Is there a list of exclusive 360 titles from Japan? I'm waiting on a system to arrive and already have a couple of games (DDP Black Label Ex, Otomedius, Death Smiles, Shooting Love, Wrestle Kingdom).
What other non Japanese speaking friendly games are there that aren't already released in the US (even on other consoles)?

Raiden IV, but that will be fixed soon enough thanks to a upcoming NA release. :)

Yea, I was just going to wait for the NA release on that. I also ended up with Shikigami No Shiro III on the Wii instead of the Jpn 360 release. Hoping there are other exclusives that are worth grabbing though. I know a few coming soon (Ketsui in particular).

Are the Japanese exclusive Xbox games backwards compatible with the Japanese Xbox 360?

Tetris The Grand Master ACE comes to mind. It was a fairly early release and can be found pretty cheap now, which is nice considering it's the only TGM game on home console.

@SteveW, I believe so. Once it gets here I'll try some of my Xbox stuff to see. Hoping Metal Wolf Chaos works!

That sounds perfect! Added to my list. Thanks!

That's about the only Japanese Xbox exclusive that I really want. The idea just sounds so great. And it's pretty much all in English too, which totally boggles my mind why it wasn't brought out over here.

It's really a great game! One of my go to games whenever I want some quick destruction.

Mostly English. More than enough to be able to play it and enjoy the "story".

It doesn't appear on any Xbox backwards compatibility list. Japan only has 122 original Xbox titles that are backwards compatible. The only Japanese exclusives (I presume they're exclusive since I'm unfamiliar with their names) are the following.
Bistro Cupid
Ex Chaser
Exaskeleton
Flight Academy
Innocent Tears
Junko Takahashi's Mahjong Seminar
Kabuki Warriors/Zan Kabuki
Kunio Yonenaga's Shogi Seminar
Lake Masters
Nobunaga no Yabou Ranseiki
Petit Copter
Plus Plumb 2
Psyvariar 2: Extended Edition
Rent-A-Hero No. 1
Tenerezza
Tetsuya Nakajima's Othello Seminar
Yukari Umesawa's Igo Seminar
What's Flight Academy? Only title in that list that sounds halfway interesting.

Psyvariar 2 and Rent-A-Hero are both very desirable, IMO. Isn't Magatama backwards compatible? It's an Asian Xbox Original, at least.

Looks like I missed a few titles including the one you mentioned, here's a list a DP poster created that looks to be more complete.

Rent A Hero doesn't interest me. Psyvariar 2 might be okay, I like shooters.

I could swear I saw it on Microsoft's backwards compatible list on their site, but on the US releases list which I thought was odd. I kind of assumed that some publisher was planning on bringing it out over here but never did before the original Xbox's run was over.

I never saw it on any BC list for US compatibility, unlike a few MIA North American releases like Richard Burns Rally, which got within weeks of a US release before Conspiracy had second thoughts and killed it (And appears in most BC list as a compatible US title).
That's why I was surprised when our resident MS cop said RAH almost made it out as a Xbox Original since I never saw it on any list. But it would make sense it was on the list if plans were in the works to rerelease it on the 360, so I suspect your remembering correctly.

Flight Acadamy is an airplane flying simulator. Knowledge of Japanese is pretty much a requirement to play it, I couldn't get off the runway, and I'm not even sure if I managed to get the plane turned on. If anyone knows how to play the game, please let me know.
Petit Copter on the other hand, I would recommend. Basically, all you do is fly an RC helicopter inside of a house and collect stars. It's a short game with not much replay value, but if you like flying fake helicopters and can get the game inexpensively, I recommend it.

Thinking about getting an Arcade. Can you set the dashboard to english?
Also, I'm not really sure, but I think JP use the same power system or whatnot as in the US, but I'm in Europe, so I need to know what kind of power adapter I need for it to work here! I already have an adapter, which I'm using to play NTSC systems up to Saturn, but I'm not sure if it can handle the 360.
From wiki:
"The console uses an external power supply with a 5A / 100–120V AC input and DC output of 203/175/150 (depending on revision) W."
On my power adapter it says
100 Watt
AC/AC Step Down Converter
Model: VC-100W(N)-EU
PRI.: 220-240V - 50Hz 100W
SEC.: 115V - 50Hz 870mA
Or, is the PSU universal, and I can use the one which came with my PAL 360?

You can set it to English, no problem.
Your power adapter is a problem - you'd need a bigger one for sure, at least 250W.
I don't know if the power adapter is universal, though my Singapore 360 wouldn't accept my Japanese Elite power supply - different pin config. But that could be a difference between a premium and an Elite.

Yeah, and I have a PAL Premium and getting a JP arcade, if I'm getting one at all.

Not sure if it will apply too PAL systems or not, but I believe that all of the pre jasper power supplies will work on jasper consoles. I'm using the power supply from my launch NTSC/US premium unit on a jasper NTSC/J arcade console with no issues at all. I would assume that the same would hold true for PAL units.

