's minimalist graphics, just maybe).

* Ys
I'm sure I enjoy this one.

Gosh, there's more, but my brain no worky right now. I have a whole row of SMS games on top of a shelf to go through when the SMSPower gender adapter shows up, though!
