When I go to print a shipping label through Paypal, it says "The total value of the customs items can not be greater than $400.00 USD", after I filled out the customs form. I've never come across this before, and when I asked at the Post Office they were just as confused as me. I've shipped out expensive packages worth more than $400 overseas before and never had this problem before. Anyone have any ideas?

Why are you so concerned about the value? The customs declaration value does not affect any insurance you purchase. Therefore you could value a package at $50, but insure it for $500 and if you make a claim you would recieve the insured amount.
Also, the total value you declare effects how much duties/customs the recipient will have to pay, so if your worried about your feedback you might want to declare a lower value anyway.
Hope I helped...

OK, I didn't know that. So I can put the value at, say $100, I can still insure it for $1,500? I figured the value on the package would be the max I could insure it for.
Thanks for your help, really appreciate it.

You can't declare an item's worth $100 and then insure it for $1500. The post office won't let you send it, and who knows what'll happen if Customs gets hold of it.

This is accurate, sav127's statement is not. What does insurance have to do with Scrimble's original question, anyway? The sheer amount of factually incorrect advice in this subforum is truly amazing.
I don't know the answer to your question for sure, but I do know that Paypal Shipping and even Click N Ship have extremely limited international capabilities. Obviously you can declare an item's value for whatever when you're in person at the post office, but for some reason, there's an online limit.

Yeah I think I will just bring it to the Post Office, fill out their customs form with the actual value, and ship from there. I don't care if it will cost a little extra. I just want the package to get there safely.
Thanks guys

It may actually be CHEAPER.
PayPal (and USPS Click-N-Ship) force you to use Priority Mail International or Express Mail International. But if the item weighs under four pounds, you can ship it via First Class International, which can be just as fast if not faster than Priority. The only problem is that you can't insure it if you send it First Class.

I really would like to use Paypal to ship it, but I ran into a couple of problems. It weighs about 15 pounds, and won't fit into a regular flate rate box, and Paypal doesn't have the option to use the large flate rate boxes.

For those I just use the USPS website. It ends up being the same cost and the label prints the same, you just have to manually enter their address (it saves your info when you create an account).