Adding to the list: Mamoru-kun ha norowareteshimatta!
Another shooter, combo cute-em-up/walk-em-up. Haven't played a whole lot, but it seems fun so far!

Hmm, didn't realize that got ported to the 360. I <3 G. Rev!
(BTW it's Mamoru-kun wa, not Mamoru-kun ha)

I've been thinking of getting a Japanese 360, due to several of the aforementioned games, but is it safe to directly plug into an American outlet? The power supply/brick for the 360 is huge and makes me nervous.

It works perfectly, I bought one last week and no problem.

For mine, I'm just using the brick from my launch unit on a japanese jasper unit. But it should also be fine to use the japanese brick.

Here's some impressions/walkthrough I put together years ago when it first came out:
Flight Academy - Xbox - Aqua System - 6800 yen
Initial Thoughts
I bought this game out of sheer curiousity, because no one else seems to have bought it, and I haven't seen a single online or offline review apart from in Famitsu Xbox. Well, now I've played a little of it, I can understand why. In short, it's impenetrable. If you don't have a good knowledge of written and spoken Japanese (which I most certainly don't), then you'll find this game very tough going (but not entirely impossible). The first lesson, a trivial introduction to airport procedure, took me more than three hours to pass. The written Japanese isn't such a problem, because anyone can use a Japanese dictionary. But all the ingame instructions are delivered as speech, and this is where most of the difficulty arises.
All the lessons do include an explanatory diagram that tells you roughly what you're meant to be doing, but without an understanding of the text and speech, it's difficult to know how exactly you're mean to do things, what you can get away with, and what you're doing wrong. On the plus side though, there is an online instruction manual with diagrams that explains the controls and instrumentation a little better than the paper manual.
The game itself then. It's sort of like a more serious version of Pilot Wings. Learn to fly a plane by completing task based lessons, and get bossed around by an irate instructor. There's three planes featured: single engine propeller driven light plane, twin engine propeller driven light plane, and a Boeing 747 (!). The latter two become available as you progress. The graphics could probably be summed up as "c1998 PC flight sim," and the music all sounds like the stuff of elevators. At least the simple graphics are compensated for by a consistently smooth frame rate.
In free practice mode, you get to take the plane of your choice out for a spin, untroubled by instructors or control towers. Here, you really get to appreciate the flight engine, and as you'd expect from the developers of Petit Copter, it's immediate and responsive. Unfortunately, the first island environment is rather barren, and there's nothing much to do in the air except see what the plane is capable of, and take in the feeling of flight. (Which is in part what I wanted this game for, so I'm not too dissapointed.)
There's probably dozens of games like this available for a lot less on the PC and Mac, so it's probably not worth your time and money importing it because it's really just attractive on account of its novelty value.
Some Help
Now the inevitable amateur translation attempt. This is mostly as a result of guess work, trial and error, slaving over a J2E dictionary and a little bit of Googling. I've done the first three lessons so far, here's what you're expected to do. Sorry if the 1st one sounds like a walkthrough, but it was a rather complicated experience, and I don't want anyone else to be stuck like that. :)

Lesson 1 - Taxiing and simulated take off.
The instructor tells you to start the engine, so start it by holding L click, and press O. Don't press anything else yet. The instructor radios the tower to ask permission to taxi to runway 35. Once his conversation is over, he tells you to apply power and accelerate to taxiing speed. Push the right stick up to apply power. Taxiing speed is around 15 knots so try to keep at this speed, or the instructor will get angry and disqualify you. You can brake by pressing A. At the first junction, he tells you to turn left, turn using the rudder (triggers) and stick to the yellow line. Follow the taxiway to Tango 2 (the first junction). Turn right here, again following the line. Stop before the red line across the taxiway. The widescreen borders will appear again, and the instructor briefs you on what you'll do next, then he has another little conversation with the tower ("Clear for shimyureted take off"). After this is done, he'll tell you to set the flaps to 5. Do this by pressing B once. Now head out onto the runway, again following the line. Stop when you get to get to the centre of the runway. Now he'll tell you to apply power again. Open the throttle to full this time. Once you pass the first junction, reduce speed. Try to get back to taxiing speed for the next junction. When you reach it, turn off the runway, then turn right. Follow the yellow line back to the parking space, then stop. Congratulations, lesson 1 complete.
Lesson 2 - Take off for real.
You start just before the runway this time. Once again, wait for the instructor to get runway clearance. When that's done, he'll tell you to set the flaps to five. Once you get to the runway, stop and he'll give you another quick briefing. Whack the throttle to full, and take off once you reach a speed of 80 knots. When you get to 2000 feet, level out and cruise for a bit until the instructor is happy.
Lesson 3 - Banking
In the air now. You have to turn a full circle right, then a full circle left. You must bank at 20 degrees. You can tell the angle by looking at the notches on the artificial horizon. From the top: 10, 20, 30, 60, 90.
Thanks to Tokuda for finding this game for me.
Later.
I strongly second the recommendation of Petit Copter tho. It's fantastic. :)
