View Full Version : [Dreamcast] Pic/description of the original DC power cable?

Hi all :).

I'm trying to figure out which one of my (many) console power cables is the original power cable that came with my (US) Dreamcast.

If someone would be so kind to post a closeup pic of an original Dreamcast (US) power cable; and/or a detailed description telling me what it shows/reads on each side of the cable ends- the plug side, and console plug side; I would be ever so grateful.

Been Googling for the past few days, and haven't found any definite answers :(.

The connector is identical to an Xbox cable, and usually similar to a PS2 power cable. You can usually use the Xbox cable if you need a replacement.

Hi there, ProgrammingAce :).

That's my real problem; I have all these console power cables, and they all look very similar. I need to find out what the Dreamcast's (original) power cable looks like so I may find mine; for collector purposes.

Thanks.

It's pretty much a standard "Figure 8" power cable. Nothing special about it.

isn't one side squared? It's the same as the PS2 power cord. I no longer know what one is my Dreamcasts because they're so extremely similar. Besides, I don't see a Dreamcast going up in value (even collector's value) with an original power cord because it's exactly like every other one like it.

Hi, Kuros :).

Yes, I know that. I know I can most likely use a similar power cable. But like I've already posted, it's not so much that I just want to be able to power up my Dreamcast, but to have/use the original Sega one (that originally came with the Sega Dreamcast).

If any of you have their original Sega Dreamcast power cables, please post a pic, and/or give a detailed description of it (i.e. its color, does it have a stripe/line on the plug/cable itself, are there any numbers/letters on it and if so what are they).

Examples (these are Sony):

Edit: Hi, otoko :). You and I seem to be in the same boat ;) (not knowing which of our cables is our Dreamcast's).

Its a completely standardized cable only the most insane would scrutinize the originality of a standardized power cable. I assume said insane people reside on this board however ;).

Hey there, MrSparkle :).

I assume said insane people reside on this board however.

LOL That was actually one of the reasons why my friend said this would be a good place to find my answer; she said you guys are hardcore.

If it helps, the Dreamcast could use the same power cable as my old VCR.

But yeah, it's a standard cable. If it fits, it'll work.

I'm not even sure that there is a distincive difference at all. I imagine these cables all have the exact same numbering on them and everything. You're gonna need someone to compare two cables that they knows for sure came with two different systems.

There's nothing to say that Sega didn't use a different manufacturer for the cables during the console's lifespan either. They may not all match.

Your best bet is to find someone who bought one of the New-Old-Stock dreamcasts off of thinkgeek.

The Dreamcast power cord is the same as the PS2 cord. Same manufacturer, specs, shape, etc.

HIRAKAWA
UF
VM0292A

HEWTECH-LTK
7A-125V
875W

Those are the markings in both cords.

Hi, c0ldb33r & Cryomancer :).

Thanks for the input.

Hey, ProgrammingAce. (May I call you PA?)

That seems like a good idea :); anyone have one from them? I'm pretty sure I brought my Dreamcast at release.

Hi, izarate :).

Interesting that you mentioned that; I was leaning towards the same cable you mentioned. The only thing that made me doubt otherwise was my friend saying he had the same, and it was for his PSX (original release).

But for it being the same cable as the PS2's- I have two PS2's (one original from release, and the other a debug/TEST), and they both use the exact same cable (different from what you mentioned):
(Just one side.)
KDK-F
KS(or8or5)-15W
7A 125V
(With a CSA symbol underneath.)
('KDK KAWASAKI' on the cord.)

One of my links above shows its appearance (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=psxgeneral&message.id=114639#M114639).

And I have an extra one (same KDK-F one), that may or may not be for my PSX (more on that below).

My PSX (which was brought around its initial release time) has the following cable being used:
[Side I]
E84541
7A 125V
After a few (horizontal) indent lines:
AC200

[Side II]
HSD
SD-019P
After the same amount of (horizontal) indent lines as the other side:
A-4

(Cord's color: solid gray)

Since poster (from- http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=psxgeneral&message.id=114639#M114639) stated the pic to be of a PlayStation, I was thinking maybe I've been using the wrong cable with my PSX, and the PS2 and PSX use the same cable. If this is true, and my friend is mistaken by his PSX's cable, then my Dreamcast cable must either be:

A) (The same cable, izarate mentioned.):
HIRAKAWA
UF
VM0292A

HEWTECH-LTK
7A-125V
875W

-or-

B)
[Side I]
E84541
7A 125V
After a few (horizontal) indent lines:
AC200

[Side II]
HSD
SD-019P
After the same amount of (horizontal) indent lines as the other side:
A-4

(Cord's color: solid gray)

BTW, izarate, when you posted were you actively comparing your own PS2 and Dreamcast cables, or... and also- do you have a PSX?

PS. Sorry for the extra scrutinizing; it would seem I am quite the wacko ;).

Yeah, I had both of them side by side. My PSX cable is grey too and has the same markings of the one you mention.

My Dreamcast cord is black and looks a bit shinier than my PS2 cord. It is not as soft/easy to bend as my PS2 cord. It might be thicker rubber around it.

But my Dreamcast was used so who in the world knows. But If you have one cable that is similar to mine and another one that is a bit more flexible then the more flexible one is probably the PS2 cord. The main thing is that both cords have to be black.
