View Full Version : Perfect Dark 64 Coming To Xbox Live Arcade March 17, 2010

Ever since Nintendo cockblocked (http://www.mi6.co.uk/sections/articles/gaming_goldeneye_for_xbox.php3) Microsoft from releasing Goldeneye 64 over XBLA the most asked question(other than why) was when would Perfect Dark 64 be coming instead. The answer is this winter(which I actually found out on Xbox live yesterday) as the original Perfect Dark (http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/990/990058p1.html) gets an Xbox 360 makeover. Well, sort of. So far it's looking to be a straight port with 1080p support and achievements. But what about online multiplayer and leaderboard scores? Unfortunately they haven't been announced....atleast not yet.
Although I still want online multiplayer I'm definitely going to be purchasing this for one main reason: better control. I've played both the import version of Perfect Dark 64 and Goldeneye 64 and I just couldn't get use to those controls for a shooter. This is most likely due to me being use to shooter controls on both the Xbox/360 and PS1/PS2. So the newly mapped 360 controls should feel very natural to me and I can't wait to try it out.
Edit 2/12/10: The last post has been updated with all the final details with the exception of the exact release day next month.

This is awsome. If we cant have bond, then perfect dark will do fine. It would be nice if we could get a 60fs vesion of this game. That would rock.

I would pay $60 for this if it was fully featured (including at least everything from the N64 version) and full online support with all of the multiplayer modes supported online with everyone. Leaderboards would be most important.

I'm still sore about GE not coming to be, but this is great news.

I'm pretty excited for this. I don't know if it's been outright confirmed that 4J Studios is doing the port again, but there's about a snowball's chance in hell of it being anyone else. Given their track record with their ports, I think it's totally reasonable to expect the framerate issues to be handled.
For me, that'll make this the first Perfect Dark worth playing. I really wanted to love it on the N64, but god damn was it an absolute mess.

Yes.
I am buying this if the frame rate is solid. That is literally the only thing that has to change to get my sale. Higher resolutions would be great too, as it would make split screen that much better. Online play would be super awesome. Single player still being there would be nice but I am both not counting on it and not expecting it.

I would like the modification of having the Classic Weapons (GoldenEye) as multiplayer weapons. Thats basically the only game mechanics specific addition I would support.

Game felt fine for me when playing it on the N64. With regular FPS controls it would be improved though, yes.
And one more thing. God damn! Finally another game I really want the 360 for. I can play it anytime on the N64 with friends, but man. Online multiplayer ftw and coming from the best FPS. Golden Eye was the second best, but Perfect Dark basically had almost everything Goldeneye had plus some cooler weapons like the Dragon secondary, the Super Dragon, the one gun that if you lock on you stay locked on, and my personal favorite, Double Cyclones with magazine discharge(waste someone in half a second.)

Huh? Your the only one not expecting it to be there and is willing to accept that the game isn't there when you spend 1200 points on this...
I'm not concerned since what you just said doesn't make any sense. What we're going to get is Perfect Dark with treatment similar to what Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie recieved, with hopefully the addition of online play added for things like the co-op mode.

Perfect Dark multiplayer was better than Goldeneye. Although I loved the campaign section of Goldeneye (way more than PD). If there were any features I wished that PD had, it would be multiplayer without split screen. I played the shit out of this game during college.

Well this is great... or at least it would be.
The problem is that there is no way to get the expansion pak plugged into the xbox 360. You know what that means... this sucker's gonna be multiplayer only. :(

I think that those are the goals that Microsoft is attempting to hit for this release but they just haven't been finalized yet. If you read the first article I have linked it's even more depressing how close Microsoft got to releasing Goldeneye for XBLA. They were going to give Nintendo a ton of money for it, but ultimately the big "N" didn't want the game appearing on a non-Nintendo console. Understandable but still a shame. Also, it says that the game never came out for the Wii virtual console either but I thought it did:?

I am just aware of how laziness can be with ports is all. Most of us only want it for the multiplayer anyway.
edit: well i mean, want the multiplayer more than we do the singleplayer.

