View Full Version : the big three how did they rank at e3?
I know its not over yet but as far as press conferences go how did nintendo, microsoft and sony rank among each other?
for xbox I could have done without the beatles rock band and used a lil more mass effect 2 in its spot,(why waste so much time on a game thats not an exclusive when you have a great one that your not showing off?)
what I took away from the games was this, finally metal gear is on 360, now I dont have to feel so bad for not having a ps3...
natal made me jizz in my pants, the fact that lionhead is already making a game for it (milo gave me goosebumps) makes me think that it can be what they say it is...
overall, they game me the exclusives, they added facebook, lastfm is free for goldmembers which is awesome, and new movie stuff, and shocked me with natal..
they did everything they should have done...
--------------------------------------------------------
nintendo to me for the first 70% of the presentation looked to repeat boringness of last year, I just wanted to slap that cammy woman off the floor, she looks like she should be counting money and not talking about video games... then the finger slip pulse reader... in my head I was like great! now my grandmother will love the wii even more now... geez
but when reggie came out showed conduit, new resident evil, new dead space, new mario galaxy 2 and new metroid I was alright nintendo, you finally did alright for yourself... I cant hate, Im not a casual gamer, so it was nice to see them bring some decent games to the wii finally....
overall I think they made their audence happy, they gave the new wii sports to the casual gamers, added to the ds libary, and brought some really good games for the hardcore to the wii... solid performance...
----------------------------------------
for sony, uncharted 2 looked amazing... when mag came on with the 256 ppl on the screen that was really cool... the ps2? yeah i guess, sure thats great...ok...
the new psp for $250 is fail, I can go on and on about why, but I'll leave it at that... the ps3 has agent and heavy rain, which looked to be really cool... gt on psp is cool i guess...new motion controller im skeptic about but hey could be good...last guardian ooooh, yes me likey, me likey lots... then god of war 3, we all knew this was awesome already...
overall it was good, the psp at $250 hindered it all a lil bit but uncharted 2 god of war last guardian kept it nice...
...................
so overall...
exclusives microsoft wins... (mass effect 2, 1vs 100, splinter cell, halos, alan wake)
network xboxlive wins... (facebook, twitter, last.fm faster movies)
hardware xbox wins (natal <milo> )
this is just imo... and im a no one
the exclusives are close though with sony...

A new 2D Mario game on the Wii, as well as a new 3D one, and a new 3rd person Metroid game co-developed by Team Ninja trumps anything any of the other systems could have shown.
I'm very excited about what's coming to 360 (Assassin's Creed 2 NOW, please!), and the PS3 showing has me thinking that it will soon be time to finally buy one, but Nintendo impressed me the most.
Oh, and it's about time we see a new Golden Sun!

Microsoft
Sony (follows closely)
Nintendo (still 90% crap besides the Mario and Metroid games that are well over a year off)
Those placings are mainly due to the motion tech each showed, since almost all of the games were already announced and shown prior. Microsoft did have a good number of new exclusives to talk about...and Sony did have the new PSP, which is kinda 'meh'. New Metal Gear is a plus too.

Id say overall the entire thing was a FAIL!
A few nice games some of them we wont even see untill next year or close to it.
Facebook twitter and internet radio on 360 ..........Whoopty dooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
You already get that for FREE on PS3 and you don't have to PAY for GOLD.
Plus I still don't get the big obsession with twitter. It's the same shit thats already built into myspace and facebook.
The PSPgo for $250 pshhhhhh I paid $200 with 3 games for a 60 gig ps3 plus the only game I play on my psp now is called "Wipe the dust off and charge it 3 " so no way im buying that one.

