View Full Version : Need Advice on Compilations for X-box, PS2, GC

I am a oldschool gamer who is just now getting around to playing Gamecube, original X-box, and PS2 games. I have a particular interest in some of the compilations that were released on these three systems:
Midway Arcade Treasures 1 (released on GC, PS2, Xbox)
Midway Arcade Treasures 2 (GC, PS2, Xbox)
Midway Arcade Treasures 3 (GC, PS2, Xbox)
Capcom Classics Collection Volume 1 (PS2, Xbox)
Capcom Classics Collection Volume 2 (PS2, Xbox)
Taito Legends 1 (PS2, Xbox)
Taito Legends 2 (PS2, Xbox)
Namco Museum (GC, PS2, Xbox)
Namco Museum: 50th Aniversary (GC, PS2, Xbox)
SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1 (PS2, Xbox)
I figure a lot of you have already played these. I was wondering, which of the system versions should I buy? For example, is there any advantage to owning a PS2 Capcom Classics instead of an X-box one? Is the picture clarity better on any one of those three systems? I'll be playing them on a 40inch LCD TV?
I'd appreciate any advice you can give me. :hail:

I'd stay away from the Gamecube versions, if at all possible, as they tend to be pricier than the others and don't offer any enhancements/extras over the others. I have the Taito Legends (1 & 2) for the PS2, Midway Arcade Treasures (all 3) for the Xbox, and Capcom Classics Collection (Vol. 1 only) for the Xbox and don't really have a preference for which of the two systems I buy.

Midway Arcade Treasures 1 and 2: get them for the PS2. The dualshock is perfect for double-joystick games like Robotron 2084 and Smash TV.

Don't miss out on Activision Anthology, for the PS2. That's one of my favorites, there's a lot of great games and neat bonus material like old commercials.
My favorite compilation for the PS2 was Sega Genesis Collection. It's been supplanted by Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for newer consoles, but it's still a lot of fun and it's overstuffed with great games, including a couple that didn't make it on to the newer one.
Must haves: (PS2)
MAT1 & 2
Taito Legends 1 & 2
Capcom Classics Coll. 1 & 2
SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1
Activision Anthology
NAMCO 50th Anniv.
That'll keep you going awhile. Personally I've all but sworn off other games (except DDR) & playing only arcade comps.

There's also Intellivision Lives! for all 3 systems, which is a rather good compilation.
By the way, the Xbox and PS2 version of Taito Legends 2 each have exclusive games, so you should get them both.
Don't forget about Zelda: OoT + Master Quest and Zelda: Collector's Edition for Gamecube.

The only console to have every compilation is the PS2. I have the PS2 versions of all titles mentioned. Also, don't forget the umpteen PS2 SNK collections, Atari, Activision, and Intellivision compilations that aren't mentioned in the original post.
There are only two exceptions: Sonic Gems collection (Gamecube only in the US) and Tecmo Classic Arcade (Xbox only).

Don't forget the PS1 Namco Museum games. There are five volumes (and a 6th one in Japan) and each volume has some pretty neat extra information on each game. If you enjoy the actual history of Namco gaming then don't miss these!

The 2nd, 4th and 5th will cost you quite a bit...if you can even find them.

Agreed that the PS1 Namco Museum games > Namco Museum 50th Anniversary
At this point, Namco is just being lazy (where are all the potential extras on the 50th anniversary compilation?)...
To note: the Namco Museum PS1 extras include a lot of Japanese-only promo material, especially in regards to Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man. You gotta remember that the problem is that Namco did not originally distribute its games in North America, but rather had them published by Midway or Atari.

AVOID SNK ARCADE CLASSICS ON THE PS2!!!!
Or if you want to waste fifteen bucks on missing flickering sprites, uneven emulation speed that looks like a warped record, and games that run at half their proper speed? Then go for it. The only good thing about it is the golf game, that thing plays at full speed and it's a pretty decent game.
I've heard good stuff about the Wii version, but the PS2 version is a piece of trash that's not even worth the plastic it's printed on.
Most of SNK's other compilations (AOF, FF, World Heroes) are pretty much perfect. Metal Slug Anthology (I own this) has some uneven emulation and button lag at times. I've also been told that the US version of KOF Orochi Saga has some weird sound and gameplay bugs. I haven't found a copy of SamSho Anthology yet.

I like it too. Maybe the enjoyment of that compilation depends on the Neo Geo hardcoreness of the gamer.

