Metallica Site Rolls Out Game, Free Music
By Chris Marlowe
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Metallica, the most vocal of the recording artists against Napster, is giving away hours of music to its fans.
That's just one in a package of initiatives that include a video game from Vivendi Universal Games, a new album, an international tour and a broadband destination for all things Metallica.
The hard rock band's video game deal grants Vivendi Universal Games exclusive multiyear worldwide rights to what will be a combat action game. Due for release by early 2005, it will be designed with input from Jeff Darrow, the conceptual artist on the "Matrix" trilogy.
According to Luc Vanhal, president and chief operating officer of Vivendi Universal Games, the as-yet-untitled game "has the ideas and the inspiration and the identity of the band behind it."
He said the "St. Anger" CD package will include a teaser clip from the game and that Metallica will be showing a game trailer before each of the group's live performances.
"This is the first partnership of its kind, and I think it shows the way that a video game company and a musical artist can work together," Vanhal said.
Band members will not appear in the game, but their voices will be key elements, and Metallica will also record an exclusive single and video that will be included.
The band's new online presence is scheduled to launch Thursday, the same day its Elektra Records release "St. Anger" becomes available at retail.
The highly anticipated CD, Metallica's first in five years, is being released five days early to address piracy concerns after its contents began appearing illegally on Web sites in several countries.
Metallica Vault (www.metallicavault.com) was created in partnership with the independent Internet service provider Speakeasy. Fans who own "St. Anger" or the future video game will be able to access exclusive content after registering with a unique identifying number found on a package insert.
Metallica has never granted a license to any of the online music services, nor has it made its music available over the Internet through any other method before this.
"We've always wanted our fans to experience our music online," Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said. "But up until now, the existing distribution methods have not passed the kind of quality standards our fans have come to expect from us."
Ulrich handpicked the seven hours of rare and unreleased material that the site will offer initially, which includes 60 live performance selections, though the long-term plan is to include more than 100 hours.
"This is the answer we came up with for getting free music to the band's fans," said Bob Pfeifer of entertainment consulting company Segnana Inc., which worked on the project. "The Napster issue was never about the money. It was only ever about maintaining quality and artistic control."
All of the tracks will be downloadable MP3 files, burnable to disc and completely portable.
Metallica's tour starts June 6 in Nuremberg, Germany. Dubbed the Summer Sanitarium Tour, it will reach the United States on July Fourth and keep Metallica on the road until Aug. 24.

I never saw a band drop so fast in the eyes of so many fans when Lars continually bitched about Napster.
This is damage control & a 3-year late peace offering.
Hey Lars, guess what I'm downloading right now?

Sorry to disappoint you, but many recording artists are in full agreement with Metallica vis-a-vis Napster.
Bashing Lars because you can't get free shit is extremely short-sighted.
Look at record sales these days: lowest they've ever been.

Lars should concentrate less on games and more on learning how to play the drums. Casio drumbeats laugh at Lars.

I would imagine EVERY recording artist agreed with Lars.
They just weren't as vocal & didn't ruin their image bashing file sharing.
Metallica fans had bought every album, paid for all the T-shirts, joined all the fan clubs, gone to all the concerts for 15 years. They try to download the digital version of Master of Puppets because all they have is a 10 year old cassette tape & Lars sends lawyers to their door?
I don't sympathize with millionaires who bite the hands that feed them.
I do sympathize with new bands when their albums are ripped & traded. But, you can argue that it helps them gain new fans.

*Puts in Metallica Cd*
Anyone got any idea where?
EDIT: Oh, it's on the actualy CD. Wow...that looks...erm...like a really early trailer(Oh no! We don't even know what's going on here! Never mind, let's just put a little pre-rendered random camera panning and call it a trailer.) .
The bonus DVD seems pretty Ku so far..though you can see all their magnificent facial expressions...which is kinda scary.

Haha, yah, Lars looks like a troll trying to shit when he's play, it's pretty funny watching him. As far as people saying they lost fans over Napster, they didn't lose real fans, just asshats that didn't want to pay for the music. Napster never should have been. Some of you guys complain against game piracy, but imagine if they made a program that any simple AOLer who could point and click could download the latest Xbox and PS2 games in a matter of minutes. I agree he should have look at Mp3 and not just try to stop it, but look at a way they could embrace it and use it to their advantage. We'll it seems they have come to their senses now and with the new CD you get a DVD and a special code to access unrealeased songs on the net. Not a bad deal for $13.99, not to mention that they went back to the old school style sound and production before the Black album. I don't want to keep going on about this, but if you want to take a little time to read, then this pretty much sums up and explains everything here: http://abysslord.com/metallica.htm

Sure, if by "record" you mean corporate radio and MTV. Much more going on than that, my friend.

