I was talking to a girl about video games, you know the kind of person who obviously played games but doesn't remember much ("Contra? Wasn't that the one with the red guy and the blue guy?") and she told me about one of her favorite NES (supposedly) games:
"You were like, this guy who lands on an island, and in the beginning he lands in the water and you have to like, paddle out of it with the buttons. Then there are these worm thingies you have to jump over, and there's this big black bull. I was scared of that bull when I was a little kid, and he always killed me."
The part about landing on an island made me think of Amagon, or Ikari Warriors, and she says it's none of those. The worm things and bull make me think of Battle of Olympus, and she says that's not it either. She's sure the title had "Island" in it, like "something island". She says it's not Adventure Island. I just looked for NES games with island in the title and I can't come up with anything like this.
Unless she's thinking of two different games (Ikari warriors and Battle of Olympus?) I'm stumped on this one.
Anyone?

Sounds like 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' to me. The game starts out with a rafting portion and then turns to jumping about to toss rocks, slingshot the baddies.

Agreed. this definitely sounds like Out Of This World (aka Another World) which was ported to a ton of systems including SNES and Genesis (but not the original NES as far as I know).
This video shows the first 10 minutes of gameplay. You can see the water paddling at 2:30, worm kicking at 2:40, and the bull/bear thing at 3:03.

Another vote for OotW/Another World... and no 8-bit version exists

Yeah. Another for Out of this World. The worms and the bull were the first few screens and you had to run left to grab on the vine to not get killed by the bull.
A fast forwarded version of Out of this World.

Definately 'out of this world'. I can never get past that stupid bull... Not that I have tried too much.
The worm things are evil too.

I think the majority take it.
I say OOTW too.
The leeches... the beast thing, that could easily be mistaken for a bull because of it's shape.
The island and paddling? that could be the very first screen where you have to swim to the top of the pool like mad to void the tenticles at the bottom coming up at you.
it makes sense. doesn't it?

Not to mention the game's so distinctive and atmospheric I could see a child being afraid of the bear. Hell, the stupid bear gave me goosebumps when I was a child because I'd get so worked up over the fact I knew I was going to die. And id didn't help that the game doesn't look like any other game I'd played at the time, it was eerie.

It was Out of This World, Thanks guys!
She tells me her seven year old son is a complete Mario whore, and he even plays the NES and SNES Mario games on VC! She wants to get him some Mario stuff, but has encountered the problem that a lot of it is classic collector stuff that fetch steep prices on eBay. I'm thinking of giving her some of my Mario junk I don't have any particular attachment to.