I've been playing the system since 1992, in local arcades. I know the speed the games are supposed to run in, and how they're supposed to play. I know they're not supposed to have missing audio, or lagged sound effects. The PS2 version I own -is not right-.
So unless it got a reprint that fixed these bugs, I don't see HOW people can claim it works "fine", unless it's some sort of compatibility issue with my slim PS2.

It's not. People who don't have an extensive NeoGeo background can enjoy the "flawed" Wii/PS2 compilation for what it is. Purists who know the games well must see things wrong that the rest of us don't.
Most of my NeoGeo experiences consist solely of PS2 ports (the only exception being the various KoF's on Dreamcast or Metal Slug X on PS).

get the sonic classic collection for gamecube for sure. It has all the old genesis sonic games on it.

I didn't say anything about the Wii version because I've heard it's a lot better than the PS2 version, in terms of game speed. I've also read that the PSP version is pretty decent (and this one's actually getting released in Japan).
And it sucks even more because the IDEAS behind the compilation were pretty damn good (achievements, unlockables, all those bonus features). Its the games not working right most of the time that turned me off to the collection. :(

Since everyone else helped you with the game advice, I'll help you with where to find them. Game Crazy has a big sale (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=131899) this weekend where(among other things) all used Xbox and Gamecube games are buy one get one free. This should help you fill in some of the holes rather cheaply.

Back then, I paid close attention to reviews of these to decide which platform to buy as each compilation was released (Usually going with the Xbox versions if they seemed equal since it was my favorite controller and usually had a few bonuses like online leaderboards that the others didn't). The only compilations I remember being unequal with significant differences between consoles were the Midway Arcade Treasures releases.
MAT1 has lots of problems on the PS2 with game speeds and such. The Xbox version also had a few issues. The GameCube version had the least problems in terms of game performance, but its been stated there's a lag in the sound effects occurring in the GC version. I went with the GCN version and never noticed sound issues. I later bought the Xbox version and was pleased with that despite a few issues here and there that I never experienced in the GCN version. Never played the PS2 port.
MAT2 had the Xbox version as the superior version according to reviews, so I went with that one and was pleased with it. On the look for the GCN version now to use a arcade stick with it, but haven't found a cheap copy yet.
MAT3, went with the Xbox since it had the best performance in the games and the Xbox controller suited my hands the best, especially in racing games. However, over time it became clear that it (And apparantly the PS2 version which I've never played) have a saving bug where your save periodically becomes corrupted. The delayed GCN version doesn't have that saving bug, though performance on games suffers (Slow down in one of the later Super Off-Road tracks for example, where the Xbox had no issues keeping up with it). I have both and don't really know which to recommend. I'd lean toward the GCN version despite issues, though I'm glad I have both.
I'm encountered nothing similar in other compilations besides perhaps Sonic Mega Collection. The GCN version has a smaller lineup and no save states, but sound emulation is nearly perfect. In the Plus versions on the PS2 and Xbox, it has save states and a increased game lineup, but minor sound issues that never bothered me. In reality though, Sonic Mega Collection Plus was more of a semi sequel in my opinion, but its worth noting how they varied.
Otherwise, they were always pretty equal, besides perhaps getting things like progressive scan & online leaderboards on the Xbox while the PS2/GCN didn't (And Atari Anthology getting some hd modes on the Xbox that the PS2 version didn't get). With these, I'd recommend just going with the system whose controller you prefer (Which in my case was the Xbox with its Controller S and a hd where saving space wasn't at a premium).
Also, Taito Legends 2 on the PS2 and Xbox were different, with varying game lineups and varying qualities of emulation. Some Taito supplied PS2 titles in it were ports which were somewhat weak, since the PS2 wasn't up to the task of doing emulation, which Empire (I think) was able to get going under emulation for the Xbox with increased accuracy to the originals. Also, some of those PS2 supplied jobs from Taito just couldn't be made to work on the Xbox in the time Empire had to work with the few resources Taito had supplied them.
However, Empire were able to get going a few games on the Xbox that Taito hadn't supplied them with since they hadn't gotten them working on the PS2, due to the more powerful Xbox hardware. As a result, each version had 4-5 unique titles and made both worthwhile to acquire. However, the Xbox version never saw a stateside release so you have to import (Luckily, the UK release was region free and works in unmodded Xbox's).
I enjoyed the Neo Geo collection on the PS2, but I never owned a home Neo Geo and I usually avoided Neo Geo arcade titles in the arcade in favor of games that were more to my liking, so I was largely unfamiliar with them.
Also don't forget the already mentioned Activison Anthology on the PS2 which was one of the best last generation compilations, or Atari Anthology which has yet to be mentioned besides by me.
Also, just get the 50th Anniversary Namco Museum release. The original relied on ports that weren't terribly accurate, and only has to offer Pac-Attack and some arrangement games, with everything else being included (And accurately emulated this time) on the 50th anniversary release with several additional titles added to the lineup. Only get the original if you're curious about the arrangement titles and Pac-Attack (If there's anyone out there that likes Pac Attack).

