Hi, I just got a Sega Saturn for $19.99. They are going for more than that on Ebay before shipping, so I thought it was a decent deal. But I don't have any games for it at all.

What games would you suggest I go after?

What are the 20 best Saturn games?

Thanks for any replies.

I'll make a suggestion that doesn't fetch three digit pricetags.

Virtua Fighter 2 --cheap and good!

Here are some common (read: cheaper) ones I recommend:
Platformers:

Astal, Rayman, NiGHTS into Dreams, Sonic Jam, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic 3D Blast (esp. the bonus rounds), Super Magnetic Neo, Earthworm Jim 2 (best version), Three Dirty Dwarves -- all games that should be cheap, and are quiet unique in their own ways. SMN is quite difficult (which I LIKE!). TDD is a side-scrolling beat 'em up.

Racing Games:

There are 2 games I recommend. First is Sega Rally Championship. Best rally racer ever, for its day. Awesome Saturn conversion w/great Sega bg music & perfect handling. Second is Manx TT. Although hurt by having only 2 tracks (plus 2 inversions of these for a total of 4 tracks :( ), playing it in first person camera with the Saturn 3D controller (also s/b cheap) it is really cool! The horizon tilts wayyy over when you lean your bike!

3D Fighters:

Virtua FIghter 2 was awesome -- 60fps and smart AI (if you turn it on and fast gameplay. Fighters MegaMix is not as deep but fun to unlock characters, has lots of VF3 style moves, but its visuals are horrible now. Still 60fps most of the time, but low-rez ugly models. Still fun!

2D Fighters: Any of the Street Fighter / Street Fighter Alpha games! Warning : Marvel Super Heroes and Xmen: Children of the Atom have long load times. I particularly recommend Street Fighter Collection, it has Super Street Fighter II on it and also SF ALpha 2! SFA2 is so good....

Shooters: if you find 'em, you'll find 'em cheap: Galactic Attack ("Layer Section" in Japan), Darius Gaiden, and Panzer Dragoon 1 & PD Zwei. Tempest 2000 is awesome too but is also easily available on PSX.

I just got a game called Skeleton Warriors. It was $4.99. I know that is probably way too much for a crap game like that, but oh well, I needed to have at least one game, just to make sure the Saturn worked with my old RGB monitor.

The place I went to only had like 3 games. They also had Madden 97 and Galactic Attack. I guess I should have gotten Galactic Attack.

I know that I definitely want to get Astal, Nights into dreams and Earthworm Jim 2. I love platformers. Even thought Bug wasn't very good, I would also like to get bug.

Now you guys say Virtua Fighter 2, what about Virtua Fighter Remix? What's the difference between those two?

I would also like to get Daytona.

What where the differences between the different Sonic games?

Virtua Fighter Remix is really just Virtua Fighter (the first one) with a model upgrade based on the second game character models. Stick with VF2 unless you pick up VFR dirt cheap or free. ;)

Super Magnetic Neo is available for Saturn? I thought it was only released for the Dreamcast.

My bitchy nitpick aside, Cafeman's list is solid.

I would say Daytona USA..It's simple cheap and Fun....
But,I see that you want this game already..

As for a pricey Great game..I'd say Deep Fear..it's an Import.
I paid $80.00 Special order out of a Software Etc. awhile back.
You will need St-Key cart to play this game on a US Saturn.

I'm not sure if there are any other carts that will allow you to play an import game on a US system................??
I only have ST-Key carts.
Another Import game is Konami Antiques MSX Collection Ultra Pack..
This disc has a bunch of games on it..I'm not sure what this would cost though..I bought it awhile ago.

These may have been posted already...

If anyone has an extra VF Remix, please contact ME! I lost mine years ago. It's just VF w/better visuals but I'm a big VF nut.

Daytona USA is not very nice visually but it is awesome fun, it plays just like the coin-op. Daytona CCE isn't quite as exciting, and they switched the music for some reason -- but it has more tracks and is much more solid looking visually. Get 'em both, they are nearly free if you find them. Also, I recommend Bug as well. It's a fun game -- it's a long game too.

Mmmkay, some questions were asked, some answers expected, so here goes nothing ...

"What where the differences between the different Sonic games?"

==> Sonic Jam is a compilation of the Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog games -- Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. You can switch around the difficulty settings, and also save, so it's an awesome package. You also get the Sonic World, a neat little 3D world with various challenges and Sonic Media (commercials, art).

