The 'spiritual successor' to Guilty Gear has been released to consoles this week, and I myself have been enjoying it thoroughly. I can't believe that there isn't a thread already, actually. I thought a lot of folks were looking forward to it.

The fighting itself is Guilty Gear on reds. It's a bit slower, defense is more of an option thanks to "Faultless Defense" getting it's own meter, and there's more ground action thanks to the lack of a dedicated launching button. To Hell with you, Dust. You shall not be missed (by me, anyway). I'm on PS3. Hit me up if you want some easy wins (I'm old and slow).

More importantly to the fellow collectors and shwag junkies on DP, the 'collectors edition' is both cheap and superb. The entire 2 disc soundtrack is included, along with a Blu-Ray/DVD tutorial disc that explains the mechanics from both a broad perspective, and also details each individual character's moves, strategies, and some useful combos. The guys from SRK and Dustloop are the ones giving out the sage advice, so you know it's probably worth paying attention. As has been previously noted elsewhere, it's also the same price as the 'regular edition', though the only way to get the game at the moment is in it's collectors edition form. Subsequent printings, should there be any, will be a regular stand alone game without all the extras.

Of paramount import to fellow fighting game fans, though, is the ridiculously good netcode. It makes HD Remix and Street Fighter 4 look like they're running on dial up connections. The netcode is almost supernaturally stable, and lacks the weird rollback effects that mar GGPO and 2DF. In fact, since the PS3 patch earlier today, I've yet to experience lag or latency in any measurable way. Earlier this evening I played a bunch of matches against some guys in Australia, and it was silky smooth. All my gatling combos, links, and specials came out completely without a hitch. I was boggled, especially since I get lag playing Street Fighter 4 with my friend six miles away. Good on you, Arc System Works.

So basically, if you like fighting games, this one is a no-brainer. Pick it up. For those who've already sampled BB, how do you feel?

This game looks really great and i've never even played any of the Guilty Gear games. I do want to purchase but i've been buying to many games lately so I might have to hold off a little bit.

I'll play you guys once this reaches the inevitable 19.99 price tag. Unfortunately I won't be able to play those of you with a 360(sorry Nirvana :(,) but those who have a PS3 then you can listen to my bitching about how the game sucks because I'm not the best at it. Either that or pick out the many flaws most people don't notice while playing games.

I have it and it's fun. I play as Taokaka mostly because she's so fast.

I'm also trying out Hakumen but he's like the total opposite of Tao so it's kind of hard to switch in and out.

My brother gave in and just picked up a copy at Best Buy. I picked Taokaka because she looked hilarious, and I like characters in fighting games that play fast.

I was getting really frustrated with the boss at the end of the game. Damn, she's hard o_O

I had a hard time with Hakumen, but then I just started dashing and throwing him consecutively.

I thought Gamestop was the only place that was giving out the art book? I usually pre-order from Amazon but I reluctantly ordered from Gamestop because of that book.

Got my copy in the mail yesterday but I haven't played it yet because I'm too addicted to Skate 2 at the moment. All the reviews I've read said it's incredible though. Looking forward to playing this weekend with my new SFIV TE stick.

G-Boobie, what system are you playing it on? Think I've still got you on my 360 friends list.

I've got it for PS3, and have loved every minute of it. Arc System Works knows how to make their fighting games! :D
This is just my idea of a spiritual successor to Guilty Gear. That's probably my favorite fighting series, but I wish it got a true sequel.
All of it's "installments" are literally just small expansion packs.

Hopefully BB will have a nice juicy sequel to follow.

I'm lovin' it. I had sampled BlazBlue at the local arcade and have been hooked ever since. I used to only use Racheal Alucard, and now I can't stop playing as Taotaka. I enjoy her spunk and how she refers to Litchi as boobie lady :) Story mode is fantasic, much better than I thought it would be. I'm glad to hear the netcode is running smoothly, so I can look forward to fighting online(PS3).

I picked this up yesterday and played it for a bit, I'll get more into it once I get rid of this cold. I played Guitly Gear on Dreamcast and found the visuals to be amazing, so to me this game was worth picking up for it's art alone.

Yeah... I'm probably maining Taokaka too. I was interested in playing Arakune or Noel, but I just sort of 'get' Taokaka. Her drive attacks are stupid fast: she's a lot of fun.

