Universal has secured the film rights to classic Atari arcade game Asteroids, according to a story from The Hollywood Reporter. The report says the movie will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) and written by Matthew Lopez (Bedtime Stories). Released in arcades in 1979, Asteroids featured a triangular ship as players attempted to blast through huge meteors. Players could rotate the ship, but only moved by using a thrust button.
Asteroids is not the only arcade game slated to get the box office treatment. Entertainment mag Variety reported last year of a deal involving the big-screen adaptation of Pac-Man.

I've always thought Q*Bert would make an excellent movie.

Why not? I can see Tom Cruise in the title role. As far as Atari to game movies go, wouldn't a super cheesed out Major Havoc actually be entertaining? Well at least to me.

None of those suggestions even come close to what could potentially be the most entertaining and all-around awesome Atari based movie that could (and should, if there was a just and fair God) come out: Yar's Revenge. Done in CGI in the same style as the box art for the game, it would be pretty amazing. Opening day of the movie, Atari fans dress up in foam Yar outfits and cardboard CX-40 joysticks or Bentley Bear costumes and stuff. Epic. :D

I agree, Tom Cruise would make a great asteroid.

I would love to see a film adaptation of one of my favorite Atari 2600 games, Porky's.

Or it could be a Christmas movie with Tim Allen in the lead role (please dear god make this happen, I hate tim allen and his gay ass Christmas movies)
Hopefully the art direction of the film will stay true to the original vector graphic design of the orginal arcade Asteroids and not the colorized bastardization of the 2600 port.

In that case, the only way to truly watch an Asteroids movie would be on a vector display, and sadly, most theaters are not equiped:( Outside of a laser light show perhaps. Now that would be cool.

It could be like a feature-length version of the asteroid belt scene in Star Wars!

You are playing the wrong version of 2600 Asteroids.

So aliens are using a gravatron to push a large cluster of asteroids to Earth to cast doom on us? Then to the music of Aerosmith space fighters are launched to destroy the incoming rocks with lasers and missiles while heading towards the mother ship!
All I know is be sure you have you're Asteroids cabinets secured before release. Also when will they have a movie:
"Bring it on: DDR"

I remember reading about that a few years ago.
As far as Asteroids is concerned, didn't they kind of already accomplish that with "Armageddon"?
Tetris Worlds should have taught us that adding a storyline to arcade style games is rarely a good idea.
But, then again, Asteroids has much more room for a story than Tetris.
And, if it's done right, any movie can be good.

The producer is behind G.I. Joe: Rise of the Shitty Movie Series. I think the answer is obvious.

For this, it'll just be a generic sci fi.
Possibly in the vein of Armageddon?

Why not just make a Tetris movie instead.