Sonic 3D Blast is a port of a game made for the Genesis. The Genesis version IMO is mediocre, but the Saturn version is a few steps higher because of the beautiful weather FX and colors, better music, and the Sonic-Team-designed bonus 3D levels which are really fun.

Sonic R is a racing / "find the hidden stuff" game. technically it is neat (on Saturn), but the fade-in popup is a bit too extreme in some parts of some tracks. I loved Sonic R ... for a week. After I unlocked everything and found all the emeralds on each level, the game quickly grew stale to me. It's like half a game, like Travelers Tales ran out of time. There should've been twice the number of tracks. Mind you, the tracks are really mini-3D worlds with some barriers set up, so you can find & take all kinds of short cuts. Again, once you get familiar with it, it gets dull.

Well, I'll tell you, my favorite three saturn games that I own (and keep in mind that I don't own very many) are Guardian Heroes, Nights, and Metal Slug, in that order. I picked up gaurdian heroes (loose) when I got my saturn for about two bucks, because that and Darius Gaiden were the only two non-sports games that Funco had. Boy am I glad I did that....this game is pure greatness.

If it says Capcom on the front and it's a fighting game, buy it. That goes double for NightWarriors: Darkstalker's Revenge, which is one of the best video games ever made.
There are many, many Japanese games available for the Saturn which are great. If you don't have a problem playing pirated games you may want to consider having your system modded and buying a few from a dealer on the Internet. It's the only way most people would be able to find and play Radiant Silvergun.

If you can find it, check out Mr. Bones. A very unusual platformer, only available on the Saturn. Over 30 levels and each one is very different. It has a great soundtrack and a rather amusing storyline. It's one of my favorite Saturn games!

I would say, in addition to the other good suggestions here, try out Three Dirty Dwarves. One of my favorite games and I think one of the most underrated platformers I know of.

-Sega Rally Championship
-Virtual On
-Virtua Fighter 2
-Fighter's Megamix

-Night Warriors: Darkstalker's revenge
-Street Fighter Zero 3 (import)
-Metal Slug (import)
-Thunderforce V (import)

Here are some of my recommendations:

Sega Rally Championship and Virtual On are my favourite two Saturn games. If you see 'em - get 'em!

Also, don't ever bother with the original Daytona USA, just get the CCE edition. CCE is everything the original was, plus more (better graphics, more tracks, more cars, two-player). Probably the only thing about the original that rocks is the music. IMO, it's a bit cooler than CCE's. You must experience "Rooooooollllllliiiiing Staaaaaaaart" at least once in your life through some decenctly large speakers.

Sega Touring Car Championship is recommended as long as you can get an analog controller. Steering with the d-pad is impossible with this game. The graphics are quite good on it, plus the soundtrack is great.

I'll have to disagree with you on Clockwork Night 2, zero. That, Guardian Heroes, and Darius Gaiden were the first three games I got for the saturn, and as far as CK2 goes, I still feel like I got ripped off.

I second (or third) Nights and Guardian Heroes. The Saturn also plays a very good game of Quake...

Mega Man 8 for the Saturn has 2 extra levels, so if you like side scrollers go for that.

Also Burning Rangers is very cool, if you can find it.

Saturn collecting can be very expensive, especially the imports and the RPG's.

However, here are some really good games you can get super cheap (all domestic)

A*M*O*K: Cool mech 3D shooter with really unusual graphics... something about "voxels" that are 2-D sprites viewed from many angles to appear 3D

Die Hard Arcade: Just like the arcade (but just as short :( )

Duke Nukem 3D: The best FFS on the Saturn except for...

Powerslave: The best FPS on the Saturn

Galaxy Fight: interesting fighting game based on Neo Geo original

Herc's Adventures: It's like "Zombies Ate My Neighbors 2"

Lunacy: Bizarre, very Japanese graphic adventure (think a faster Myst)

Last Bronx: late-release 3D weapons fighter

Norse by Norsewest: great sequel

Pandemonium!: awesome 2D platformer with 3D visuals

Sega Rally: ok, this has been mentioned, but it IS awesome!

Mass Destruction: great little tank shooter, oft overlooked!

Sky Target: Not everyone's cup of tea, but I love this 3D Afterburner game

Sonic R: Not that playable, but the graphics sure are purty

Steep Slope Sliders: one of the best ski/snowboarding games ever! Really!

Supper Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo: yes, it came out for Saturn too..

Winter Heat: Great compilation of winter Olympic games

World Series Baseball: all 3 (1,2,98) are great
