Mainly because I don't have it hooked up to the internet. My 360 and original Xbox take those spots. However, if this turns out to be a WiiWare exclusive I might have to bite. But then again I'm pretty sure it will be released in a compilation at some point in time, if not getting it's own retail release.

Personally, I think the new game looks right hideous, but it's all about the gameplay, and on that score I don't know anything yet.

I'd say "let's hope for the best," but I'm not going to kid myself - I have no Wii and especially no Virtual Console, Japanese or otherwise.

I'll pay 19.99 if it gets a PSP UMD release. Just like the fact that I'll never experience Mega Man 9(except for the demo stage) unless it gets some sortof physical release.

Though unlike what Ed said, the graphics really don't look that bad. Though in trying to keep in style to what the original games were, the characters look pretty stupid when lying down shooting.

Even though the DS is smaller, the system will be closer to you. So the size will be increased as there is a different point of vision. You'll be focused on a single part so the size won't really matter.

If a handheld was about 5 feet away from you, then there's a difference because it's obvious that small screen at a greater distance away will be much smaller than a 42 inch tv at the same distance.

Game still looks nice, though I think we'll need to see it in motion. I had started to think the game looked very nice after seeing some movies of it, but these screens are leading me back towards my initial impression. (None of this is terribly important of course; it's the gameplay that counts.)

The story seems rather interesting; it's good to see they're paying some mind to the US NES translation with the 1973 date.

Back to the topic, this game looks very interesting indeed. I just picked up the original Contra to match my Super C I picked up a while back, and I find both pretty fun, I wonder how faithful this will be to the series?

2D Contra fans rejoice!

It's brutally hard and it's awesome.

The graphics are a great tribute to the 16 bit era Contra games, the level bosses are cleverly designed, and the gameplay is silky smooth (though I can't understand why Konami would think that people using the Wiimote would want the "fix" button to activate AUTOMATICALLY by default in the default controller settings. I LITERALLY thought something was wrong with my controller ... experienced Contra players will want to assign the "fix" to a button immediately in the options settings if using the Wiimote as a controller).

I'm not sure how long the game is, but even if it is short, this is a great reason to drop $10 on the Wii online store.

It's been a while since there have been two great Contra games in a row (Contra 4 on DS and this) ... Konami typically insists on trying some type of top-down garbage in-between entries ... hopefully they've learned their lessons once and for all. This is the only way to go with Contra!

Hey, what's wrong with the graphics in Contra HC? That's one of my favorites.

Contra games have always had very awkward looking character models and run cycles, this one is no different.

Rebirth is much slicker looking & colorful than recent entries, not sure where it draws that design element from but it's a welcome update.

That sucks. I also think the graphics look overly cartoony but the gameplay is what matters most. Your review sounds really good so I don't doubt this is another great Contra entry. Konami has redeemed themselves a little with this, still doesn't make up for their horrible Castlevania idea or their upcoming 'walking' game. Divert Kojima to the Wii and maybe I'll change my mind about them.

Having successfully finished Contra Rebirth (normal difficulty, five lives), I have to say that it is the weirdest Contra I know of. Sure, Hard Corps had a werewolf and a robot playable character, but this Rebirth is messed up.

When I played the game I skipped all of the cutscenes except the last because I was more concerned with playing through to the ending. But even then the glimpses of them definitely showed the strangeness: Commander Salamander, robot girl "Contra"s, cross-dressers, etc. But while I don't want to spoil the ending for those who haven't gotten to it with Bill, I will say it involves a naked dude handing a bandana to a robot girl before getting frozen.

From what I hear, the game has many unlockable characters which are obtained by finishing the game with different characters, so I'm sure there is more epilogue weirdness to be seen.

I think the Contra games have progressively been getting stranger through the years, or at least had instances of strangeness peppered throughout.

As long as the action is there and it's classic 2D Contra game-play it doesn't bother me how strange the story is.

Just got done playing Rebirth. I have to be honest, it sucks... It just didnt feel right. On level 1, debris is falling everywhere, its really hard to make out anything, its like too much is going on at once. I would rather have more enemies than random debris falling. Once i got to the caterpillar boss on level 1, I died, but then i would just respawn and fall to my death in the lower middle of the screen... So far, no good.

I finally got around to playing this the last three days and wanted to post a few thoughts. First, the cutscenes were LAAAAME. They made little sense, and the one about a crossdresser was friggin stupid. Second, I'm pissed there's only five stages. Third, no matter what difficulty you play it on (well, I only played Normal, Hard, and Nightmare), you get the SAME ending and you get NOTHING for beating it on Nightmare (super lame). I only played it with Bill, but still. Do you get different endings with different characters?

A fair Contra game, but way too easy. Even Nightmare difficulty wasn't that hard, taking me only 3 hours or so to get through. Sure, I used 7 lives, but still.

Ok, with all my complaints out of the way, it was a good Contra game, but by no means a favorite of the series. Worth the 1000 points, and all Contra fans must play it, but I was disappointed with some things. Luckily, I only had to play it less than 7 or 8 hours to get through those three difficulties, and I know I'm not missing out on more (unless each character does have different endings, which honestly I'd just Youtube at this point). Ok, I didn't unlock the character for easy mode yet, but eh. I'm not sure I want to. I probably will, just to do it anyway though.

EDIT: Ok, I just beat it twice on easy mode. Once was with the girl robot. I got the exact same ending both times, So, just because you get an extra last boss on any mode but easy, you are not getting anythiong different. The only things you can unlock in this game is Nightmare difficulty and three more characters that control exactly the same, as far as I can tell.