I thought the Amazon page mentioned the art book, though I could be mistaken. I ended up picking it up at retail, so either way I missed out. :(

I've finally gotten a chance to play my copy (for 360 recently) and I am loving it. Ever since I played Guilty Gear X Arc System Works has kept me very satisfied. Blazblue seems to be a good mixture of all of ASW's past fighters with a splash of something completely all its own. It has:

A soundtrack that rivals Guilty Gear's (same composer)
A story mode similar to Battle Fantasia
A stronger emphasis on ground combat likeHakuto no Ken
And an attention to overall presentation like Sengoku Basara X

I still need to get a better feel for the characters but from what i've seen and played so far the characters still maintain very unique feels to them and the drive button concept really solidifies this.

The lobby style really pleases me. Its something i am shocked i hadnt seen in other fighters on the 360.Seeing your friends duke it out and hoping for "next" is something i've missed in the other fighters on 360 becuase i hve always had the feeling of dread when a more than one friend wants to play and we'd have trying to figure out whos inviting who.

All in all I am happy and I hope they decide to expand on this property in the future. Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus would be a great high note for them to leave off from and Blazblue is a good new chapter if that's the case.

I'm having a hard time getting the character specific achievements in this game. I put it on Unlimited time in versus mode and I proceed to do them, such as shooting the opponent with Tager's Spark Bolt more than 6 times in one round, and it doesn't give me the achievement.

Also, I was playing online earlier. Yesterday I went 3-0, and today I faced some really good players. Definitely lost more than I won. But I'm still going to stick with Taokaka. Only way to get better with one character is to "think" that you are limited to that character and his/her tools only.

I like playing as Racheal for this very reason. Also her Amercian VA sounds like or is Shinku from Rozen Maiden. I got far enough in story mode to unlock Hakumen and Nu. I've been blazin' through the story mode to unlock more of the excellent Teach Me Ms. Litchi episodes. This game is jam packed with content and I wish all fighting games had a story mode like this.

If anyone wants to sell their artbook for a few bucks, I'm interested, though I can't offer anything crazy. I picked up the game on PS3 last night and I'm really enjoying it. I only played a few arcade rounds as Taokaka, but I'm liking the fact that it plays slower than Guilty Gear. Even though the characters can move pretty fast, it still seems a little more tactical and less combo-oriented. I'll post my PSN once I get a headset.

Yep Taokaka has been quite popular in the cosplay community. It's not difficult to see why, since she has a unique character design and she's a catgirl. I've enjoyed using her when I took a trip to the arcade. I've found myself acting to aggressive(though the game is geared towards that mentality) and has cost me a round that I should've won.

So I had a friend come over to test it last night, got a good idea of the game. I mostly played Taokaka, which suits my style. Weak attacks are more for distracting, and the strong ones are slower but balanced.

I'm trying to get an idea of the characters. Ragna seems to be the most logical of all of them, with the most sensible controls. I think everyone else has some kind of strange unique system going on, which is pretty neat. I've seen people talking about "easy" characters, but I'm not really sure who they're referring to. Who are the easy chars, and who are the hardcore ones?

I don't know about easy mode characters, but the best characters seem to be V-13, Rachel, and Arakune. Arakune has a lot of good mix ups, his 'curse' ability causes a lot of headaches, and he has a nearly unescapable corner trap. V-13 has a ridiculously easy to spam drive attack and excellent normals, and Rachel is really good at zoning and resets.

Litchi takes a little more work to get results with, and so does Hakumen. Carl? Forget about Carl.

Calling it a "story" is a stretch. I started Taokaka first, knowing it would be silly, then tried Ragna, figuring it would be more serious. Not as different as I'd hoped. Good, but still, it's a fighting game story.

I will say that I like this format more than "this year in the King of Iron Fist Tournament..."

Technically, the game hasn't been released yet. The regular edition ships this week. I think those are good sales numbers for a limited editon of a game...

There's only two GameStops within 30 miles of me that show availability on PS3. As for Best Buy, only one store in the search radius has it, but they have it on both platforms.

There will NOT be a price drop anytime soon, at least for PS3 I can guarantee that. It's a possibility that the REGULAR edition will drop in price soon, but you should snatch up the LE on PS3 if you see it. The 360 LE might get a drop, and I'm fairly certain the normal edition will be a tough sell on 360.

Uh, no. It was released. It is also not sold out everywhere. Each of the four Best Buy locations local to me have at least two copies in stock. Two of them actually had them on the manager's sale table this weekend at 30% off. Fewer PS3 than 360 copies were pressed because of the installed base yet it's obvious that the PS3 sold slightly better. Plenty of people have fighting sticks or pads on the 360 after SFIV, so I doubt the PS3 version will continue to outsell the 360 version. You're correct that the second run doesn't come out until next week, but I wouldn't expect the game to sell out anytime soon. Frankly, 130K copies of a fairly obscure fighting game is pretty darn good.

