Loved that game, it was remade for pc and xbox a few years ago, has a psp port too. highly suggest you check it out.
Amazing thread :/
Anyway, I bought the PC version of this game when it was released, and it's still a thing of beauty :)
The object of the game is the get as rich/famous/honourable as possible. One way to judge your performance is your rating when you retire. The rest ist up to you. Plunder as many cities as possible, hand them over to the country of your choice, go after treasure or rescue family members...

For what it's worth, there's a CD32 version as well. Pretty damn good game.

I have a copy of this for Xbox but haven't cracked it open yet. Sounds like fun though...I'll tackle it next since it's 360 compatible.

There's an NES version too. The pirates series is awesome, and easily can consume days on my life on end. I think the genesis version is my favorite though.

The Atari ST version is still one of my favorite games EVER. I remember going to sleep at night and hearing the whish sound of the "ocean" as my dad played :) Good memories.

You decide when it's over (unless you die of old age :) )
After all you're a pirate, and you don't tell them their game's up, do you.

Not a bad little machine, the NES.

Yep, I've spent whole days on Pirates! Very VERY addictive. Probably my favorite Genesis game I own.

I thought the NES version was the best. It wasn't pretty but they kept things simple.
Actually one of the things I disliked about the later versions is that too much fluff was added in an attempt to "update" the series.
Of course, I still think the Genesis and Xbox versions are great games but the NES version was the one I had the most fun with.

Of the older versions, the NES is actually my favorite too. I admit it's probably in large part due to nostalgia as that's the version I played for countless hours as a kid (and to this day I've only played the original '87 PC/Apple versions maybe once or twice). Aside from the reasons you mentioned, I always loved the music in the NES version (and, of course, the white noise "wind" effect). The Genesis version is very good, but I never enjoyed it as much.
I did enjoy the '04 PC version quite a bit too though, and actually liked at least most of the extra stuff that was added to it. I can't comment on the Xbox version of Pirates! '04 yet, but I imagine it's very similar (I actually did just buy a used copy of it off Amazon, but it hasn't come in yet).

My intro to the Pirates world was on the C64. The gameplay, the storyline, the open-ended do-what-you-want feel all added up to a great experience. And the music on the C64 SID was outstanding. I later had it for both the Genesis and NES, but those felt like pale copies (having been spoiled by my first version).
Now I have the new version for the PSP and it's one I bring out and play duirng long waits. Nothing like portable Pirates, yo.

Yep...this ate up many, many, many hours of my time on the C64... then on the PC when I bought Gold...and now the new version which is just as excellent. Haven't tired of it after 25 years!

Sid Meier's Pirates for Xbox is a great game. The concept is similar to the past titles, though I think (as I haven't played the originals for a while) you've got the added quest to find the family members the most nefarious pirate spirited from your character when he was a boy. The basic game structure is there with the added bits of a more active "wooing" system for a wife (QTE based ballroom dancing) and an on-foot stealth game if you have to sneak into a town (which can be tough as hell). It's all wrapped up in some pretty gorgeous graphics and is about as open ended as the originals.

As I mentioned above, my favorite version was the NES Pirates.
By the way, you also can rescue family members in the NES version. But given that there wasn't a real backstory in the NES version, it was never really a requirement. So it is a little less important to the storyline.
Besides it is a lot harder to rescue ALL of your family members in the NES version than it is in the Sid Meier's on Xbox. I've only been able to do it once on the NES and barely rescued the last family member about two or three months before the game forced me into retirement. The biggest thing preventing you from doing so is that the pieces of map you are given after finding a certain pirate are a lot less distinguishable given the NES graphics and it also takes FOREVER to get from town to town in the NES version.
Go back to my last point, though, because that is one thing I absolutely LOVE about the Xbox version.
They really shrunk the map down compared to the earlier versions. It doesn't take nearly as long to go from one end of the map to the other as it did in the old games.
On the NES version, it used to take several months in "game time" and several minutes in "real time" to get from Eleuthrea (near the very top of the screen) down to the towns at the bottom. Even when you were using Sloops and had the wind at your back.
Also in the NES version, if you pissed off one particular town or entire nationality (Spain) by attacking their ships or cities too many times, there was absolutely no way they'd ever forgive you.
For whatever reason, this is less of a problem in the Xbox version and you can eventually earn forgiveness for attacking a particular nations ships or towns.
Of the older versions, the NES is actually my favorite too. I admit it's probably in large part due to nostalgia as that's the version I played for countless hours as a kid (and to this day I've only played the original '87 PC/Apple versions maybe once or twice). For me, the NES version was awesome in that it was largely text based and when you weren't sailing (which was deathly slow), things moved at a pretty brisk pace inside of the towns, during swordfights, etc.
Stuff from the later versions like long drawn out cut scenes (like when you win a swordfight in the Xbox version), ballroom dancing minigames, etc. just took away from the main focus of the game.
I'll tell you this. The NES version of Pirates (along with NES Dragon Warrior) is sure as heck just the game I will be buying the FC Mobile I or II for.

I played the hell out of this on the IBM XT. IIRC I'd get shafted because I'd get half the trivia questions wrong at the beginning and they really screw you over for that (was the copy protection?)
