View Full Version : Is there any other game that uses the basic Mega Man premise?

In Mega Man you go through a level, fight a boss then you gain it's power. I just can't seem to think of one at the moment but surely there has to be another game like it.

Well...in Zelda, you go through a dungeon, get an item, fight the boss with that item, and repeat :P
I honestly don't know though. Technically Kirby Super Star would apply, because you can inhale "minibosses"

In DQH: Rocket Slime you fight other tanks and can gain recipes to make new weapons from beating them, so sort of inline with what you're talking about. I really can't think of any other games offhand that allow you to do that, though.

The Krion Conquest is the most obvious Megaman clone ever! The game is pretty much a less refined Megaman without the awesome music.

Check out the game Journey to Silius on the NES.. it is a very good game. It is a game that in my opinion, is the love child between Contra and Mega Man.. No kidding it is a great hybrid of both. If you are a Contra and a Mega Man fan you owe it to yourself to check out this neat hidden little gem. Since it was not a great seller you can also get it for dirt cheap too. I recommend this game to all the people that like Contra in my store and all of them seem to dig it a lot.

Bucky O'Hare is quite similar. You can select different stages, and completing each stage unlocks one of your other characters. They all control similarly, but they have different weapons. Since you switch them with one button on-the-fly, it's like the MM weapon system.

Shinobi on the Game Gear was like this. At the end of each level you unlocked a new "Shinobi" with a different power, such as Lighting, Fire, etc.
Come to think of it, this game was exclusive to the Game Gear. Been years since I fired it up.
Whomp 'Em on the NES is exactly like Mega Man: Beat a boss, earn a "totem" (special ability). You even get to choose the order in which you play through the stages.

Well. These use the Mega Man premise other than the fact that there are no levels.
Castlevania Aria of Sorrow and Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow. Not only do you get the ability of every boss you defeat(unless it's a boss that is later a random enemy) you also have the chance of stealing the ability of every regular enemy in the game.

Krion Conquest is an incredibly obvious Mega Man clone, except that for some reason you start with all the powers. So, oddly, the most Mega Man-like game on NES fails to meet the criteria set forth here.

When you simplify things, almost all games are like that.
Go through level/stage/something, fighting/defeat/solve something, gain something useful, go to next level.

Yeah but the question is if it's like Mega Man where you gain the powers of the enemy, not just some random ability that has nothing to do with the enemy you just fought.

Soul Reaver had you gain the power of your enemy (boss) after you beat them, although the gameplay is nothing like megaman.

Ducktales had a non-linear level system. you can pick to start in the amazon or wherever.

While not exactly the same, I remember Shatterhand had a similar stage select menu as the Mega Man games did...

Kenseiden for the SMS is basically Mega Man with a samurai instead of a robot