Yeah Microsoft won. I was more impressed with the voice recognition, but Natal is awesome. I think the PS3's motion controller looked like a much better tool for 'action' gaming and on some levels may surpass Natal, but neither item is a finished product yet. Nintendo did good, can't complain, they just didn't bring enough hardware.
The PSP Go would be much better if it had a QWERTY and a cell plan. I am holding back on it until I see some reviews. I think the controls on it might make it a must buy, espeacially for PS1 titles...
I'm not a Tony Hawk fan, but that skateboard looked awesome...

1. Microsoft - Project Natal. It still could bomb, but the presentation, and the images in my head about the potential of this thing are amazing. I like all the new functionality for live...the group movie watching / MST3K night ability will be awesome. And a few nice games too.
2. Sony - They frustrated me, because I'm still not on board for a PS3. It's getting closer, but announcing a price drop is an almost mandatory step at this point. I really want to play the Uncharted games though...oh decisions. I think the PSP Go is far overpriced, and they didn't announce (except by way of tiny video montages) many PSP games that really interested me. Their motion controller looked pretty good.
3. Nintendo - By far the most boring show. But dang it, they talked about more games that hit my "happy place" than MS or Sony combined. New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Sports Resort, Tiger Woods 10, Super Mario Galaxy 2...all made me happy.
So all in all, eh, who the hell cares...just bring on the games.

1. microsoft - honestly, they had me at crackdown 2, forza3, and left4dead2. alan wake is shaping up nicely. halo's not really my thing, but odst has me intrigued, although i still won't pick it up at launch. scv finally has me interested in the series. fffxiii running on the 360 was great, and it's going to be awesome to finally get metal gear on the 360, but i'm a bit disappointed at no mgs4. i'll def use the facebook app. then they showed natal. the promo movie was pretty puke-worthy, but the live demos showed how responsive the tech is. def interested to see how devs can integrate this with traditional control. 'milo' stole the show though... truly a omgwtf moment.
2. sony - if ms hadn't had natal, sony might've had enough to edge out ms this year. still very impressed with what they showed. pspgo seems pointless and expensive, so no points there. ff14 on ps3... no points for you b/c it's an mmo. ff7 is a meh. mgspw will be nice to fill in the gap between mgs3 and mg1. uncharted2 looks pretty fun. god of war 3 looks like a prettier and gorier gow1, and that's totally not a bad thing. sony's motion control was pretty impressive; seemed like a mid-step between motionplus and natal. it def would be easier for devs to make traditional experiences with this system over natal, but i feel like natal has more potential, if devs can wrap their heads around it. overall a good show from sony, even if it was a bit psp-heavy.
3. nintendo - ok, so it wasn't last year's fiasco, but it wasn't great either. i'll go ahead and get this out of the way now: nintendo's properties don't hold the magic for me like they once did. didn't finish sm64 and never played galaxy, so urmrgay2 doesn't hold a lot of interest for me. i'll prob play it eventually, but not before it's below $20 used. don't have a ds, and don't intend on getting one anytime soon, so those announcements were moot for me. to echo what others have said, motionplus just seems to make the wii do what it already promised it would. nsmb.wii sounds like a wii game i'd actually buy. wii vitality sensor... just wtf. totally thought iwata was joking, but he never laughed. then reggie announced that they hadn't forgotten the hardcore, only to reveal it was 3 game we'd already heard about. 'metroid other m' was a good suprise (despite the stupid name). as long as it controls as well as it looks, we'll be in for a treat. overall, not a train wreck, but not a party train either.

Sony failed to impress me on any front other than GoW3 and Last Guardian, MS got me one step closer to a 360 with Natal and Epic's Shadow Complex and Nintendo made the event for me with Metroid and Mario.
Biggest shames? PSPGo price point, Wii Vitality Sensor and the return of Cammy Dunaway.
If it wasn't for Natal and the Nintendo games, I'd have nothing this year from the big three.
Better than last year.