With 4J behind it, I don't think there's anything to be worried about. Multiplayer and Singleplayer are going to be in for sure and they mentioned some new stuff but I don't know what that all entails (other than achievements).
The guys may not have the best track record with their inhouse games (I liked Star Trek: Encounters for what it was, a lot of people did not), but the engine that they've cooked up for bringing N64 games over to the 360 is fucking fantastic. It's a shame Nintendo doesn't hire them to bring stuff to WiiWare instead of just dumping crap on VC.

Was only going to appear on the Virtual Console as part of a agreement to have Nintendo agree to Activision (Which doesn't want to damage its relationship with Nintendo) sublicensing the 007 license to Rare. In other words, a VC release was only going to happen if they secured the 007 license so they could release the XBLA title. Nintendo wasn't cooperative even with that offer and told Activision they'd prefer if they didn't allow MS to get the 007 license.
Too bad Activision was so cautious and wanted Nintendo's blessings, since Nintendo shouldn't of had any say in the matter. Luckily Perfect Dark didn't use any other company's IP.

Thank you for clearing that up for me. It makes much more sense now. Still, I think Rare(who made the game and owns the engine for it) should have been allowed to make it(the updated rerelease) provided they licensed out the 007 license from Activision. Now that I know Nintendo was the main force against this and Activision was just trying to appease them, Microsoft should have just gave the game a different title on XBLA.
Plus, since Microsoft allowed the Blue Dragon series to appear on the DS I would have thought Nintendo and Microsoft had a much stronger relationship. Hopefully the game gets released over XBLA eventually, especially since it's pretty much finished anyway.

You and I would still play it, but I'm not sure how well stripping things out like the music, likeness of James Bond, etc., would go over too well with the fanbase.
I think the best that can be hoped for is some of the work like the engine gets reused for Perfect Dark with perhaps some additional deathmatch maps using some of the Goldeneye layouts redone with a PD theme.
Still, I think Rare(who made the game and owns the engine for it) should have been allowed to make it(the updated rerelease) provided they licensed out the 007 license from Activision.
There was never anything stopping Rare from developing it. My entire point I was trying to get across was it relied on another company's IP (The James Bond license for things like various themes, music, audio, characters, etc.), and without permission to utilize that intellectual property, it can't be released for sale. There's no prohibition on Rare developing it because like you stated, its their property and they fully own the game.

Here are some comparison (http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/211747/perfect-dark-on-xbox-360-looks-five-times-as-good-as-nintendo-64-original/) screens between the N64 original version and the upcoming 360 remake. Obviously it looks better on the 360 but still no word on online multiplayer or the achievement list. I suppose they are just using this comparison to continue building hype for the game and that works for me because I can't wait until it gets released.

That's probably because they still haven't figured out if they can get it in there or not. Personally, I think it would be very foolish of them to not put the effort in, as I think that feature would sell many more copies of the game, especially if they could get online co-op and counter-op included as well.

Shocking, a Gamepro editor cannot tell the difference between 30 and 60 frames per second. Really, really sad.
Also, the N64 version looks pretty good in those screen shots. The 10fps is what killed it.

As for other details (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/p/perfectdarkxboxlivearcade/): up to 2 players can play online co-op, there will be 2-8 player online versus modes, leaderboards, achievements and even local 2 player co-op or up to 4 player versus. Finally, it will run in 1080p at a crisp 60 frames per second. This is definitely a day one purchase.

Has there been any news on how the controls are gonna work? All the rest of my personal little mental wishlist for this game have already been confirmed, the only place I can expect this to screw up now is in the controls. I assume there will be a standard new FPS style setting, I wonder if they will include a 64-style setting as well, hmm.
I'm also curious if they are gonna have that thing they talked about for the original where you could put faces into the game and whatnot. With the 360 camera that is a lot more realistic now than it would have been on the 64.

Activision (I believe) is the only company that can make James Bond games. They signed a deal with Danjaq a while ago, not sure if it was a certain number of games of a certain length of time deal.
I think Nintendo bought the rights to make Goldeneye and just gave it to Rare to make, whereas Perfect Dark is actually a Rare creation.

