I felt something come loose under my 1001 series PSP d-pad today and now the right/down buttons don't work without some serious pressing. I have no problem popping this bad boy open and doing the repair myself. Roughly how expensive/complex would the repair be? Also, while I'm under the hood, should I do anything to the action buttons on the other side to make them stronger?

I think that a little Windex and a piece of cloth should be enough. That sounds like a dust/grime buildup.

Maybe it is a bit dusty under there, the unit has seen quite a bit of use in the years I've owned it. Would that particular problem manifest itself so suddenly though? It's not like there was ever a problem before, it was just work ~~~> no work right in the middle of a session. I just thought it weird and wanted to make sure it wasn't a larger problem.

I had a smiliar problem but with the Action buttons. You could open the psp up and check the ribbon cable attached to the part of the chip. Remove it a replace it back on, the close back up and see if it works then. You could do they same to the action button chip so it case if that was loose now it's tight..
I really hopes this works. It worked for me on the action button side.
Best of Luck!! :) :)

All better! I popped that bad boy open, gave it a long, detailed cleaning and it works almost as good as new. I think it took longer to figure out how to get those damned screws off than it took to do the cleaning. Nevertheless, I feel better now. Thanks!
