View Full Version : Your worst condition game... what's it look like?

Describe it and/or show a picture.

My copy of Mega Man Xtreme 2 for GBC has half of the label torn. I believe it came off when I took off that stupid Gamestop used sticker. Looking forward to replacing this cart.

Also, my copy of Super Mario Kart has some weird holes in the label. I can't fathom what made these, except a child or a pet.

i have a copy of conquest of the crystal palace that is missing a chunk out of it's case and is cracked in another spot.

Best $1 i ever spent on a game i was looking for anyway XD

...I forgot about my copy of Toki as well... There are gouges in the label that could only be made by teeth. I understand and accept them.

mmm...I think the worst I have is a Yoshi's Island cart with the top side of the label somewhat damaged.

Well, I also have a Secret of Evermore cart that is pretty battered up, but since it's the duplicate I use for playing (I have another CIB) I don't really care.

I had a few copies of Atari 2600 games with the labels completely missing, and one in particular with a cracked case and no label that still worked. I traded that in to PnT and got another copy (believe it was Star Wars).

I also have a copy of Samurai Warriors 2 for Xbox 360 that arrived to me with mold growing on the case. I decided to reprint the label with glossy paper and no one can tell.

I had a copy of Marvel vs Capcom 2 for Dreamcast. It was scratched to hell so I got it resurfaced. It cost me nothing because they told me there was missing parts that you could see through the disc. I popped it in the Dreamcast and it worked perfect.

I have a stack of about 10 disc only Saturn games that came with a free Saturn. They're horribly scratched, scraped, and scuffed. They were all former rentals to boot; all having an old Hollywood Video clear label on the top of the disc.

Only one of the games actually boots up and plays (Command & Conquer). Go figure.

My worst condition game was a copy of Donkey Kong Country that looked perfect but just wouldn't play. I tried cleaning the contacts, opening up the cartridge to look for any obvious signs of damage, etc, but I couldn't bring it back to life.

I also have a few duplicates that are in poor condition, mainly N64 games with torn labels, a copy of Ridge Racer V that's missing the cover insert and Virtua Fighter 3tb which I found inside my Dreamcast when I bought it (it was secondhand and the store obviously had forgot to remove the disc after checking the machine worked). I ended up printing off a sleeve for it.

I bought a stack of NES games pff ebay and one copy of Megaman II is melted in the top left corner. You can actually see a little bit of the circuit board underneath. There's also some melted on crayon markings that have mostly dried out and fall off when picked at.

Because of the way the plastic has warped, I can't fit it into a NES toaster but any toploader will still play the game.

I have a copy of Sega CD Dark Wizard that has a long crack radiating from the inner ring that still plays for whatever reason. You probably couldn't get too far into the game, but I'm amazed that it even boots up.

I have a Barker Bill's cart that STINKS. It's my only copy, so I keep it in a sandwich bag so it doesn't contaminate anything else. I've cleaned my fair share of bad carts, but this one...yeesh. With zero exaggeration and being completely serious, I think someone or something took a shit on it...and it sat in a backyard baking in the sun with that shit on it for a long time. I am afraid to open the case.

No, the junk on them is not just dirt, it's actually stained it had been there so long, and the plastic is bubbling up due to mold. Plus the connectors are so dirty and rusty no matter how much cleaning I did the only one I could get to play was SMB 3.

I used to put my NES in a cabnet under the tv. One day, one wsa sticking out too far and got the plastic broken in a place where it shut on it. I've also got a copy of one of the TMNT games for NES that is completely missing the strip of plastic next to the label. Didn't even notice it when I bought it.

Have you tried using a wet toothbrush with some washing powder? I get games like that almost every week. The latest were Super Tennis and Sim City:

My worst-condition game was my copy of Bubble Bobble for the NES. All the plastic on the thing was a disgusting brown color, and (better description unavailable) the label looked like it had rotted.

After cleaning the contacts furiously for nearly an hour, I got the damn thing to boot, and it's been running fine ever since.

It doesn't look so bad anymore, though -- I took a "donor" cart (the Gyromite I got my Famicom converter from, in fact) and peeled/alcohol-rubbed the label off, then printed and laminated it a new one. Looks much better, though obviously not original.

