View Full Version : Some SNES programming stuff, and perhaps a proto?

Well, I just got this bundle of stuff from a former NES/SNES programmer, thought you guys would be the ones to turn to to make sense of this mess. ;P
The pictures I took are quite big, so instead of linking pictures in this topic, here is a gallery with them all:
http://img5.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=dsc0004jbo.jpg
This first item is the PromICE Universal Firmware Development Tool. I was told it was used for programming SNES games, I believe Jeopardy for the SNES was made on this particular unit. It's attached to the Super Mario World cart, haven't tested it other then powering it up, which it does fine, but doesn't display anything on the TV screen.(Assuming it needs to be hooked to a PC)
Next, I've got a bunch of boards, ROMs, and whatnot, for making your own cartridges. One lil' gem is a cart that has Super Mario Bros and Tetris on a switch for going back and forth. Apparently the version of Tetris on this cart is the Atari version. A couple are labeled as Donkey Kong Jr. and Mario Bros., forgot to take a picture of flip-side, but I believe a couple have the chips removed.
One cartridge in particular got my attention. It's a Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt cartridge, with some holes cut into the front of it. Inside, the top left corner of the board says "Atari Games - Proto Cart". Seems like a dumb question, but is this really a prototype game? I'm a little scared to plop it into my NES to test it.
Of course, this all wouldn't be so handy without the documentation, so I've got the full SNES development manual, user manual for the PromICE, and y65
65816 Assembler Manual.
Anyone kind enough to tell me what I've stumbled upon is worth? Thank ya kindly!

The SNES board in the plastic is a EPROM board that supports up to 8 megabit. It also has onboard SRAM, and the paper should list the capacity. Probably worth around $40-$50.

DO NOT SELL TO ANYONE TILL YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE....
Just a word of advice

I definitely think some of that stuff is worth more than $40-50 for sure. Looks to be a lot of interesting stuff to say the least!

Add two zeros to the end of that number, and sell it to me! Hahaha!

Considering that there's some hacked up NES stuff in there, and some stuff says Atari, it's possible this was some stuff from when they broke the NES copy protection to make their own carts. It's a longshot, but that's my guess.
Try playing some stuff. It looks like you can mix and match PRG and CHR chips on some of those boards with IC mounts, just make sure to remember what went where originally.
From the looks of it, you've either got somebody's hacked games, or a box-o-protos.

Beaglepuss, you need to be lined up buying all my unreleased protos. Lobo for Genesis? =P

Is Lobo complete/for sale??? For some reason I thought that was one of the titles that you were taking to the grave with you. Hoppin' Mad has created a little nest-egg however. . .
As enticing as Lobo is, you know my loyalties are to the NES.

Nope, all my stuff is available for dumping with the exception of one SNES game. The only NES stuff I have available right now would be Street Hero, Fighting Simulator 2 in 1, War on Wheels, and Dungeons and Dragons Dragons of Flame that are undumped. I have an undumped Famicom version of Titan Warriors, but I think the NES version was dumped.

Hold the phone!!! You picked up Street Hero and Fight Sim!?!?!?!?! I didn't know you managed to land those two! That's sweet. Have you given either a play yet?
Back on topic: Sell me NES protos. That is all.
In all seriousness, I'm curious as to where you actually managed to score something like this. Do you live in Washington State by any chance?

They're mine because everyone was slow, LOL
Street Hero is a beat-em-up by Innovation, and Fighting Simulator 2 in 1 is the Game Boy Culture Brain one, kind of like the Pyramids of Ra thing, and I don't live in Washington. You can see where I live right near my avatar!

That Washington comment wasn't meant for you Dream, but the for the thread starter. I know where you live (or at least where your mail comes from lol).
Is SH the same as the Game Gear game? Is it any good?
Had I know who was selling those two titles, I can assure you that I would have jumped at the chance.

Beaglepuss, I told your brother about me getting those titles months ago, but he did not seem too interested because either he wanted the carts, or wanted to talk about the "money" thing first. If you want the carts, you can check my PM =) but I could not let those things sit around.
Not everyone sells publicly you know =P
Oh, and Street Hero is not the same as the unreleased Game Gear game.

I'd be more inclined to think these are protos rather then homebrew/hacked games. The man I bought it from said he used to program about twenty years ago, and that this is basically all the stuff leftover. I know he mentioned working on Jeopardy and some other games, and most of the stuff I've got is Atari/Tengen related, so I'm going to assume he worked for them back in the day.
But you guys didn't think that's all I had, did ya? I've uploaded some more pictures of the rest of the stuff here, as well as the first batch of pictures: http://picasaweb.google.com/xtdogx
Got one more cartridge that has the front cut out, along with what looks like an unreleased/homebrew game, titled "Kitty's Catch: A fishing game for two players!". I'll try testing them later, right now my sister has the NES paused in the middle of a game of SMB, and I don't have the heart to ruin her game. LOL
(Rad Racer and Kitty's Catch were already split open, so I just laid the top/bottom next to each other. Jeopardy on the bottom is just an empty case, and the cut out SMB/Duck Hunt on the top left is the same one as before)
One of the pictures is just the rest of the spare chips I have, as well as the flip sides of the previously pictured Mario Bros and Donkey Kong Jr boards. The three DK Jr. boards are on the left, the two Mario Bros boards on the right.
I've got a two-page circuit diagram for the NES AOROM, as well as a brand new copy of RBI Baseball. Question: When I look for box art online, the only images of RBI Baseball I can find are with a gold border, while mine is full-color. Anyone know the significance?
One thing I just found with the stuff this morning was this excellent mint-condition metal pin for Pole Position! Back of it has a sticker that says "Created by Namco". Must find some bubble wrap for it!
Thanks everybody for the interest!

Sorry dude, not sure how I missed that one. You sure it wasn't Matt? I think the last time we chatted through PM was when I bought Arcadia VI, though it has been a while.
To the thread starter, I don't even know what to say. You have a very cool score friendo, and if you want to sell I'm sure my brother and I could make it worth your time...
Yeah that is some mega cool stuff, congrats. I am interested of course in hearing what games you end up having in that mess of stuff, as well as more about the Kitty's Catch.
Like some others have said as well, I wouldn't sell anything if I was you, until you figure out exactly what I have etc.

mrmark, It might have been him, I'm getting you guys confused! I definitely made him an offer to get the two, he never really asked about it, so now I have them, and made him ANOTHER offer to get them =)
oh, and I am thread crapping, I apologize! MrMark, just PM me if anything.

Certainly some interesting stuff. You might want to try contacting d4s, as he collects SNES development items, and he would certainly put it to good use.

All I know is that is some interesting looking stuff. I'm sure there is at least a gem or two in there.
Congratulations on the find!
