I love Van Halen..and I will probably still try out this game but couldn't this just have been sold as DLC? We need yet ANOTHER one-band release? Yes, I know there are also more bands on it but...damn...Activision seems so damn money hungry with these releases!

Should be fun for people who still like the genre though.

yeah this 1 band release stuff is getting old fast.
How many guitar games do we need in 2 years time to get people to stop buying them?
Track packs and DLC is the way to go.

I would usually agree, but playing as Van Halen is jusy WAY to appealing. They finally got me on this one, now if only there was a Guns N Roses one, that would be the only two I would ever need. :D

No Sammy, no buy. Activision is clueless DLC would have been the way to go from here. I haven't bought a GH game since Aerosmith, I'm done. Rock Band gets all of my money from here on out.
Guitar Hero Wham! is next.

Although i agree that a GnR one WOULD be awesome (again...could also just be DLC), they would probably just fuck it up and add stuff from the "fake" GnR of Chinese Democracy. Hey...maybe they'll think its "teh rockzzorz" and have a "battle of the guitar gods" between buckethead and slash LOL *sigh* now I miss the real GnR even more :(
As for the single releases, I gotta say it again...why not just make it DLC?!? Hell, they could let you download the actual avatars to play as them IF you wanted to. GH:Aerosmith, Metallica, Van Halen, Guitar Hero 5, DJ Hero, etc. etc.etc....just too damn much already

I'm sure the problem with selling it as DLC is that fewer people would be buying. Most of the 'music gamers' that I know don't even have their consoles online.
A Rock Band style track pack would make more sense, but Activision prefers $60 price gouges over $30 track packs.

That would be a good idea, but when the servers die, so does the DLC.
Having the songs in a physical media is much better, IMO.

I can only say "meh." The musicians are all very talented technically in Van Halen, but their music never grooved me at all. I know some people would die for this band, but I always found their music somewhere close to pop rock with a technical flare.

can't wait for it to hit
I might pick up GH again because of this. I'm curious to see how much hammering and pulling that they throw into this one.....and curious to see whether the level of difficulty will be correct. Playing Eddie's stuff in real life isn't necessarily hard.....you have to get the proper feel and phrasing down, which is something that doesn't always transfer well to these games. I'm also interested to see how the graphics portray the guys in the band. Should be fun as hell.

I came to this conclusion as well, especially after seeing that this year alone Activision is releasing Guitar Hero Metallica, Guitar Hero Smash Hits, Guitar Hero Van Halen, Guitar Hero 5, and Band Hero. There's also DJ Hero, but since that's not actually a guitar game I won't count it against them. Still, this is getting a bit ridiculous, even if I do like both VH and Metallica.

Nobody's posted the Bobby Kotick quote yet?
To explain why Activision is releasing 4 GH games plus Band Hero in 1 year, here is Activision CEO Bobby Kotick explaining why Activision dropped the Ghostbusters game (and 50 Cent and Brutal Legend):
"[Those games] don't have the potential to be exploited every year on every platform with clear sequel potential and have the potential to become $100 million dollar franchises. ..."
So, who's buying COD:MW2 when it hits the DS?

As much as I love Diamond Dave, the complete absence of Sammy (and I would assume) the charting hits that he sang with VH makes this a "wait for the GameStop summer sale next year to pick it up for $10 and maybe another pennied out wired guitar".
between 5150 and F.U.C.K. there are plenty of Hagar era songs worth being in there.

ugh i like when companies make the same game every 2 months, oh wait it's just Activision, i liked it when only 1 game every year it was something new every time basically. and also has anyone seen those achievements? those are achievements that nobody will get 100% on. They're all like get 5 stars on every song as drummer, singer bassist and guitarist, on expert!

What a douchebag. joshnickerson is right. EA is bad but this is definitely worse.
I remember when Activision announced all those games that were getting cut. Scarface 2 was announced and shot down in the exact same press release.
I loved Scarface the World is Yours, huge fan of the character because I love the movie, but also because it was an amazing game and I always wished they made another one but expanded on it much more; like Miami actually being the size of Miami rather than as small as it was. The fact that the gameplay was amazing, how you pushed drugs, boated it from islands back to Miami, the shooting system, the car/boat where you call a driver system, all the islands and how many areas are actually able to be entered as well as how large they are(yet this is due also to how small Miami was,) and the biggest thing, is how every part in the game pulled from the movie was a perfect representation. Stuff you didn't see they obviously added their own which made it look atleast realistic. Tony's mansion for example, because while you saw alot of it, there were some parts you didn't see and they made it look really nice.
*edit*
Ghostbusters was also in the press release to be cacnelled as well, but the developers released another one saying how far they're done with the game and said they're going to make sure that it's released. Which it was. Companies are out to make money, but fucked up how Activision is now all about the money and tries to bring nothing new and cancels games that could be genuinely great games out of the fact that they're not going to make $100 million sales. I mean how hard is it to add some songs to a disc, etc? Not very. Sure they have licensing, etc, but adding the songs, putting the notes on there, not very difficult at all. Not like Final Fantasy 13 where Square is putting millions of dollars worth of work into it as they do every other FF, or Mirror's Edge with some unique gameplay elements, or FromSoftware's reinvisioning of the AC series starting with AC4, the additions made to that, or Oblivion and Fallout's huge open worlds. Just like EA they're releasing the same games over and over again, but the fact that these have even less graphical interface and by far less work on it to actually pull in much more money.

Rock Band's suck up the songs into one big library system is so much better, I can't be bothered to buy all these band discs for Guitar Hero. I don't need to switch discs 5 times to play a few songs. And it's not like they improve the software (for either RB or GH) with each expansion pack, it's always the same second rate joining system that is overcomplicated and slow.
I'm sticking to Rock Band for these reasons, when it comes to adding on songs. Van Hagar or not.
Van lives in my house.

Just think about when XBL and PSN die how much rare DLC would be worth. For example. What if "specific DLC" only got a certain amount of sales and it was hard as hell to find.
I wonder if a DP member would show off his XBL or PSN DLC. I have 7,432 pieces of XBL downloadable content. This one is Contra. It was taken off XBL in 2008(I'm guessing, I have no idea.) This one is Flapjack Marauders, sold only 37 times, the rarest DLC evar(and also an obvious made up name.)
Then you have people selling their harddrive for insane amounts because people want to collect it.
Or for PS3 users. They could sell it all up to five times.
