Are Spongebob Squarepants Games Really OK For Kids?
Im Like WTF?Spongebob Games Are Really Appropriate For Kids
What They Play is just a website designed to give parents some information to use before deciding if a video game is appropriate for their kid. I personally think it's a great idea for a site and more parents should reference it. Their reviews, if you read them, aren't too bad and from what I've read so far they're honest.
I haven't seen the Spongebob ad.

Quoted for truth.
I haven't seen the Spongebob ad either, but it's a pretty fucked up show with some questionable humor and it's pretty impressive what they can get away with under the guise of it being "a stupid kid's show". There's a reason the show has a pretty significant adult following.
No idea if the Spongebob games retain the same sort of humor or water it down...I haven't been brave enough to attempt to play any of them.

It's a classic way to draw attention to what you're peddling. If the ad said "Are God Of War games appropriate for your kids" then most people would say "obviously not" and move along. But if the ad says something that comes off as surprising then it's an eye catcher. It's like how the nightly news does that thing "Milk...does it cause cancer? News at 11." Clearly that's a bigger draw than "Tobacco...does it cause cancer? News at 11."

Everything you say is true, but Spongebob is one of my all-time favorite shows and one of the best fringe benefits of being a dad. I just wish there were more of them, they repeat so much.
I have yet to play a truly worthy Spongebob, every one I've tried has been mediocre at best. I hate all the games that convert the characters to 3d models...it just looks weird.

Isn't that site run by former EGM staffer Jon Davidson? I seem to remember his newsletters being pretty good back when he was still with Ziff Davis, before he left and they turned said newsletter into a series of links to new stuff on 1up.com.
I'm still surprised that Spongebob (which I've never sat through an entire episode of) is voiced by Tom Kenny, who is probably best known outside of his voice work for his contributions to Mr. Show; as subversive as Mr. Show is, he would seem an unlikely casting choice for such a popular children's character.
