I'm predicting this more because I want it than I think it's what's in store but, 2D Mario for Wii and 2D Metroid for DS.

I predict a lot of pissed off "hardcore gamers" and I suspect I'll find at least one game that will put a really huge smile on my face.

Maybe im dreaming but I'd like to see a new Star tropics game, Kid Icarus, a mother trilogy on ds and Professor Layton have a release date

Just so everybody knows E3 is also on the channel G4 which is Verizon Fios 191 and Time Warner 105, all day today.
On a side note, I'm hoping for some kind of mmo on the Wii.

F-Zero, a new 2-D Metroid, dates for new Professor Layton games, and a new Super Paper Mario-type game are all I'm hoping for.
I realistically expect only one of them, though.

New Metroid is killer, as well as the Wii Mario titles.

This might have been the most disappointing presentation by any company in the history of E3. All they could offer was a 4 player Super Mario, a sequel to Super Mario Galaxy that looked exactly like the first game and a new Metroid that is probably over a year away? Everybody might be game to Nintendo, but I guess people that actually like games aren't included in that everybody. Really, really makes me sad.

Indeed. But then Nintendo couldn't care less as they know Wii Fit Plus and Sports Resort are going to print even more money for them. People will buy Galaxy 2 even though it is just an extension of the original.

Nobody can complain about Mario Galaxy 2 when Modern Warfare 2 is releasing this year and Forza 3 was shown during Microsoft's presentation.
The Wii showing wasn't very good, but they showed a lot of awesome stuff for DS. It was boring at first, they brought out a guy that looked like Quinton Tarantino, then Satoru Iwata came out sounding like Mario. And, what will the Vitality Sensor do?

Very lame presentation. Awful really. LOL @ the weak pandering towards "hardcore" gamers about halfway through. It came off laughably stiff and artificial.
I did like the look of New SMB and Metroid for Wii. Hopefully there's a standard control scheme (i.e. no Wiimote waggle/motion control nonsense). Golden Sun DS is long overdue. Happy to see it return.

this years show is playing out the same way

In technology, no one gets it right the first time. Hard drives were as big as refridgerators in the 60's. Vibrating controllers required a special add-on in 1997. Cars once didn't go more than 25 mph. Yet all I mentioned were innovations that laid the groundwork for the future, just like the original Wii controller.

They could have announced a new Kid Icarus, Zelda, Starfox and Kirby game for release this year as well, and you'd probably still find something to bitch about.

The problem isn't that the technology wasn't there, the problem is that Nintendo told us the original Wii-motes had the same capabilities as Wii Motion+.
Here, i'll show you why the developers are jaded. Pop a copy of wii sports into a Wii and load up baseball. Now swing your wii-mote around until the game registers a swing. Congratulations, you've just maxed out the remote's sensors. Notice it doesn't take a whole lot of force to max them out either, any quick motion will do it.
So as a developer, what do you have to do? You have to use buffering, prediction, and overall guessing to map remote motion to game actions. Go back to baseball, when you're pitching, the speed of the pitch has very little to do with how hard you flick the remote, and is basically just pure randomization.
But it's easy to fool yourself into thinking it's the force of the throw, and that's what Nintendo banked on. It seems completely disingenuous to tell everyone how great the wii-mote is and how it maps your movements, when half the technology is trickery and guessing behind the scenes.
When developers found out the technology wasn't what they were told, they stayed away from the system entirely. Now Nintendo realized their marketing set the expectations too high for the technology and are making me spend another $20 per controller just to play new games the way the system was advertised? I think not.
Nintendo already tried to defend it by saying the Motion+ technology wasn't feasible back in 2006, which is fine. But if the technology wasn't ready, their marketing shouldn't have driven it into everyone's head that it was going to be 1:1.

Agreed. I haven't even plugged my Wii in in at least a year, so I wasn't worried about Nintendo's conference at all. But once it happened, and my friend called me up to tell me about the new Metroid and two new Mario games, I'm totally stoked for the Wii again.

I was satisfied by the time Iwata was talking about the vitality sensor. The actual medical counterpart is an expensive little bugger, so I'm curious as to how much functionality it has. Heart rate will definitely be fun for horror games (scare you more when your pulse drops, make the most of it when it's high), but will it adjust the experience for my blood oxygen level, temperature, or perspiration rate?
I'm glad to see Mario Galaxy 2, but honestly, it's not huge for me. I liked Galaxy, and I'm still working on it, but I liked Sunshine more. Tiny planets don't feel like cohesive levels to me, so I really just liked it for the gameplay. I may like the sequel better, who knows.
New SMB Wii might be alright, I'll wait to make my opinion on it. Same with Crystal Bearers. I'll be watching both.
Considering that I expected NOTHING from Nintendo this year (aside from typical Wii stuff), I was satisfied. Then that final video began to roll, and I thought "oh, so Nintendo has something to show with more specific appeal." At first, I figured it was just a new Ninja Gaiden, a series I haven't really followed. That feeling changed pretty quickly, and I found it difficult to get back to work afterwards. I didn't really feel the Prime series, but if this advances the main story, I won't care if it's a shooter.