Don't forget the Street Fighter Anthology Collection, and the Megaman Anniversary Collection. I believe there is also a Megaman X collection too but I don't own it.
Also of note, the Taito Legends Vol. 2 isn't available in North America on the Xbox (but it is on the PS2). It's a PAL release, but from what I understand it works on un-modded NTSC Xboxes. Oops... Leo edited his post to include this information above while I was posting mine.

Good suggestions
With Mega Man Anniversary Collection, the Xbox version fixed a few issues and included all the PS2/GCN specific bonuses, making it the clear winner if you can put up with the Xbox's d-pad.
With Mega Man X Collection, I don't remember significant differences. I went with the GCN version to use the Hori digital pad with it (Though I've forgotten if it worked or not with that controller, there was one GCN compilation that only worked with gamepads that included analog control, despite allowing you to use the d-pad too, but I'm thinking I encountered that on Sonic Gems Collection).
No experience with the Street Fighter collection, but I remember hearing good things about it. I'm not a fan of fighters, so those were the only compilations I didn't purchase last generation.

Street Fighter Alpha collection is pretty good. The version of SFA3 doesn't seem to have the world tour mode included in the standalone releases, though. I've only read about that gameplay mode, and it's not in my copy, so I dunno what was up with that.

Avoid the Gamecube version of Megaman anniversary collection. They switched the B and A buttons for every game. The Xbox version also suffers from the xbox controller being no good for platformers. Get it for PS2.
Sonic Mega Collection... I'd go for Gamecube. The Xbox version has some extra games but they're a chore to unlock(why you need to "unlock" any games in these things, I'll never know.) It also has an odd border around the games which the Gamecube doesn't have. If you have a Hori Gameboy player controller, even better.

This same version is also available on the PS2, and it includes six Game Gear games, plus The Ooze and Comix Zone.

Here are the games I'd choose
-Sega Genesis Collection First priority of everything on this list if you don't have a PS360. If you do have a PS360, get the one below.
-Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection(PS360) - This one is Sega Genesis Collection and more. If you have a PS3 or 360, this should be your first priority over any game on this list.
-Taito Legends
-Taito Legends 2(XBOX if possible, if not PS2. If you collect for PC it's the same as the XBOX version. -- XBOX version is superior as it has Bubble Symphony, though the PS2 version has one extra shmup.)
-Mega Man Anniversary Collection Every Mega Man game plus two crappy arcade Mega Man games that you'll probably play through once or twice and never again(Don't get this for Gamecube as the buttons are switched.)
-Mega Man X Collection Mega Man X1-6 and some pathetic Mega Man racing game. Unfortunately, they use the PSX version of MMX3 instead of SNES which has worse music in my opinion.
-Metal Slug Anthology A great series that has yet to have a single bad game, though they have gotten progressively worse. Haven't played MS7 yet, but do own it.
-Capcom Classics Collection Aside from 97 versions of Street Fighter 2, they actually have some good games on here.
-Capcom Classics Collection 2 Strider makes this collection = win. It's also got other games, but you'll probably spend most of your time with the man himself, Strider Hiryu.
-Midway Treasures 1, 2, and 3 Only get 3 if you like alot of racing games because I think that's all there is, 1 and 2 are worth getting.
Strider is full of win.

It wasn't? Well, there's the PC version which can be obtained for $5 if you catch it in Gamestop. Taito Legends 2 has some amazing games, including Bubble Symphony, Ray______ (the ones for PS2 and Xbox/PC differ), and Dungeon Magic.

I can personally acknowledge that Samurai Showdown Anthology for the PS2 is awsome. I played this one until the late hours several nights, and it really good. What makes this compliation great is the addition of Samurai Showdown VI....beautiful background art with every playable character from the entire series...heck you can even play as the animals! You probably have to order online, but this one is totally worth it!
I agree with the PS2 Sega Genesis Collection....good times

Since people are listing what compilations they have, I figured I'd mention that I actually started a thread for doing such - you can find it here (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74751).