I'll rank according to the amount of games shown that interest me (only exclusives are listed):
1. Sony:
-The Last Guardian
-Fat Princess PSP
-GoW 3 (not Gears, the OG "of War")
-Ratchet and Clank
-Uncharted 2 - maybe I'll enjoy this
-GT5
-Gran Turismo PSP - how did they fit 800 cars and 35 tracks into this?
-Mod Nation Racers - hopefully this has a LOT more features than what they showed.
Sony's motion wand (almost exactly the same as a Wii remote), if it actually ever comes out, seemed more useful to me than Natal, it can be used for "traditional" games and "casual" things. It doesn't have full body tracking but how much does that matter?
2. Nintendo:
-Super Mario Galaxy 2
-Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 days
-New Super Mario Bros. Wii
-Mario & Luigi
-Golden Sun
-Zelda Spirit Tracks
-Metroid: Other M
-Wii Sports Resort - I might get this...
3. Microsoft:
-I've tried so hard to get into shooters, I've tried Halo 2 and 3, the first Metroid Prime, Gears of War 1 and 2, I completed Half-Live 2 and the expansions (Orange Box), and completed Prey (I even bought the Collector's Edition of this). The only shooters I can think of that I've loved are the Ratchet and Clank series, Lost Planet, and GTA. So because of my lack of shooter love I hated Microsoft's presentation...maybe I'll get Forza 3 someday.
And Natal would have been more interesting to me if Microsoft would have shown it better:

Frankly I wasn't blown away by any of the conferences...but here's where I'd rank them:
1. Sony
Honestly Sony showed more diversity with their game lineup than any of the others. Although I'm not very interested in a lot of it, there are a few games that got me excited for the PS3 for the first time in a while. Modnation Racers, Uncharted 2, The Last Guardian, Ratchet & Clank, and God of War 3 are all coming along nicely. Modnation in particular has me excited just because I love games that allow you to create things yourself.
Throw in MAG, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIV, and a pretty solid little PSP lineup don't interest me in the least. A wide variety of different genres, some new IPs, and a few returning ones made their presentation quite interesting.
PSP Go price point is a total joke. Sometimes I really have to scratch my head and wonder what Sony are thinking. In this economy is there really going to be a market for a device like this? Lastly, I actually liked their motion sensing presentation. It'll give me a use for my Playstation Eye anyways. I'm curious to see how this thing shapes up in the future.
2. Microsoft
Normally I'm on the MS bandwagon...but this year they really left me flat. I'm getting SOOOOOO tired of shooting things in video games. Since 90% of the stuff announced at their presentation involved shooting...there really wasn't much there for me.
I don't like Halo, or racing games. I don't need anymore Call of Duty, or Left4Dead (way too soon for a sequel). Alan Wake I was excited about...but now I'm thinking it looks more like a Resident Evil clone than an exploration driven horror game.
Crackdown 2 I'm somewhat interested in, but with games like inFamous, and Prototype released I'm not expecting it to fill their super power sandbox need that I had when the original was released. Especially considering the fact that it *GASP* includes your main character shooting..."yay." What I like about inFamous and Prototype is the fact that your powers are your weapons...not boring guns I've already shot in sixty games before this.
Natal looks like a pretty interesting little toy. Frankly it didn't make me go gaga like a lot of people, but it has promise. I could see a game like Black & White working very well with something like that. Honestly I'm not interested in waving my arms around in a fighting game, or needing to high kick, etc. The ball bouncing game looked like a fun time though.
3. Nintendo
...-_-
Nintendo had a better conference this year. Better in the fact that they announced some things to satisfy their hardcore fanbase. Sadly that's not me anymore. I can't get excited about the five Mario games they announced, or any of their more casual lineup. I don't like Japanese RPGs...so even their DS stuff didn't interest me in the least (and I love the DS). Some of the DSi Ware was fairly cute.
Vitality Sensor? Motion Plus? New Wii Fit? Bathroom break time...
When Reggie started talking about the last game I was actually hopeful it was a new IP. Sadly I was treated to yet another Metroid game. This one with a horrible title. The gameplay looked interesting...but really would have worked better with a whole new IP.
Looking at the Wii's coming games...I really can't say I regret selling mine a year or so back. I'd like to play Punch Out...but besides that there's really nothing there for me. Nintendo started losing me with their consoles during the N64 era...and now I'm over it entirely.
No more Mario/Zelda/Metroid for me. Good to hear they announced things to please their fans though. Just not a single thing that interested me in the slightest. At least Microsoft caught my attention with Natal.