Disagree. If they had announced Kid Icarus, Zelda, Starfox or even a really new Mario game that wasn't a blatant cash-in on an existing title, I would have been more than satisfied. I would have even been very satisfied with a new IP or two. You can't seriously be stoked about a four player Super Mario that doesn't even look at all fun, a game that looks identical to the SMG game I already own and a Metroid game which is at least a year away (which, I am excited about, but it does me no good this far out). How about innovating like they did up until and including the Gamecube? Remember when Nintendo basically created 3D console platform gaming with Super Mario 64? Remember when they made console RPGs cool and accessible to the masses with Zelda? It's a pretty sad day when the most innovative company out there just decides it's better to cash in than actually do anything to move gaming forward.

Right, because God knows the Wii and DS are far from innovative. :P
With that said, New Super Mario Bros. Wii (or 2, as some sites are reporting), looks like a blast. Some gaming buddies and I have dreamed about a co-op Mario title since the NES days. My only qualm with the game is that it could totally have Super Mario 2 synchronicity if they had Peach playable as well... unless, there are characters we haven't seen yet...
Oh, and a comeback from the Koopa Kids?

Have you played Little Big Planet? When I saw the 4 player NSMB this morning, I was shocked at how similar the game play was to LBP. Of course, LBP has been out for a while now and allows you to do almost infinite level and character design while this "new" SMB game limits you to what looks like a pretty confined set of game mechanics.
Icarus Moonsight
06-02-2009, 10:15 PM
Seriously, limited? Jesus, does every game have to be a freakin' sandbox now? The Mario platforming formula is one of the most tried and true in all of gaming. Not straying to far from the core elements would be key to it's success... not hinder it.

Nintendo's conference wasn't bad. Microsoft's and Sony's were just better.
Wii Motion is last years news that never happened. SMB2 and Metroid are next year -- I bet SMB2 will be Christmas.
Golden Sun? Really...cool, but not exciting.
New Super Mario brothers looked ridiculous with four players trying to keep up with each other. Good luck with that.

Dude, chill out. You're taken this WAY too seriously. It's only ONE show. E3 isn't the "battle to end all battles" type of deal. Tokyo Game Show, Comic Con, and plenty chances for Nintendo to unveil new projects. What I've learned from them is when they're cooking up something good, they'll let us know about it....in due time.
Look at PunchOut, after 15 years and no mention at e3, it sold over 100K in the first week alone. The proof in the pudding for a game company isn't the hype or the big show, it's the games! Sadly, players forget that notion all too often.

Not sure where it was stated that 10% of the levels are recycled; just some content. Content doesn't necessarily equal levels.
Content for all we know could be the Planetarium that looks almost identical. Who knows. I for one will put my faith into Miyamoto once more as I've done for the last 23 years of my life since 1986. He still continues to amaze an old school gamer like myself.
-------------------
On another note, why are their so many zombie games? Why do inFamous and Prototype look like the same game to me? People keep talking about Nintendo going back to the well over and over, but what about MS and Sony. LBP again, Forza again, GT again, GoW again... same shit over and over. People bitch about all the iterations of the NDS, but what about the PSP? People forget that it is also on its 3rd iteration.
I really wish people would just look at great games for what they are, great games. Even if it is another Mario or Gran Turismo, etc.

I'm not claiming that there aren't some great games coming out for the Wii. What I am claiming is that they aren't by Nintendo unfortunately and that their press event was a huge disappointment. The new Metroid game everyone is hyped about looks like it won't be out until holiday 2010. That's 18 months from now. Between now and the end of the year, Nintendo is only releasing three first party games. I guess it's just more support for the idea that there is no way you can only own one platform nowadays and be satisfied. I'm headed to E3 tomorrow morning, so I will try Red Steel 2 and Tiger Woods out myself and hopefully find some other stuff that Nintendo just ignored in their attempt to appeal to people other than gamers.

Gotta admit the new Metroid really gave me goose bumps.
Imo, Samus was always meant to be seen in 3rd person. Didn't like the Prime series. To me this is the way it should have always been.
This to me was the game of the show.
New Super Mario brothers looked ridiculous with four players trying to keep up with each other. Good luck with that.
No it didn't, it looked awesome. Laugh all you want, it'll sell more than 99% of games for the PS60.
Wii motion may be cool but can we get it to market already...oh yeah, how about a decent game for it too...Red Steel 2?? Really??
It's coming next week with Tiger Woods '10. Is that decent enough of a game? Red Steel 2 will also be to Red Steel 1 what Street Fighter II was to Street Fighter I. The concept of the original game was fine, it just had it's share of problems, and all will be fixed in the sequel.

People keep bringing up Red Steel 2 as some sort of "i told you so" for how great motion+ is going to be. Guess what, people were ranting and raving about the first Red Steel too and it sucked. Don't give ubi the benefit of the doubt on the sequel until you've played it for yourself. Remember how nintendo thought red steel 1 was so awesome they let it be the first wii game shown to the public? All the reviewers said it was awesome and was going to be a great game with an awesome new control scheme. Which is exactly what they're saying for the sequel.

No one is retarded for buying it. I needed another controller and bought it two years ago. It was well worth the extra $10.

Red Steel was a launch game. The concept was good, it just had some problems. I will say this, however. The game is under-rated. While not exactly good, it is certainly not the stinker some say it is. It's about a 6/10, certainly there are many worse games. Give it a break, it was a launch title from a 3rd party company.

You aren't forced to buy anything.
If you want to play either of those two new games, then you are FORCED to buy the new hardware.
