Dreamcast Mouse Wheel SUCKS

I got a "new" Dreamcast mouse on eBay, but it's definitely not the precise control that I was expecting. First, I couldn't move it to the right. After nudging the little diodes/light sensors or whatever they are, that was mostly fixed. The wheel, however, is a different story. Most of the time it takes two or three clicks to scroll, sometimes just one. This makes Quake III unplayable, as I have no consistency for switching weapons.

Does anybody know how to fix it? How about building a PS/2 adaptor so I can use my spare optical mouse and continue pwning?
