Sorry, I didn't have much time this week to work on a new review. But, in the meantime, I have added manuals for Cocoron (FC) and Hector87 (FC)
@SparTonberry
That's the only part I like about Bravoman, its infinite weirdness. It's what keeps you going to the next level ;)

There was also a canceled Mega CD game that was likely a sequel to Cocoron.

Hey, nice site, and nice links here. Lots of good info to mull over. Gonna give that Western Kids a shot sometime.
A darn shame that Cocoron sequel wasn't released; it was apparently so amazing it caused EGM's staff writer (using that term advisedly) to forget whatever they were doing at the beginning of that sentence.
Cyber Core - I'd like to get the X68000 version of this game, sometime. Will have to do a comparison against the PCE release sometime.

I have the X68000 version of Cyber Core and from what I can tell, it is very close to the PC Engine game, but with better graphics. sounds and music (the introduction sequence, where the man turns into a bug, shows more detail). Here is a video by Vysethedetermined:

The Karaoke Mode (http://tcrf.net/Robo_Warrior) can technically still be accessed in RoboWarrior (by Jaleco, not Sunsoft), if you use a PAR or an emulator with RAM-editing capability.
Though as you might guess, the karaoke screens will just be a graphics-glitch mess. It still runs, though.

@SparTonberry
Wao, thanks for the link, I didn't know the Karaoke mode was still somewhere in the Robo Warrior ROM, this is fascinating :)
Thanks also for pointing out the typo about Jaleco/SunSoft. As a side note, I'm still doing some research on all of this - I find really interesting that some of the staff on Bomber King is actually connected to Aicom (which, I believe, didn't exist in 1987). Did these employees later leave Hudson Soft to create/join Aicom? The Game Boy game does mention Aicom as well... to be continued :)

Actually, Spanky's Quest might have removed the map because the backgrounds were switched.
World 1 in Spanky's Quest used Jiro's tutorial world graphics, Spanky World 2 used Jiro regular World 1 graphics, etc.
(though I haven't played both all the way through myself to say for sure)
And from looking at your manual scan, I guess the evil witch's name was changed from Samantha to Morticia for some reason.

That's a really good point... but still, they could have accommodated something instead of removing the whole thing... oooooooh well..... also, the western introduction sequence always puzzled me, I wonder why it was never included in the Japanese version (or did I miss it?). Maybe they couldn't complete it on time for the original release and decided to add it to the US/European versions (both version were release at least 6 months later, right?).
Great find about the witch's name, I didn't notice that :)

It is correct that the password feature is for the easiest difficulty only (which skips much of the levels, including the bosses, and omits level 5 entirely). The higher settings expect you to finish in one sitting with limited continues.
I think the US manual actually reuses the screenshots from the JP manual (definitely the level 4 screen with the typo "BOLL ON", which was actually corrected in the Japanese game. Yes, I quickly made the obligatory Photoshop (http://www.mediafire.com/view/8k46w60kql5bvan/boll.JPG)).
Level 2's auto-control section has a bug where the CPU is instructed to explicitly "push" the R button when it should've been instructed to "push" the Dash buttons (so you'll lose if you change the R button from its default setting). A bug that, from code analysis was probably only corrected in the Spanish PAL version (at least that was the case when I made a small patch to fix that in the JP, US and English PAL versions).

Lovin your site, I've found quite a few obscure gems browsing through it. It would be even better if you actually had a second reviewers' opinion. There is a whole blank space there for every game, just itching to be filled...
lkermel
06-17-2013, 12:47 PM
@SparTonberry
I believe yes. However, I didn't mention it in depth because I need to do more research - the Japanese SFC version has only two difficulty levels and both use passwords (as far as I can tell). This is interesting because, as you know, the US/EU release has three difficulty levels (Children,Normal & Challenge) - Challenge only gives you one heart and wasn't included in the SFC version... This is why it wasn't as straightforward as I thought, so I really need to do more research on this before I add the information to the site,,, awesome photoshop work by the way ;)
I didn't know Konami fixed the bug in the Spanish PAL version, this is very interesting indeed!!!!
@FieryReign
Thank you :)
Alternate reviewers' opinions are really welcome!!!!! This is why the extra space on each review page is for (and some people did send me opinions in the past). Don't hesitate to contact me if you'd like to add yours, I would be delighted to include them to the site :)

