I just bought a 26" coby lcd tv and then picked up a top loader over at digital press and im getting diagnol scan lines and vertical ghost line things that remain in place under the graphic. is there anything i can do to make game look normal on this? i understand that it wont be as good as a crt but i just need like a little tutorial on how to optomize my setting best to suit this. also im using the rf switch, if i modded the nes to composite would it help or would i still have this problem? i dont mind the blurriness, i just really mind these lines...very distracting

Going composite is the way, the truth and the light. Ditch the RF and even on your LCD you'll see a huge difference.

Agree .... i love the Top Loader ability to play PAL games but to play all the american releases, the Toaster is the way ... :hail:

Like everyone else has said, score a good-working toaster NES (you can easily get one with some good, common games for the resale value of that top-loader). If you have a hankering for PAL games, disabling the 10NES chip isn't that difficult, truth be told.

Bah, I can personally attest to Coby being maybe the worst televisions on the market.

Vertical bars are a known flaw that toploaders have. There's no way around it. From what I've heard, soldering a composite output will improve the picture quality but the bars will still persist.

Turn the sharpnes down(any video format RF,composite, svideo, component,RGB, dvi, hdmi). keeping it too high will create ghost like artifacts near the edges of everything.

Also

If you get a toaster nes rgb mod it :) thats the best you can get.

The hardware outputs in composite, and not RGB. There's no need to use the Warm Chocolate Pudding mod when the hardware isn't even capable of it.

I have a 52 inch Sharp brand HDTV and those lines aren't really visible. I also run my toploader's RF switch through a VCR though. I don't know if that makes any difference.

If I recall, the RGB mod for the NES involves replacing the PPU IC with the PPU from a Playchoice/VS Unisystem arcade board, which does output RGB.

I had my toploader mod'ed and the lines are completely gone. I have heard the lines dont always go away, but it depends on the person mod'ing it.

The fastest way is to buy a front loader, but since you already own the toploader, I would have it mod'ed. A member of DP did my mod and he does top-notch work. He did my 2600 and toploader and both are excellent. The work is very clean and the picture is clear. His user name is: "ooXxXoo" . Hit him up if you need someone to fix the ghost lines for you.

Indeed it does. But some the colours are off in some games as the chips are not 1:1, the palettes differ slightly.

Personally, I'd go get a second hand 14" CRT telly and plug the NES in with the aerial lead. This is how the NES was meant to be played and the developers designed their games with this in mind.

This is also the only time I won't recommend going RGB as it's a complete mission and the NES was never meant to be played in RGB. Oh, and the 3DO RGB mod is insane too.

RedGhost from pcenginefx.com did my toploader AV mod and the white lines are GONE. The picture is 100% perfect.

It does depend on who does the mod, apparently there are multiple ways to do it.

I run my Yobo clone toploader on my 32" lcd hdtv with mere a/v cables and I don't have any parallel or vertical lines on the screen. They are connected thru a system selector though.

Yes it will save a lot of grief. And replace that grief with constant cartridge blowing and blinking light problems. LOL

Few colors are off, id say less than 1% of games suffer much from it. no big titles come to mind. I have yet to play one game that gets totally messed up.
In most cases the colors are the same just more intense and clearer.
Composite and RF blends and blurs the picture plus adds artifacts this makes colors look muddier.

Playing a rgb nes in vga or component is pure bliss.
It's not an easy mod but very possible and worth the journey if you are a big nes fan.

Here is a link for rgb nes work i did.
http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73894

I did a handful of nes rgb mods and even a famicom, everyone was very pleased with the picture.
I also did a few RGB 3dos for people.

But if you are going to keep the same setup and system turn the sharpness down and maybe the contrast. this should help a little.

Decently refurbed ones aren't so bad...plenty of places online to find instructions to either clean the hell out of the 72-pin connector and bend the pins inward to make a better connection, or just replace it outright, last I checked you can find the connector for about $10

$10 for connector + 20 tops for a toaster is still a lot cheaper than a top loader, and like they said above, toasters have nice convenient A/V jacks