I'm not posted in terms of the games but in the conferences.
1st. Microsoft , hands down best presentation.
2nd. Sony , comes in #2 as it did have some new features, nothing really due this year.
3rd. Nintendo One game does not make a E3. Rehashing things they showed last year.
Last : Ubisoft, yes I know they aren't a console maker but that was by far the WORST E3 press conference I've seen.

I liked Sony's presentation alot. I don't think any of the presentation actually sucked, even the presentation with the PSP Go. The only thing bad about their entire presentation was the 249.99 price that the PSP Go received which I'd think would have been better at 199.99.
What I was interested in their presentation
-Uncharted 2
-Gran Turismo PSP
-God of War 3
-Last Guardian
-Resident Evil Portable(an announcement only yet improves the presentation)
-Mod Racers
The new PSP Eye Toy motion sensing is basically an upgraded version of the regular Wiimote with as much functionality as the Wii Motion Plus. However, it uses an outside peripheral which the line of vision cannot be crossed. As this seems like it's into it's Beta stages mostly, this is probably the worst thing in Sony's E3 presentation because it's guaranteed we won't see any of until atleast next year and even when we do, the Wii Motion Plus is still overall better even though pretty much equally functional.
--
For Microsoft, the best thing in their presentation was Natal. It looks amazing, but it's not very believable. If this actually catches on and works, I would buy another 360 solely for this. The reason Sony's Eye Toy Motion Sensing looked so bad is because of how good this looked.
-Shadow Complex
-Splintercell
-Forza 3
--
With Nintendo, it didn't look as good as Sony's or Microsoft's but I didn't really like the Wiimote itself or the Wii's casual gaming since the Wii came out as it isn't really true motion sensing. After watching WiiSports Resort with the Wii Motion plus, they've got some actual true motion sensing.
Nintendo also had some other interesting things in the show.
-Golden Sun DS
-Metroid the Other M
Metroid the Other M looks more like a Metroid May Cry or Ninja Samus(okay, lame pun.) I didn't like the Metroid Prime games really, but if I was to get a Wii, this is definitely the first party game that I would pick up.
It really didn't seem that there was anything Nintendo had that actually looked good other than that. I personally didn't enjoy even the 2D Mario playthrough that they had as it looked like an extremely bland level design. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 though shows how amazing the graphics can be on a system like the DS though, but other than graphics it didn't impress me in the least.
So to me, it was Sony, Microsoft, then Nintendo. Microsoft was pretty much just as good as Sony's solely because of Natal and a couple other good exclusives, though Sony did show alot more content that I wanted. Nintendo showed some good stuff and actually got me interested in purchasing a just because of the Wii Motion Plus and the new Metroid looked really nice.

Just out of curiousity, what makes GT5 interesting enough to be listed, but Forza 3 only a maybe? While Forza was initially derided as a poor man's GT, with Forza 2 the situation was reversed. GT5 will undoubtedly be a remarkably well produced game, but if it is anything like its predecessors the physics will miss the mark. I'm inclined to believe Forza 3 will be closer to getting the physics right - Forza 2 had some issues, but it was still much closer than the GT series (though still not as good as PC stuff). Other than having an even bigger selection of pointless riced out econoboxes, and the unknown of the WRC and NASCAR licenses, what gives GT5 the edge?