Don't forget Iron Maiden's "Ed Hunter"! Hmmm... on second thought let's forget about it.

A bigger problem: they're charging way too much (especially for anything you have to import or is in anyway 'obscure'). My days of paying more than $15 for a CD are behind me. Just because I want the new Sleater-Kinney doesn't mean I'm gonna pay $29.99 for it (I had to look around before I finally found it under $19.99 - not very condusive to me continuing to purchase music).

Agreed. How any consumer could have any sympathy for the price-fixing (it's been proven in the courts) record companies is beyond me. And the artists are getting screwed by the record companies, not the fans. BTW, I'll put down any amount of money that this Metallica game is gonna suck ass; it's "vehicular combat" a-la WWE Crush Hour for chrissakes... :beaten:

Are games like this ever good? I like some of Metallica's music, but I don't think this is where they ought to be headed.

Yeah, believe me I know...but to find the good stuff, you really have to dig. Without much radio airplay, and almost no exposure on MTV...I dare say a lot of really good stuff is being missed.
For the record...I bought more cds three days ago (6) than I have all year! I think the only cds I bought that were even partly well known were the new Marilyn Manson and the Transplants discs.
Here's the complete list of what I bought - I can recommend all of these as good stuff:
Marilyn Manson - The Golden Age Of Grotesque - 8 / 10 - best since Antichrist Superstar
Transplants - S/T - 9 / 10 - Wonderful mix of punk / rock / rap, very original sound
Stephen Lynch - A Little Bit Special - 7 / 10 - Comedian, mostly funny songs, a couple misses
John Mellencamp - Trouble No More - 9 / 10 - Very reminiscent in style of The Lonesome Jubilee, a cover album of old blues, and traditional American songs. I was actually surprised I liked it as much as I did.
Matthew Good - Avalanche - 10 / 10 - My favorite Canadian singer who couldn't get arrested here in the US. His first solo album is 13 songs filled with perfection.
The Postal Service - Give Up - 9 /10 - An interesting mix of electronic, and 80s synth pop; this would be a 10 if not for the silly lyrics on Sleeping In...

Sorry to disappoint you, but many recording artists are in full agreement with Metallica vis-a-vis Napster.
And many are not. I saw just as many on both sides, possibly more on the PRO Napster side. At the time, I got the definite impression that the only artists complaining were those who actually make money off of album sales (which, believe it or not, is a minority by far).
Bashing Lars because you can't get free shit is extremely short-sighted.
I'm not going to bash Lars for that, but getting rid of Napster -- which has legitimate uses -- was a travesty. I think they should have been forced to flush the copyrighted stuff but that was it.
Look at record sales these days: lowest they've ever been.
That's NOT due to piracy. That's due to high prices. And as soon as the record companies figure that out, I'll start buying more CDs new instead of used.

*sigh* This argument can't be resolved using today's standards because everything is different now. Remember, this all happened in (I believe) 1998, back when the economy was still healthy and Napster was well known and well used. The DAY Metallica started to rattle their sabers, Napster use went up twofold and rose at that rate for quite a while. The record companies combined made $25 billion in sales the entire year to date before Metallica started the Napster attack. From that day for the next year the entire total sales for companies were... $26 billion.
frankly, I don't listen to enough music to matter in the first place, illegal or otherwise but at the time it seemed pretty obvious that the publicity made people want to buy more albums, not less.
The new St. Anger disc, by the way. Ugh. However, I must admit I find no Metallica album appealing, but this one quickly dropped down the enjoyment pole compared to their other albums.
I'll stick to my TMBG and Andrew W.K. who I'm told makes a lot more people cringe than Metallica :-D Such is life.

Metallica died in September '86 when Cliff died here in Sweden. (yes I was among those who saw his last bassolo) Metallica were my biggest heros when I was young but now I only get angry when I hear about them. I really can't understand how people can listen to them any longer. Cliff would be (is) quite mad if he got to listen what they have done since Master of puppets.
