Commodore 64 video issue

I just bought a C64 with a 1541 disk drive and a few games. My problem is the display, When i turn on the machine the screen fades front left to right as a white screen, Once it's on the start up screen, it is purple and not blue, Once I load a game the screen looks normal for half a second then fades to a white background, I can still see the game but it looks terrible. Ive tried the rf switch and the a/v cables the machine came with. Can anybody help?

Probably the VIC-II chip or associated circuitry has failed. Sorry- it's easier just to find another. There's 20 million of them kicking around. :)

Check the VIC-II, the PLA, and the 2114 Color RAM.