I gave Forza 3 a maybe because it seems right now that I would get GT5 first. Then if I have that, why not wait a while to get Forza 3 (when it's cheap)? Right now I'm trusting the quality and amount of content that could potentially be in GT5 a little more than Forza 3. GT5 definitely seems like it will have at least twice as many cars as Forza 3 (there were 700+ in GT4, 400 are said to be in Forza 3), but will GT5 have more than the 100 tracks in Forza 3 (I read that it will have around 95)?
But really, I'm not one of those huge racing fans that buys the racing wheels to replace the analog stick. So I guess my opinion doesn't count as much because those 2 games are made to be driving simulators.

I actually was very impressed with Nintendos game lineup, and thought that Microsoft had a strong showing as well. I was not impressed with the Natal however, due to its limited game usage. Only time will tell.
Sony needs a wake up call, and it is sad to see where they are. Their price point on the PSP go is epic fail. Really dissapointed that there was not a price point drop on the PS3. For me, that is really what I wanted to hear from them. They had some good games, but until the price point is addressed, those good games wont mean alot.

Microsoft's show was definitely the best overall presentation with the best....everything.
1. Microsoft--The exclusives were hot, their version of motion control(Natal) has the potential to be light years better than both the competition and they are stilll expanding on the greatest console online application of all time--Xbox live. I also feel that they gave way too much time to the Beatles Rock Band and Paul and Ringo appeared to be more like drunken college students than legendary rock stars. But that aside, everything else was superb. Also, finally securing the last major third party series(Metal Gear Solid) was a nice but very expected touch. We'll never have to hear about it from Sony fans again. But the highlight of the show was the announcment of Halo: Reach. Do you know how many millions of people around the world have been waiting to play interactive versions of the best selling Halo novels? I got goosebumps after watching that teaser. We will finally get to play as Kelly, Linda and the rest of John 117's spartan squad. And the beta key arrives in three months thanks to Halo: ODST. I am so happy about this:)
2. Nintendo--Perhaps the most boring show ever, although I heard last years was pretty brutal. Although their show was boring I am pumped for Metroid: The Other M. The Conduit, Resident Evil: DC and Dead Space are all nice but we already knew about them. I also don't see why everyone hates Cammy. Regardless of who spoke her lines it wouldn't have made the show any better. I think she did well and of course having Reggie appear always makes things interesting. But ultimately they failed because the crowd(and myself) were hardly into what they were saying or showing. Had they panned thru the crowd you would have seen that half of them fell asleep midway thru the show.
3. Sony--I'm going to keep it real. God of War 3, Mag and The Agency all looked cool but all of them have been known to exist since atleast last years E3(the Agency just got it's title but it's been known since E3 07). Sony's attempt at motion sensing comes off as a blatant Wii controller rip off, adding only a small ball(which makes it look like a penis with one testicle) to differenciate it. It might have been cool had it been shown a year ago, but getting shown this year(especially after Microsoft showed project Natal) makes it look like Sony has once again been stuck with third place ideas. Sony had two ultimate fails this year. The first is rather obvious and will most likely be what many people associate with Sony's 2009 E3 show. And that would be the PspGo's $250 price tag. The reason why people remember Sony's 2006 E3 conference is because of the announcement of the PS3's $499 and $599 price tags so this year is mirroring that. The second fail is something that I think sums up Sony's whole press conference this year and I'm going to wrap it up in four words: "Hanna Montana Lylac Psp".

Overall I think this E3 was a very big push forward for technology.
If nothing else the introduction of motion software/hardware for both ps3 and 360 let me know that there won't be a new console for a while and they are dedicated to their current models.
A bad E3 to me would have been a new 360/2 or PS4, though I think Nintendo needs to get their HD model out.
Makes me feel comfortable in my investment and I can't wait to try Sony's motion control, I liked it the best and not only cause I have a PS3, but cause the tracking was amazing to me and pinpoint accurate.

