just bought one from japan, wont get here for a couple of days, but anyway, my main question is with the backward compatibility, i know i can get around the games region lock with a boot loader or even a modchip, but what i really want to get rid of is the dvd region lock, anyone know if its possible?

also, to anyone state side with expierence with one, how do the other functions translate ove here? more specifically the dvr and dvd recorder, im also curious as to firmware upgrades, anyway i can still get my psx 7000 up to a 7700?

thanks in advance

The PS2 Action Replay Max has a feature that lets you watch dvds from any region (http://www.amazon.com/PS2-Action-Replay-Memory-Playstation-2/dp/B0007SV0TA). I'm not sure if it will work on Japanese hardware(your PSX) though.

Just got one myself (See finds thread), but I haven't yet poked around with it. I'd like to hack the DVD myself as I have a bunch of region 3 DVDs.

The tuner functions shouldn't work in the states as it's a different frequency range, so that should nullify it for PVR use in the US. It's got all sorts of inputs, though, so you should be able record things directly via component, etc.

I'll fiddle with mine and see what I can get it to do.

na i already tried playing around with tuner, i dont think its impossible, just not really worth the waisted effort, yea thru component i managed to get my satellite goin thru it after i passed it thru my box, tommorow i might try seeing what happens when i pass the satellite cable directly thru the bs reciever, i tried it when i 1st got it but for sum reason couldnt get a picture :(

you 2 know anything about the ghost chip? i manage with reference shots you'd be able to find the solder points and install it assuming this has the same fundamental guts as a regular ps2, but would that get around the dvd region block?

anyway im gonna keep poking around and see what i find, its kinda hard to figure out most of these features without an english manual, supposedly theres an english translation pdf manual floating around somewhere but i cant find it anywhere, all im really trying to do is upgrade my firmware, think its at all possible still?

hey i kinda sorta found a workaround for the psx region lock, my psx seems to play bootlegs no problem, so i guess until a better method is found, this will have to do, you find or stumble across anything on your psx???

It'll play any region DVD, but the PS2 can't transcode between PAL/NTSC, so if you have a PAL disc the AR MAX won't help if your system is NTSC and vice/versa.

but will it work on a psx desr? pal dvds are a non issue, only ntsc, you have any expierence with this?

No, it's honestly not too much of an issue for me as most of my DVDs are region 2 or region free, and I have a region free DVD player already attached to the TV. So I've been lazy and haven't messed with that.

Even if it doesn't work I'm pretty sure theres a Japanese equivalent out there somewhere. You should check the same places you found you PSX.

yes. if i would joined months ago instead of putting it off, i could have answered your questions in one shot. btw, i don't know what here applies since i live in america, and japan has very similar standards to us.

i have a DESR-5700 (last model produced iirc). you CAN record things by running it a few different ways.

up until a few months ago, i had no problem recording tv using a standard antenna i got from radio shack. sadly, since everything is digital now, and the PSX does NOT have a digital tuner, that option is out for me. since my TV does have a digital tuner, i won't go out and buy one of those digital tuner middleman boxes, but my guess is that they work fine.

i don't know if your firmware has been updated, but on my XMB there is an option to burn HDD->Disc, and there is also an option to transcode for psp memory sticks.

if you're running something like digital cable or satellite, you can just run that directly into the line-in port on the psx, and record stuff that way.

you know what the biggest pain is? for some reason there is no component output. Coaxial, S-Video, Composite, and D2/D4.

the D standard was never released outside of japan, so i have this useless D cable in the psx box. to my knowledge, running it s-video is the highest quality you can output it at outside of japan...which is to say, on newer tv's does not look that hot.

for what it does though, i really can't complain. i love my PSX. nothing like a good game of Dekavoice or Operators Side to practice my Japanese...and omfg Sengoku Basara X is amazing. <3

if you have any questions let me know, i've never gone about translating the manual, but i could if you want. it'd be good practice...

The irony being that PS3 cant transcode to PSP....

Any of you got/seen the USB dualshock controller that came out for PSX?

lol i came back to this thread to ask that very same question, i still havent tried it myself, but would a ps3 controller hooked up thru usb/mini usb work?

i cant see why it wouldnt, but something tells me it just wouldnt, i ended up buying a white japanese ps2 controller instead and just plugged it in thru the back until i find one of the usb ones on ebay, but my originaly question still stands, has anyone tried using a ps3 controller on the psx?

edit: also, im curious, has anyone managed to find out how to program the psx controllers to work with tv's or ideally, cable and satellite boxes? i know the tv ones shouldnt be too hard to find as im assumining the television codes would be universal, its the cable and sateliite boxes that got me a little worried

anyone know a cheap but reliable d terminal to component cable i can get for this?

im thinking about getting the Sony VMC-DP15CV D terminal component video cable but at 50 dollars after shipping, its pretty steep, anyone use any other cables to output in higher resolution?

man i need help bad, mys psx just stopped reading ps2 games, they wont even show up on the system wen i insert a game, psx games work fine but not ps2

i think i may have flicked something off wen i was stumbling around inside earlier trying to toggle optical output on, managed to get that working but apparently at the expense of ps2 playability, somebody please pm me with ideas or a translated guide, anything maaaaaannnn =(

I heard these systems are notorious for having a TON of problems...is this true? I was interested in picking one up.

truthfully i've had my psx desr for 2 years or so and never really had any problems outside of trying to burn dvds which i hear is really more a firmware issue and not hardware, yesterday was the first time i ever expierenced any glitchyness, this morning i wake up and it plays ps2 games fine...lol dunno wtf happened but im not complaining

if you can find a desr cheap i'd say go for it, there was a guy on the neo geo forums selling a 7700 model for like 375 with the d terminal to component cables included, lol wish to god i had jumped on that a day earlier, i bought mine (7000) from ebay for around 380 flat shipped with a couple things included so you can definetly get lucky if u look around
