While some folks wait to subscribe to the reanimated EGM later this year (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/29/egm-sold-to-original-founder-resuming-publication-this-year/), those who currently have a subscription to the deceased periodical (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/06/official-ugo-buys-1up-egm-dead/) have begun receiving their replacement magazine: Maxim. Yes, the mag that controversially scored 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand higher (http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/01/20/oh-snap-maxim-scores-50-cent-2-higher-than-killzone-2-sfiv/) than Killzone 2 (http://joystiq.com/tag/killzone-2) and Street Fighter IV (http://joystiq.com/tag/street-fighter-iv), is clearly the right replacement for the demographic.

A note on the issue of Maxim arriving in mailboxes states that the balance of customers' paid EGM subscription will be fulfilled by the engorging engaging mag. Have fun boys! And, um, sorry to any of those female subscribers. We're sure you'll love all those articles Maxim is famous for.

I was not pleased to see my subscription transferred over. I was happy that Jennifer Love Hewitt was on the cover though. I'll be sending my label in for a refund.

Their articles are honestly the best part of the mag, as their photoshoots aren't that great.

Slightly off topic. I still had a few months left on my subscription to Tips&Tricks when it ended July of '07. To this day, i still get the bi-monthly(?) Codebooks. I recieved my ,maby, 12th codebook and im starting to think I got a lifetime subscription to it.

I've bought a knife based on a recommendation from penthouse and also they sometimes have workout tips. I expect that Maxim is the same (although I haven't bought Maxim in years)

Maxim has a much more juvenile tone than Penthouse.

Plus, as the linked article implied, their game recommendations are often bad, the movie recommendations aren't much better, and the famous girls they drool over are often not very famous or hot. With that taste, I tend not to value the magazine's opinions much.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm kind of insulted that they'd do this. I don't care how high the percentage of male subscribers to EGM was; it was NOT a men's magazine and it's disrespectful to what small female subscriber base did support them to think this is a proper replacement. I wasn't a subscriber when the magazine went under (thank goodness, because I may as well thrown away my money if I started getting Maxim instead), but I was about a year prior to that. So a big "F U" to whatever suit is still holding onto the backwoods mentality that video games are exclusively a boy's club.

I personally think it's dick to replace a subscription with another subscription regardless of the content. But at least they have contact information for getting a refund.

I've actually received 3 issues of Maxim in the last week. Both the May & June issues arrived the same day, and I got the July issue yesterday.

The cover note says to request cancellation by mail, but I didn't want to wait. I called their subscriber phone number, who put my subscription on hold and referred me to their accounting phone number for a refund. They referred me to the subscription agency who took payment for EGM subscriptions. I had to leave a message with them and they haven't called me back yet.

So, I've now got three unwanted issues of Maxim taken out of my pro-rated refund. If you send a written request, they'll probably mail you a couple more issues before the request makes the rounds and you get money back...

Years ago I'd pick up a Maxim if there was a someone I liked in the magazine, that was about it. I admit the captions on some of the pictures were funny, but the magazine wasn't really one I was dying to read.

Kinda pointless for me to bother picing up the magazine when pictures can be found online (on their website or elsewhere).
