And the great merger-of-everything marches on...

I think Carmack explained it pretty well. This is going to give them the financial backing to continue being id. It's kinda messy to be published by competing companies, so making a decision on a single parent company makes perfect sense.

id takes too damn long to produce something anyway.
They have the know how, with some backing maybe they can step it up a notch, or maybe they will drain Bethesda lol, I dunno, but they take a long time to make anything.
I'll hope for the best.

Is it too much to hope that this will trigger the reversion of the rights to Commander Keen back to Tom Hall for some reason?

It could be a good move but yes I have to admit I hate how big the industry and others are getting all this merging etc I hate it! Still I hope this works out. Romero wasn't a fan of it.

Yes, but he made Daikatana.
Maybe now we'll actually get DNF.

Maybe now we'll actually get DNF.That's 3D Realms, not id.
I suppose it is feasible that in the end somehow or another id might end up with the job of finishing DNF, but that seems awfully unlikely.

I wasn't saying he carried any weight just that he commented. I like romero though he did make daiktana :P however carmack was and is the brains so I trust him on this. That would be sweet if they finished DNF

we all know gamebryo is getting pretty long in the tooth. i'd like to see what bethesda could do with an id tech 5 powered elder scrolls or fallout.

Eventually some company is going to snatch up Rockstar too, no matter how hard they fight it. But I'm definitely glad EA didn't get them.
Back on topic, I hope this means that we'll be seeing Doom 4 sooner rather than later.

Any idea of where Quake is going? Quake I was all Lovecraftian and full of NIN music, while Quake II was the Strogos story. Quake III went purely multiplayer, then Quake IV was a sequel to II. Would Quake V start a new story, or wold it just be the next generation multiplayer action-shooter?

I doubt they'd end up developing Quake 5 either.

That sounds like the punchline to a joke. Edit: I better explain myself - as you put it, they went straight to the metal / space marines (MSM?) theme after the awesome Quake 1, and then John Carmack decided that they misstepped when they strayed from that theme. End result, years of rather generic games, all told. While I should admit that their direction seemed naturally inclined that way, it doesn't mean that I have to like it over other stuff out there. Daikatana's spectacular failure probably cemented the misconception in iD staffers' brains that "good looking areas and original weapons = terrible, must avoid."
Although Rage looks / looked (?) promising, so we'll see how this turns out.
We'll see if this is the end of the famed Raven / iD partnership. I hope not, generic recent Raven releases notwithstanding.
