i recently went to my local game shop and there were a TON of sega cd games for sale, but i noticed something off about them.

they were all in DVD sized cases.

Was there some release with different cases or did i stumble upon some really nice looking bootlegs?

I thought segacd cases were large monsters of things... or am I recalling incorrectly?

The Sega CD, Saturn and early PS1 games used the same cases but they haven't been made in well over 10 years. They're also rather fragile. My advice, if you see cheap sports games with intact cases, buy them for the case.

so that does anwer my question then.... kinda.
ALL of the cases were dvd cases with PRIMO looking glossy paper sleeves. (about 30 games)
there was not a single original case there... so I'm assuming they're all bootlegs.

They could just be new cases made for old games, those plastic Sega CD cases do break easily (particularly the hinges)...

I think a lot of people have given up trying to replace the Sega CD / Saturn cases, and are just going to DVD cases. But since they aren't the same size...they print out new covers so they look ok on the shelf.

I would ask, before buying games of course, to see if they have the original cover / manual / back insert that you get with the game. If they did, then I'd have no real problem buying the games. Just store the original paper stuff in a folder or something, and keep the disk in the DVD case out on your shelf. Or if you are painfully anal about it, find a cache of old sports games and replace the cases like suggested above.

You're preaching to the girl who shuns boxes to the mother-in-laws house for safe keeping.

I will definitely check them out tho, i don't have a sega cd let alone a sega anymore, but that's what emulators are for =D

The cases are 'bootlegs' but that doesn't mean the games are. Sounds like a store has gone and made smaller cases for them to display more, or because the games when bought were loose, too damaged to display ect.

I've seen in Play N' Trade stores Sega CDs in DVD cases, just to keep those empty display boxes on the shelf rather than the original cases.

Hey Obesolete, if you see Snatcher, Vay, or Popful Mail, grab that puppy for me!

A lot of games you will find in the wild won't be in their original case. Some will be in jewel cases, some will be in DVD cases, and some will be in those little plastic slips.

Plus, some early Sega CDs came in cardboard boxes with a jewel case inside. Games like Willy Beamish and Time Gal, along with not-even-remotely-gamelike titles like the Make My Video series (stay far away from those stinkbombs!).

I found a hookup actually on brand new Sega CD/Saturn Cases. The guy must have like 10,000 copies of some VR Soccer game sealed, he just opens them up, takes the stuff out, and mails them to me. I think I bought 12 off of him.

In my opinion modern DVD style cases are much better. I hate those clunky old sega cd/saturn cases. I actually buy JAP copies of Saturn games because I like having original cases, but I despise the American Sat cases. If you're interested, I'd say buy some!

I'll take a copy of snatcher too if its cheapish. Hell give us a list of games and prices if you don't mind :) cool find. My local place has a few games-all in original cases they have a sonic cd mint for 15 I might buy the cases are a pain I replaced many games cases by getting sports games cases

okay so here's the scoop, they're a little picked over now, and i forgot to bring my camera, but there is a seperate cabinet for "rares" and they had a copy of snatcher in there for $99.99.

and a copy of HOTA/OOTW but i didn't checkthe price.

The rest of the titles seemed to be fairly common, there was some golf ones, Ecco,... but they're pretty picked over, there might be 15 or so left. I'll remember the camera next time for sure.

I'm shocked they had Snatcher. I was joking when I asked (but secretly hoped that they might actually have those at a dirt cheap price). And considering that the Canadian dollar is a little bit higher than the American dollar, that's a good price. I keep hoping to find one in a thrift or flea market around me. Just because I like the thrill of the hunt, and it's so much more fun to brag about it when I maybe pay something crazy like $3 for a copy rather than the $125 the DP price guide lists it as. I like the bragging rights!

I wonder how long it's been sitting there, too? Just because the store tags it as such doesn't mean it's worth that, or they'll even get that price.

I'm also hesitant to trust a rarity and price guide run by a used game store.

For those of you who would like to replace all your fragile Sega CD/Saturn cases with DVD cases, a major effort is underway to make it easier. I am sure that there are threads about it around here somewhere, but here is the link to their site:

http://www.thecoverproject.net/index.php

They have covers made up for games from all different systems are are looking for community help in creating the ones that they don't have yet.

only about a week i'd say. Like i said before i check this place every other day or so.

with the dollar as it stands right now the price would be about $90... which still sucks.
what happened to the rates recently, I hope for a weaker canadian dollar so my payal pulls into my bank account are nice and fat.
I guess its just time to buy supplies from the US rigt now.

anyway, if anyone is still seriously interested about snatcher I can still pick it up, it's not a big deal, the option is open.

My local store has Snatcher also, for $99. It's been sitting there awhile too.