I LOVE landing Taokaka's aerial combos, and mixing it up on the ground with her. However, I get absolutely destroyed by Arakune. Tao doesn't have any really reliable anti-airs, and Arakune's strength lies in the air. I hate fighting him. There was a match where I was in block stun pretty much the whole match o_O Damn curses.

Anyway, I'm honestly not that great at this game yet, but if anyone wants to play me, you know my GT is Cannon Spook.

Europe release with New BlazBlue characters. Damn you Arc System Works, damn you. Now I have to wait for it to sell like crap in another part of the world so I can get the better release at a low price early. I'm interested in the game, but not 60 dollars interested. Hopefully the new characters turn out to be false, because I can then buy the US version earlier and I won't need to have an incomplete version(incomplete as in, even if I have DLC it's still incomplete as it's all not on disc.)

BlazBlue is coming to Europe early next year thanks to PQube, a company so new their website isn’t even live. Their announcement also had a slip of the keyboard and leaked Arc System Works’ future plans.

PQube says the European release will have “new gameplay content not available anywhere, like new characters and moves.” While PQube says the content will not be available anywhere else, Arc System Works and Aksys will probably release the extra characters as downloadable content.

Nah. There'll be 'new' characters.

Why no GG characters? ASW doesn't own the Guilty Gear IP anymore: Sammy does. This is why Blazblue is an entirely new roster of characters instead of Guilty Gear XXX # Double # Buckets Wainwright Reload.

Shockingly, I see that Kupomogli has posted a half-cocked screed decrying the horrible actions of ASW, despite NOT EVEN OWNING THE GAME YET. Might I suggest that we wait and see how Aksys and co. handle any new characters and/or movesets before we start flaming them? Just saying.

Well, from what I hear, they own all the characters in GG up through the Reloaded revision..

Do you have a source on this?

Shockingly, I see that Kupomogli has posted a half-cocked screed decrying the horrible actions of ASW, despite NOT EVEN OWNING THE GAME YET. Might I suggest that we wait and see how Aksys and co. handle any new characters and/or movesets before we start flaming them? Just saying.

Kupomogli trivia: He apparently once annoyed the readers and author of the RPGamer letters column (http://www.rpgamer.com/ask/cast/Q1-2004/aa010704.html) so much that they set up a Livejournal account (http://kupomogli.livejournal.com/) just for posting and mocking his letters.

Kupomogli, of course, kept sending letters, willfully ignorant of how unpopular he was. This is the sort of person we're dealing with here.

I remember that. After Andrew Long stopped doing letters I still sent them for a little bit, then got bored since it wasn't the same person anymore. There were other people previously like Thor, Duff, and Google but I wrote in frequently when Long was doing it.

After reading what I wrote on some of them though, there were quite a few mistakes I made. Naming of a Castlevania title, accidently said one and meant another. The numbers I threw out there were apparently random. At the time of sending a letter we were in the sixth generation of gaming consoles, throwing out there that I owned 90 RPG titles on one, beaten 120 on another. I never actually counted how many games I had previously, but my PSX alone I have a little over 100 titles and haven't bought one since that generation of games ended, almost all of those RPG titles(I haven't purchased any PSX games since the next gen.)

Also noticed that was when I disliked Star Ocean 2. Mainly since it was just press a button and your characters moved and attacked on their own. Opinion sortof changed as you do have control of your placement of when you attack, but not complete control. I also disliked it because when playing as Claude, you really don't start the game for a whole two hours in.

Not so much of a jerk anymore. I only hate half as much as I used to back then. Definitely don't think so highly of my collection anymore either when I first looked at Digital Press collection pictures about two years ago(my 300-400 games is a joke compared to others. Again, this is me throwing more random numbers out, possibly more games than 400 now that we're in the next gen)

We all post stupid stuff when we're younger. Without mistakes, how would we learn?

I'm intrigued to see what characters they put in the new version. Too bad we won't know anything until a few months down the road. I haven't played BlazBlue in awhile, but I should. I miss jumping around with Tao.

You know, I love Taokaka to death, but I can't help but get bored when I play as her online o_O Don't get me wrong; I'm no pro at this game by any means. However, I win my fair share of matches, but it seems like Tao is really one-dimensional. So I'm thinking about learning how to use Rachel ^_^ I'll be honest; I just wanna throw a bunch of different shit on the screen.
