View Full Version : Is Nintendo Power still worth it?

I have always enjoyed reading Nintendo Powers, and have been reading issues since my brother got them (NES and SNES days). That last time I subcribed though, it was before the Wii came out, but they were talking about it in the magizine.

Anyways, does anyone here still get issues monthly? Is it worth it?

I had a subscription just lapse on me. I think it's one of the better gaming mags out now. I really stopped getting it only because the mags were starting to take up too much space. :)

I still get it monthly...I have been since 1995. I'd say it's obviously a bit biased, but still not a bad mag overall.

It's what...$12-$15 a year for a subscription? It's still worth it. Case in point...their fantastic RPG issue a few months ago. Probably the best issue since the early days. If they can pull off one excellent issue like that a year, it's worth it.

You can subscribe for usually about $1 an issue if you wait for one of those sales that get advertised on the various magazine subscription sites or Amazon from time to time. It is biased, but they do a great job of covering what's coming to the Wii and DS and I have actually seen them give some bad reviews to some of Nintendo's closer third party developers, so it makes for an interesting read.

That's how it is with pretty much all the official (NP, OXM, OPM) magazines.

Wow, it's even cheaper then before.

Thanks.

I do. I love it. I definitely think it's one of the best mags going!

I used to get NP all the time back in the day, but I stopped not long after the Wii came out. Well, I was at the grocery store the other day and saw the June issue on a shelf and I figured, "what the hey."

So I picked it up, just for old times sake. I don't think I'll be renewing anytime soon, but I enjoyed reading the magazine again. It was nice to have an actual physical thing to hold instead of just getting all my news off the net.

I actually just went on their website, and could not find where to subscribe... Where do I go on their website? I just made a new account because I wasn't part of the "Nintendo Club"....

Right. When we are talking about $12-15 subscriptions, just one or two "excellent" issues a year will basically pay for the whole subscription. But then again, I'll read damn near any video game magazine for basically a buck or a buck fifteen an issue.

Besides there are plenty of worse things you could be spending that money on.

I'm in the minority here in that I still prefer getting the lion's share of my sports and video game news or coverage in print instead of on the net.

I think my subscription just lapsed a month or so ago, but Nintendo Power was the last gaming mag I subscribed to. I think the production is good, there are always entertaining interviews, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. I'll probably subscribe again when I see a good deal.

I enjoyed it before someone else took over, I always like the posters.

Its worth it for the price .... i have bought the magazine since the first issue (yes, i can found it on Mexico :D) and even if has never been my favorite magazine, is quite readable and enjoyable.

The honor for best mag was for the early EGM, pretty much the Ed Semrad Editor-In-Chief era and NEXT GENERATION ...

Nintendo Power has always had (obviously) more insider info on games released for Nintendo consoles

Nintendo doesn't publish Nintendo Power anymore, they publishing rights went to Future US a couple years back.

You get better Nintendo coverage they any of the other mags. You'll see games that don't make it into the other mags, which is usually a plus, though sometimes you wonder why they emphasize certain titles (Astribiy? really?).

It's worth it for the price. I read it quickly, they seem to target a younger demograohic...

Sometimes you get a poster as well...

I think Nintendo Power is worth it. The features they have are pretty cool, as well as the posters. One thing I wish they would do is increase the retro gaming coverage they have in the magazine.

Nintendo Power is awesome when they give you a free game. They haven't done that in awhile.

Are you talking about Counselors Corner?

Yeah, the promos they used to have were pretty good. I personally was a big fan of the e-Reader cards they gave out. If they doled out some sort of cool thing that added something to a game (a promo Pokemon, Animal Crossing stuff, unlock something in SSB Melee, whatever), then I'd pick it back up. But their promos got sort of lame.

I suscribed for a year last year, and I thought it was an excellent magazine. Very informative and entertaining, and I loved the little jokes added in (Mr. T jokes FTW).

It's not nearly as good as it was back in the NES and SNES days (I felt the magazine started going downhill during the N64 era, when they started putting ads in the magazine)...but subscribing is still worth it to me, because I own every issue and I need a subscription to make sure I continue to own every issue.

I guess I'm one of the few people who preferred game magazines when they were 80% strategy guide. A small walkthrough for the first level of a game would normally tell me more about a game than a three page write up.

Which is why I lost interest in gaming magazines when they all collectively switched to the 'lets print material that will be three weeks old by the time the book is out due to the internet' format.

Then again, $15 some-odd dollars is a hell of a price for 12 months worth of toilet reading.

I stopped reading Nintendo Power in 1993 or so. And I completely agree with Gameboy Color.