That would easily go to my copy of X-Men 2 on the Sega Genesis. The cartridge doesn't even have a label anymore; I made one myself using a small piece of note paper and some shipping tape. I don't know what it is, but I enjoy scooping up games I find that don't have labels, because they usually cost next-to-nothing and sometimes I end up with a game that's actually good.

By far my worst condition games have to be my sealed, Mint in Box games that have a couple creases in the shrinkwrapping. I'm so ashamed of them, I can't even bear to send them in for grading, for fear of being graded anything below an 85.

Seriously? Probably my Donkey Kong Junior for the Colecovision that has a half ripped off label. Maybe the Sears Blackjack Picture cart I have that is just covered in dirt. I can't clean the cart without destroying the label.

And for what it's worth...the carts in Sonicwolf's pic are nothing compared to some I've seen / heard of over the years in here.

Am I missing something? I don't see any pics posted by sonicwolf.

Also, I have a copy of Bust-A-Move that's in near mint condition, maybe even mint. However, for some strange reason, the game won't start. Before people recommend to clean it, I have hundreds of cart based games which I've gotten to work, including ones that people thought were broken. I've tried sanding the contacts, rubbing alcohol, and cooktop cleaner, all very good at cleaning carts, but to no avail.

My brother bought a copy of Mega Man 2 about 10 years ago. Where the board is suppose to be white, it was dark dark brown. Also some of the connectors were broken. To get it to work, he took the circuit board out of the case and scraped off the end of it with a knife to accommodate the broken connectors. Since he ripped the screws out of it, the case wouldn't go back on. So we stuck the bare board into the game genie and it worked perfectly. I eventually got a clean boxed copy, but the old one still works.

The original Dragon Warrior. I have no idea how it got this way or what, but someone must have did it on purpose(and someone who had some sortof access to my house.)

The top of the game and front of the game, the label, is ripped off. Now there is part of the label on the front cover showing, but it's sortof mid right and down that's showing. Looks like it was ripped top right down to bottom left almost.

My Kirby Super Star had a dead roach inside that was half eaten by ants. The cart no longer works.

Also had a Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter for the saturn with small holes on the recording surface, it had problems skipping some audio tracks but was playable.

Also have a Famicom game with no shell, PCB only (don't quite remember what game it was)

Maybe a cold solder joint? Or a broken solder pad? I was given a MUSHA cart that had a missing solder pad. A little sanding and soldering was all it took:

Most of my games are pretty good.
I think I ruined a Tekken 3 CD by Disc-Doctoring it, and I got a few crappy PS1 discs from EB when they were getting rid of them.
Got a bad used copy of FF Tactics with a dirty manual. It seemed to work in an emulator, but my PS2 would freeze in the opening scene.
I got a clean copy later.

I keep my games away, but somehow my dog managed to bite my Final Fantasy Legend 2 and Megaman & Bass (GBA) carts.
But they both worked fine when I last played them. I might have had to wiggle FFL2 into the GB cart slot.
I got Guardian Legend with a sun-damaged case (darkened plastic and faded label). Complete Castlevania for NES, though the box was probably flattened and the manual water-damaged when I got it.

My worst condition game ever, although I no longer have it, was my copy of Jedi Arena for the 2600. The label had gone and somewhat it was easy to take apart the cart. To keep it closed, I used a Panini sticker of Stéphane Richer from the Montreal Canadiens (heh, that was in the late 80s).

One cart that made me giggle was a loose copy of Plaque Attack with a bad case of actiplaque on the label. That was in SlyDC's stock, way back in the day (doubt he still has it).

FlufflePuff
05-28-2009, 09:55 AM
My copy of Snow Brothers has almost no label on it. It has been shredded to the point that I can see "Snow" and "thers". Ironically enough, the rest of the cart is in great shape. Normally I wouldn't have purchased a cart in that shape, but it's hard enough to find that I justified it.

As far as label condition goes, probably these:

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b48/SamuraiSmurfette/Picture063.jpg

If you can't tell, it's Megaman X2 and X3.
I traded them away for a Jaguar.

Also, I bought a model 1 SCD at a thrift a few weeks back. I assumed it wouldn't work, as was my luck with SCD units. To my surprise, it was flawless. Not only that, but there was a copy of Lethal Enforcers in it that played! I took the disc out and....wow...it honestly looked like it had been mauled by a bear eating peanut butter. Chipped edges, holes in the foil layer, gunky fingerprints...I threw it out.

