I recently picked up a Top-Loader NES the past weekend for a few bucks. I came home to test it out and the graphics are all scrambled, even after I cleaned the system relentlessly for a half hour. I bought a security bit to open it up and take a peek inside, but nothing looks out of place or damaged. Has anyone ever had any similar issues with these?

Are you sure the AC adapter is the right polarity and whatnot?

Did you clean the games?

Yup, games are clean and the AC adapter is the NES-002 adapter.

Does the cartridge connector looks ok?... make sure there is no dirt or any other object that isn't supposed to be in there....Unfortunately, I have seen some NES'es with this issue in the past, and is either the connector or worst case escenario and by the sounds of it, a corrupted/malfunctioning PPU....

Dunno if it works as well with a toploader, but I know with toaster NESs the best way to make it stop doing anything silly is to bend the cart connectors in the console closer CAREFULLY (with alliteration, apparently). As long as the games are clean and the pins on the 72-pin connector have been bent slightly, I've never had an NES I couldn't make go.

I have a toploader and I think it has loose pins as well. It actually runs better if I remove the top half of the case and carefully insert the cartridge. It's almost as if the spring on the cartridge door puts enough pressure on the cart to knock it off kilter.

I checked all the pins when I had the case off of it and nothing looked damaged or bent. There were some pieces of plastic and fuzz in the cart slot, but I got that all out. Still nothing though....I'm starting to go with the suggestion of a messed up chip.
