Parz writes "The recent announcement that the upcoming Ghostbusters game will be a timed PlayStation exclusive in the PAL territories — revealed a mere month before release — has set a nasty precedent which could have long-term repercussions for the industry. This Gameplayer article explores how this generation of gaming has spiraled into a tit-for-tat war on third-party exclusivity deals instigated by Sony and Microsoft, and the effect it is having on the psychology of the consumers. The Ghostbusters developers aren't pleased by Sony's deal, and the Guardian questions whether the game will be big enough to really affect console sales."http://games.slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rss&op=image&style=h0&sid=09/05/09/031221 (http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/05/09/031221&from=rss)

Is it really that big a deal? Have we gotten to the point where waiting an extra month or two is a deal breaker? How long does a "new" game stay "new"? Does the hype pass to the next great thing that fast?

I can see an exclusive being a big deal but these timed exclusives? Kind of a non event for me.

I dunno.. but shit dies out fast these days. I planned on seeing "Watchmen" recently only to find it was totally gone from the theaters. That thing just came out(!) as far as I'm concerned..

Maybe it's just me but I remember stuff like Star Wars playing for a year at the local theater.

It hasn't been an issue when 360 gained all these timed exclusives but now that Sony has been starting to get some frequent exclusives and timed exclusives in comparison to Microsoft, everyone starts bitching.

This is so true. I was in the same boat with that movie!

This move is not going to win people over to the PS3. If anything, it is negative PR for Sony, just what they DONT need. While I think that any company going out of their way to get an exclusive is probably a good thing, there is a way to do it, and a way to NOT do it. Sony has dont that latter.

Gosh I wish they would wake up...it pains me to see one of my favorite game companies make mistake after mistake

Timed exclusives don't bother me at all. Even if the later release doesn't include additional material to make up for the delay, it's not like there's not other games that I have to play while I wait.

Also, that Slashdot parser blows. Wish it could actually generate properly formatted BBCode.

I think it's only a big deal when the version released second has significant improvements or content not available in the first release. I have both the PS3 and 360 and in simultaneous multi-platform releases, I typically go with 360 because of minor improvements in graphics and frame rate. I get annoyed when I buy a timed exclusive for the 360, only to have to rebuy the same game on the PS3 in an enhanced or improved version. Alone in the Dark and Red Alert are just two I have had to do this with recently, but I know there are others.
