I walked into a goodwill and found a cherry mint Nes Challenge Set in the box. The insides look untouched but one thing looked to be missing, the mario 3. Question is though, while looking at the styrofoam tray there looked to be no place for the game to rest. Where in the tray was the game?

Could've been underneath the NES itself, remember that NES pack-in games didn't come with there normal retail boxes they where just cart and instructions.

That's what I thought too but the styrofoam inserts are pretty tight as they are and there's no indentation noting cartridge placement. Were the instructions placed ontop of the console or outside of the styrofoam inside the box? I want to replace the original missing cart, was it marked not for resale?
Like I said it's a nice minty box with the all the bags still wrapped around the individual contents which look to be unused, was it worth the $50 I spent on it? I see brianstoys had a gradded one that went for $$$ crazy money.

1. Graded Video Games = Bullcrap
2. $50 for a complete minty set, worth it IMO.

I'd guess it'd be the same as the Action Set. I havn't opened a new one of those since the late 80's/early 90's but I think the game instructions were in a bag with systems instructions and other paperwork. I did recently open a nearly mint & complete Action Set a few months ago (my Dad got it from a thrift for $3!!!) but I don't remember how everything was situated and it wasn't new or anything either so some things may have been out of place.

I remember someone had a sealed SMB3 with a Challenge Set sticker a while back. Probably here or at NintendoAge.

I think that $50 for a complete and mint NES Challenge Set is a nice price, congratulations with this find! :)

Wow, $3 is a really good price for a NES Challenge Set i must say! Congratulations with this find! :)

Was it that copy with a transparent sticker (or perhaps it was a plastic ribbon or so) that went all the way around (or at least it looked like it)?

Your telling me. All I usually find is just dirty bare bones consoles for $15. My dad found it at Deseret Industries(Mormon Goodwill) in Utah. I am the proud owner now though.
I forgot check to see where the game would have fit though but I'm almost positive the game instructions were in the bag with all the other instructions. I'm sure someone on here must know for sure on the Challenge Set though.

Yeah, that was the one. It was a semi-transparent tape, kinda like what the USPS uses for Priority and Express Mail packages.

I know this is an old thread, but I noticed there was no answer so...

There's indents in the styrofoam and it fits snug right there