I also found it quite odd that Tiny Toon Adventures 2 used a VRC7. It's hard to imagine Konami wasn't planning an international release when they developed it, so one would wonder why they didn't just develop it for the MMC3 (I'm assuming was) used in the NES version in the first place. Maybe they didn't bother using the expansion sound to at least save them that step for the NES release.

Yep, I always found that a bit odd as well... maybe they had a stock of VRC7 left over from Lagrange Point (as far as I know the game didn't sell in high volumes in Japan). Does anyone know if the VRC7 on TTA2 was the same as the one used on LP? Or a cut down version?

I scanned my manuals for Almana no Kiseki and Meikyujin Dababa for FDS.
(though both are bound rather than stapled, so I probably damaged them a bit. But oh well, in the name of science. :) )
What's interesting is that I noticed the Dababa manual had an ad for Getsufuuma-den in the back. Looks like Getsufuuma was probably originally meant to have SRAM saving. "2-mega + memory backup"

Hey Ikermel! Just popping in to say it's good to see you still cranking material out. How many years have you been manning your site now?
RVG turned 8 years old the other month, and recently I had the thought... how many people in the entire world run a one man video game fansite for 8+ years now (and has been fairly consistently updated in those years)? I feel like you've been around as long as I have, maybe even longer! We are definitely in a very very small class. Heck, there aren't even very many one man gaming fansites around anymore today, let alone ones that have stood for 8+ years!
It's kind of crazy to think about :)
lkermel

@Steven
RVG already turned 8!?! Wahoooo! This is insane!!! I know, time flies! Video Game Den is actually 10 this year! I wanted to organize a little something on the website but I've been way too busy at work. And before VGDen, there was the PC Engine Lounge which I created around 2002/2003, so yeah! It's been a while! I sometimes wish the site was a little bit more popular, but it is a real passion of mine and I'll just carry on updating it! I have also rearranged my priorities and been working on other side projects, including my illustration work and I've also been writing my own video game :)
And you're right, one man projects that run for 8+ years seem to be rare these days! We should be proud of our commitment ;)
@SparTonberry
Ah ah! Yeah, I see what you mean about FDS manuals, scanning them usually destroys them. I actually wait until I can find a cheap copy of a game before I scan one of these. Reminds me that I've scanned a bunch of them, needs now to find the time to upload all of that to the site...

I hear ya bro. Especially on the "I wish it was more popular" bit but you know what, VGDen (and I like to think my site too) has this sort of "underground" vibe going for it, which is cool in its own right. We aren't as popular as the HG101s of the world, but we have our own niche fanbase and our respective sites' general feedback speaks for itself. A lot of things get hyped in this day and age, and people say good things just to be nice. But the feedback I've seen for both of our sites over the years tells me that we're both doing something right.
Congrats on turning 10 later this year. That is quite a feat. I don't know if you're familiar with Flying Omelette, but its webmaster recently announced that the site is no longer being updated. Fansites just aren't very common these days, so yeah, we're a dying breed, man. We're dinosaurs in a world of "Gametube" and gaming wikis. Keep up the passion and keep up the great work. Maybe we'll both make it to 20 in due time. Reason to celebrate and... possibly be a little depressed too if it ever happens. Haha. Kidding. Sorta :p

Thanks again mate, and I'm so pleased to hear that VGDen helped you find hidden gems! I also love Space Hunter, I have a bunch of Famicom games I still occasionally play, and SH is definitely among them. I'm about to publish a review for Ai Senshi Nicol for the Famicom Disk System - if you liked SH then you should really check it out. Again thank you for your awesome feedback - I initially started Video Game Den to share my favorite games with others, and also because I couldn't find any information about them at the time (it is crazy, but neither Wikipedia nor Youtube were around when I started writing my first reviews!). I'm very glad VGDen helped you find games you never heard about, and I literally have hundreds of games in my collection that would deserve to be reviewed and added to the site, so I still have a verrrry long road ahead of me :)

