I knew since the day I got my GameGear that something was wrong with it. Whenever I used the AC adapter, the system got hot enough to make my hands sweat horribly. I somehow thought this was normal.

Then one day it made a popping sound and the image went out. I thought it was the whole screen, but I found out that if you shine a flashlight through the back you can see the picture.

How can I replace the backlight on this? It seems to be fine otherwise.

Recap the board...

Then, check the continuity of the 2 thermal fuses that are under the light. They should read zero ohms.

By their name, they are thermal in nature. Get them too hot and they open up. When replacing them you need some hemostats or kelly clamps to keep from blowing the fuse when soldering in a replacement.
