I heard that the Genesis 2 is not compatible with the Power Base Converter. Is this true?

The PBC has a big chunk of plastic hanging off the back that prevents it from fitting a Genesis 2, but if you saw this piece off or take the guts of the unit out of the case, it will fit, and work fine.

Snap. That sounds awfully complicated..
I don't suppose there'd be a guide somewhere as to which part to saw off without breaking the PBC?

sega genesis consoles are the second biggest bargain in classing gaming (tied with or just behind PS one consoles), just pick up a cheap genesis 1 to get your sms fix

I'd have to actually say that Genesis stuff is even more common than Playstation stuff around here. I don't find all that much Playstation stuff, but Genesis stuff is just absolutely RAMPANT. Which is why I have an extra genesis, doubles of about 6 games, and about 4 extra controllers. It's just everywhere around here.

It's not too hard, here:

All you need is a hacksaw and some sandpaper. I'd recommend taking the unit apart and removing the guts before sawing to make sure all the little plastic bits don't get into the cartridge port or something. Since the unit is just held together with 8 philips head screws, this should be easy.
Also, there are third party SMS > Genesis converters that are more model 2 friendly, tototek (http://www.tototek.com/old.php) has a few (scroll towards the bottom). No card slot, though. Also I believe an official model 2 PBC converter was released in Europe, but it's pretty rare, and also lacks the card slot.

Same jazz happens with a lot of things when a new system model comes out. For example:
-SNES 2 doesn't work with Game Genie or S-Video.
-NES 2 barely works with Game Genie. It'll work, but you have to jam the thing in there, and it's ridiculously hard to pull out. You really need that rare deck adapter.
-DS fat is too big for the e-reader.
-32X is rumored not to work on a Sega CDX.
That's a perk about collecting. Get a bunch of system models and get perfect compatibility :D

Does anyone know if an s-video modified Genesis, with this converter in it, would display SMS games in s-video quality?

Yes. The PBC doesn't change the video signal.
i do not see why the 32x is rumored not to worked with the cdx. the instructions that came with my 32x specify how to connect it to a cdx by way of special spacer that you had to buy separately. i do not believe the actual spacer was ever sold though. i figure it was not sold be cause the 32x bombed, not because of compatibility issues.

When I bought my 32X it had a sticker on the box that said it was not compatible with the CDX, however you are right the instructions showed a special spacer.
However it does work with the CDX, but I think the reason they claimed it wouldn't was because it never got FCC approval or something.

I believe that is correct. It works fine as seen HERE:

I want a 32X for my own CDX system at some point. Still looking for a proper PSU for my CDX though, like many mine was bought used with the regular Genesis PSU, sure it works but I don't want to keep using it.

When I started collecting in late 2003, Genesis stuff was a lot more common than PlayStation, but over the past couple years, things have changed. Genesis sports games, controllers, and bare model 2 consoles are still common sights, but I see bare PlayStation consoles, controllers, and sports games (disc only and complete) a little more often.

Yeah, I bought it on the cheap and it was already pretty beat up with the flap over the cartridge port missing anyway, so I figured what the hey. Of course I wouldn't condone hacking up a mint, pristine PBC :)

Thank goodness. That picture of a mutilated game device had me genuinely worried.

I remember selling that to you, you did a good job sawing off the back end and keeping it neat looking. I can indeed confirm that it wasn't in the greatest shape to begin with.

Sawing it off takes a while. An easy solution is to take an old knife and get it red hot on the stove. Separate top and bottom red and black parts and melt groves into the plastic with the knife (probably best to do this outside or by a fan). The knife will go all the way through after a couple tries or you can do just one grove and that's enough to break it off by hand.

Thanks for all the help, guys.
Unfortunately, my mom was not fond of the idea of buying the PBC 2 from Europe, or a third-party product, or sawing the back of the first.
So I ended up just buying a Master System as well as the Genesis.