The technology hasn't been good enough or cheap enough to make it commercially viable. It's the same reason it took HDTV over 20 years to see mass acceptance here in the US and why we don't have fleets of self-driving electric cars or all of the other amazing technological advancements we have been promised for decades.

There are 800 licensed cars on GT for the PSP, which is just an upgraded version of GT4 supposedly. Guaranteed if the portable version is going to have that many then the console version will have many more.
Depending on the system you own, either game is the best choice. If you're against choosing Forza or GT5 then Test Drive Unlimited needs to be chosen.
Atari needs to announce Test Drive Unlimited 2.

What the hell was up with Ubisoft's presentation? Talk about unnecessary. That's nice that your "tween" games are selling like hotcakes, but E3 is not really the venue to be showing that stuff off. People who buy the Imagine games aren't the type of people who watch E3 coverage (and they certainly don't attend), or even remotely pay attention to it. Red Steel 2 does look good, but they should've just shown that as part of Nintendo's presentation, which needed punching up.
Sony was actually the best of the three, which is weird considering their past poor showings.

No new IPs from Nintendo huh? Another Mario and Metroid is always nice, but I'm wishing they'd bring up something new aside from the "Wii ______" titles.
I didn't really pay attention to this E3 though. My current gen wishlist is so backlogged that I could practically feed off of last year's releases until E3 2010.

The focus of E3 has been the mainstream press and the general consumers they serve for at least the last two years. That's why you had Ubisoft focus on tween stuff and Sony spend time talking about stuff like Hannah Montana and Nintendo not even mentioning some of the harder core gamer stuff in their booth. Stuff that is designed for gamers now gets introduced at dedicated company gamer day events, TGS or just by announcing it through the blogs, news sites and magazines.
I think the show floor was very different this year than it was before the two year break in E3. Certainly far fewer people and I think the big three actually performed very similarly to each other on the show floor as compared to what were some pretty poor presentations. The most surprising thing to me was how far Konami has fallen. Other than announcing the new MGS stuff, their booth was large and very empty as people seemed to have moved beyond Karaoke Revolution, DDR, Pop N Music and could've cared less about their new Katamari clone, Zephyr.
I really don't think this E3 is going to make much difference. All of the big three revealed some great exclusives and there was nothing announced that I think will do much to move additional systems.

If only Sony or Sega would announce a US release of Yakuza 3 then Sony would win this E3 no contest(even though I personally think they're already winning.) Natal would atleast keep 360 from dragging too much, but there'd be too much awesomeness being brought to the table by Sony.

If you're against choosing Forza or GT5 then Test Drive Unlimited needs to be chosen.
Atari needs to announce Test Drive Unlimited 2.
Whoa, you have me interested. If this (http://www.the-magicbox.com/0903/game090301b.shtml) is really in development then it looks like I'll have to get it too. It looks like it will have some beautiful tracks.

I was actually talking about the first one. I didn't even know a second one was coming out. I was just hoping one would. Now that I know it's been announced, here's hoping they release it sometime soon. I'm definitely going to pick it up.
If you look at the very last screen, it shows you the world map. Basically a street racing game and easily the best racer I've played. It's basically a simcade instead of entirely being simulation.

I believe that's more of what I'm into anyway, the GT series seems to mostly be about flat professional racing tracks, while TDU looks to have more track variety (right?).

Yeah. The first is for PS2, PSP, and 360. I'd highly recommend it for 360 over the others, but if you don't have a 360 available, then the other two would be worth it.
The island itself will take atleast 20 minutes to drive from one end to the other and the tracks are spread out along routes throughout the island. There are a ton of races. The reason to get the 360 version is because customizable races to create your own specific check point races or any specific race in the game as well as be able to ride motorcycles.

The only thing I care about that came out of e3 was this video.

Definitely seems like something I would enjoy between cravings for GTAIV. I'll see if I can find a 360 copy for a good price. It might be a little while before I get it though, I'm trying to hold my money to finally buy a PS3.