Why were they able to block Goldeneye?
Theres a link in the first post of this thread. Also, much of the conversation between me and Leo on the first page further explains it. But the short version is that they never technically "blocked" it. They pressured Activision to not allow Microsoft to release it. Nintendo should have never had a say in the first place but Activision still bowed down to them. Doesn't matter now because we get Perfect Dark as compensation. And because of what they did with the Goldeneye deal, Nintendo will never be allowed to rerelease Perfect Dark on the VC or any other platform of theirs.

don't be ridiculous,
PDZ was a great game, the best out of 360's launch.
it's funny how forums moan about it, it was no PD but it was a fine, fine game.
I've had a lot of fun playing it even if it felt a little unfinished in spots, varied locations(not gray and brown colors over and over again), great graphics, soundtrack, awesome arsenal at your disposal, just a great game, have fond memories of it.
and multiplayer options were about 5 years ahead of it's time.
it's what rare does, making awesome games.
wow, it's been nearly 5 years...
as far as PD Remake goes, I cannot wait, downloadable game of the year.
Goldeneye guns, 3 locations from GE007 including Klobb lol (Ken Lobb).
it looks great and framerate is perfect, and on top of that they're asking only $10 for this legendary fps.

PDark really was an upgrade to Goldeneye in almost every aspect, though it got slept on due to it's late release in the system's lifespan and a female main character.
I'll admit that even I'm not enthusiastic about the futuristic / alien storyline but Pelagic II ranked right up their with the original Facility in terms of "fun factor". So much fun running around that level shooting all the guards...

Oh man, I have to say this is awesome news. I have gotten sick of the N64 controller, and I've always hated Goldeneye's / Perfect Dark's framerates and low resolution (really, FPS on standard definition televisions = blah, though in terms of visibility, i.e. enemy size relative to the screen, it actually is better than many PC FPSes from all eras). I downloaded this at 6 am this morning and played two levels before work. I just played two more but haven't been online yet. I'll probably play some versus tonight. As for my opinion, I love that you can actually move and control your character without getting a hand cramp. The N64 has one of the absolute worst controllers for shooters(or anything really). However, although the control of this version is very smooth, WTF is up with that aiming cursor? I'm sure it was like that on the N64 but they really should have changed that. When I saw that the controls said "Spartan" and "Call of Duty" I thought the cursor would be handled in the same way as those games. Um.....thats a big nope on that one. But the game is still fun and I'll eventually get use to the aiming cursor.......I hope.

So I downloaded when I got home from work. There was some lag, but other than that it was fun playing online. The aiming is very hard, it will probably take some time to get used to. The music brings back some good memories from when the game was released in 2000...

Got to play one round of the demo and my 360 went and died on me.
Gimme a couple weeks and I'll probably be able to play some multiplayer!

I'll keep myself happy by thinking that I have the original game cart (was new actually) and it didn't cost all that much more than the download will.
But dang, the framerates. :( Keep us posted on that one!

I have US and Japanese version of PD, unfortunately framerate makes it almost unplayable.
so I got XBLA version yesterday.
man is this remake awesome!
framerate is silky smooth(60 frames per second), dolby surround in 5.1, graphics in full 1080, looks and feels remarkably good.
I've played four missions on hardest difficulty(really you'll get most out of it on perfect agent because missions are much more complex and you won't breeze through it like you would on agent).
I got used to controls in a snap (aiming cursor is actually essential if you're going for headshots, etc...).
so what else there is to say, it's what I've expected and game delivered it in spades.
N64 weighed 32mb's, XBLA version is 240mb's, - that should give you good indication of how much love and work went into it.
I wish Nintendo treated their Virtual Console releases this way.
It's hard to believe that decade old title puts majority of currently released shooters to shame in terms of options, complexity for single player and multiplayer modes.
System seller for sure (just the way Banjo Kazooie and Tooie remakes were).
Trilogy is complete, now we need Conker(not live and reloaded), Killer Instincts, Jet Force Gemini, Battletoads, Blast Corps and we're set ^^
