Is there something wrong with the SMS controller, or something?
I have two, and neither seems to work.
On Safari Hunt/Hang On, they refuse to respond correctly.
My SMS Control Stick, however, makes the game run perfectly.
Is it just my controllers, or what?
As with any old system, some controllers work great and others don't. You may want to try opening them up and cleaning them, or use a Genesis controller instead.

If it's a D-pad thing, then yeah, the Genesis controllers are the way to go. I always use a Genesis controller when I play my SMS games. The back breaker was when I literally threw away all my spells while doing a couple jumps in Wonder Boy in Monster Land, where the controller kept registering down when I was pushing left.

From my recollection they didn't work all that well even when they were new. Really poor D-pad.
Here is another recommendation for the use of a Genesis controller. :P

I am in a very huge minority… I have been pretty much been using the original SMS controllers for the past year when playing SMS @_@
I have got used to it.
for grolt,
I thought the Wonder Boy in Monster Land was one of the games that were not compatible with the Genesis controller… It was one of the games (along with Bomber Raid and Alien Syndrome) which led me to discipline myself to play with the SMS controller.

Yep, we counted 8 games over at Sega8Bit (http://shinobiman.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=accessories&action=display&thread=6725). Wonder Boy in Monster Land was definitely the title that made me swear off using the SMS controller from the next game onwards. It's even worse if you try to use that cool little screw in joystick that came with early models.

Screw that. I use my SMS controllers with my GENESIS.
Okay, not really.
Or do I?
No, I don't.

I've got a Japanese MK2000 SMS and the controllers that came with it work great, as well as Genesis controllers. I actually prefer this little jellybean MSX2 Panasonic controller I have for the most part, but thats neither here nor there.

The same one that mysteriously disappeared from my collection?

LOL - I don't think anyone would readily admit to that, seeing as the original SMS controller design was one of the worst in the history of video games. I don't own an SMS (yet), but when I do, I will probably be using Genesis controllers with it like most.

Well, I guess I am really in the minority. I like the SMS controller. It works fine for me. The two worst controllers for me are the 5200, and Jaguar.