I tried playing Maze of Galious for the Famicom, seemed pretty good but had a few flaws. First, having to retype the password every time you Game Over.
Also it seems with the boss rooms, you have to enter the code without pausing the game. If you pause the game (Select) and then enter the code, you pretty much soft-lock the game (the code will be registered as entered, but the boss won't spawn, leaving you trapped).
I do recall several years a prototype cartridge SHELL of Hero Tonma for the Famicom turned up on yahoo! Japan auctions. (just the empty plastic with prototype label art)
Not sure if I saved it though. :(

You're totally right! I had the password issue listed in my notes but I totally forgot to add it to my review (I played mostly with the invincibility cheat once I got bored entering the password each time I died, this is maybe why I forgot about it). But I will definitively mention it, good catch! I also didn't know about the boss glitch... thanks for the info. About Hero Tonma, I've heard about the proto cartridge shell and I've since been dying to see a picture of it! It would be so awesome if you (or someone here) had a picture of the auction, that'd be so cool! I didn't mention it in my review because I usually want to verify any information I list there... and there are so many retro-urban-legends out there, if you see what I mean ;)

Moero Twinbee (FDS)

I would like to take one minute of silence in honors of all the Famicom Disk system manuals that had to die in order to be saved for eternity. Scanning a FDS manual literally kills it - so these are now in video game history heaven.

AT FIRST THERE WAS DARK DRAGON, FALCHION, AND... Oh, that's the wrong game.
But anyways, no, Castlevania's Easy Mode was only in the Famicom cartridge version.
The only other US releases of Twinbee games that I know of are download-only: Detana!! Twinbee PCE released on Wii Virtual Console and the "3D Classic Twinbee" (based on the Famicom version of the first game) released on 3DS eShop.
Six stages to Moero Twinbee? I was so close to "beating" it then (is like the first game which just loops, I think?) It's like get the lasers and mulit-ship and you are a destruction machine, until one tiny little enemy bullet (which could even be obscured by the background on that last stage, as I recall) slips through.

Arg! Of course!! You're right about Castlevania, I have no idea why I said so in the review! Just fixed it, thanks mate!! :)
About Moero, I checked my notes and screenshots and I did a mistake there as well, there're actually seven stages... my bad... damn, I'm getting old. The game doesn't actually loop at the end, and there is an end sequence (nothing groundbreaking though) and staff roll. You're right, Moero becomes really challenging, especially when you die and lose all your power-ups... Gradius style... utterly painful. About the digital downloads, I never really include them in my reviews, but you make a good point as the 3DS version is not really a straight port if I remember well - you get to shoot more bullets at once right? I'm not sure what it is but the game felt 'busier' and 'smoother' than the original game, but I played it only once... I'll look into it.
Thanks again for pointing out these mistakes, I really appreciate it!!! :)

lkermel this is a sweet website, I've been referring to it lately since I'm mostly unfamiliar with the FDS beyond the obvious Kid Icarus, Metroid, Mario 2, etc.

Yo!
New review and manual:
Meikyū Jiin Dababa - Famicom Disk (http://www.videogameden.com/fds.htm?mjd)
This review has been ready for a while and it was time to post it! If anyone knows about the elusive 6th Konami Card for Meikyū Jiin Dababa, please contact me! I've been looking for it for years without success... I don't think it exists, but let's hope I'm wrong :)
@Bratwurst
Thank you! I'm so happy that you like the site and that it's been helping you find interesting FDS games :) Here is a new game for you! I wish I had more free time to write additional FDS reviews, I still have dozens of FDS games in my collection that would need some love and be added to the site. Oh well, one at the time is still better that none ;)