Ok, there was this collection of games on Yahoo Japan. They was listed as "flood damaged", but the images looked good enough and I've dealt with water damaged items before and took a chance on this lot as what they shown was not all that bad.

I've managed to stay away from most shitty condition games although I have a few with slightly damaged labels. Actually, the copies of the Crow: City of Angels(PS1) and Marvel Vs Capcom 2(Xbox) I got at Gamestop both had so many scratches on them that it looks like a DJ was using them to make club music. But MvC2 plays fine. The Crow has slow down issues though.

With me, I opened up all of my Atari games because my Atari lost its lockout tabs on the cart slot, so now they have holes in the artwork and some have loose end labels. Other than that, I have a copy of Super RC Pro-Am that has a HUGE spot of the label missing due to a rip off damage spot from a garage sale $1.00 sticker. Dumb stickers.

I had a Sega CD from eBay come covered in grape jelly on the inside of the CD tray...

and recently I got a batch of 2600 games on ebay once again, and most were just very dirty, but one copy of Air-Sea Battle... it was epic. It was so caked in dirt and grime and what appeared to be chocolate that the thing wouldn't open to get to the leads at all, even the screw holding the thing together was caked to the plastic. It was disgusting, I used about 6 paper towels to clean that, and they all turned out black...

My copy of Chrono Trigger (SNES) is missing the front label and someone half-wrote the name in red crayon where the sticker should be. I got it in a $20 trade, so no complaints.

I used to have a copy of SMT: DDS 2 that had a "water damaged" insert (the artwork, basically). By "water" I mean "cat spray." And yeah that's how I bought it.

Finally (and I think I still have this) I have a bare Super Mario World board.

Although not a game, I purchased a SEGA Saturn on ebay that was all scratched up and had a broken disc drawer. It still worked, just looked crappy. I purchased a broken one off EBAy in better condition to fix the cosmetics.

As far as games go, most of mine are in ok condition. Some I can think of that are somewhat bad are my copy of Super C with the end label partially missing, a copy of Tetris that had some weird gunk near and on the pins (got it off and it works though), and my copy of Power Rangers for the SEGA CD that skips a lot. I'm thinking of trying to copy Power Rangers onto a CD-R one day. Sure it isnt too great, but its Power Rangers.

Woah! How do people let that happen to their games? The copy of Super Mario Kart I have isn't in terribly good condition either. It is my copy of Enduro for the Atari 2600.

The label is almost completely gone the on the side and on top of the cartridge. I got that game over 20 years ago from my grade school friend at the time. The label was like that when I received it.

I have an idea on what happened to the game label. My grade school friend has younger sisters and they were rough on his stuff. I think one of them destroyed the label.

They even did the impossible in terms of braking stuff. They even manged to brake the orginal model Gameboy he owned back in 1990 or 1991 and that happened less than a year got the system!

The good news is, he gave the game to me free at the time.

One ugly game I have is an extra non-working a copy of Pac-Man for Atari 2600 that I got for free with a system and other games that did work. It has the plastic all warped/melted and bent and it had dead flies/ flying ants, termites or who knows what inside of it and they came out as I shook the cartridge over the toilet until they were all out of it.

My second ugliest game is a copy of W&W II: IronSword for NES where its label is all torn up so there is hardly any picture left. Mostly just white sticker. IMO this is uglier than no label, but I leave it on just because someone wrote "Iron Sword" over it so I know what it is.

Another bad one is my copy of Pong: The Next Level for Playstation. It is scratched up so bad I couldn't even make a duplicate copy of it, but somehow it plays on some of my Playstation brand systems while it doesn't on others. At least it was free because it didn't work for my stepdad.

I also have a copy of Dragon Warrior 4 for NES that has a crack on it but It still looks good because the label is not damaged. The crack is underneath the lable a bit and comes out a little ways from it. It was a good way to get the game for half its value. ($25)

I recently acquired a disc only copy of Triple Play 2002 for PS2 that is stored in a cd jewel case. A "junk shop" owner tossed into my bag for free with some other purchases.

This disc looks like it was rubbed with sandpaper on the bottom. I've seen music cd's and some Sega Saturn games in worse condition than this game but have NEVER seen a PS2 game in such bad shape.

Will probably get it buffed by a friend just to see if it can be salvaged. Probably a waste of time and money, but again it was free.
