You know what the best thing about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time is? Throwing enemies into the screen. Thankfully, that feature is retained in the upcoming XBLA remake (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/11/tmnt-turtles-in-time-re-shelled-a-timed-xbox-360-exclusive/). The HD remake is obviously going to be a much prettier version of the original game -- but how good does it really look? The fine folks at GameVideos (http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/25424) have made a stellar comparison video that highlights the sleek new look of this 2.5D remake. Watch all the way to the end to see how even the voice overs have -- for better or for worse -- changed.

Well, that looks dull and generic.

I think it looks pretty good, actually. Kind of a cel-shaded look. Not the best thing ever, but for an XBLA game pretty decent.

The comparison video almost has me wanting to pick it up. I like how you don't have to be *right* on the correct plane to hit the enemies...you can attack in 3D (or 2.5D or whatever you wanna call it) via diagonals etc.

One of my biggest annoyances in games like Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe, the Simpsons and TMNT is just that. OMG I'm right next to the guy...but why am I not hitting him? Oh, I was one pixel off? Damnit. The "direct port" may be endearing to the people who grew up with the original, but when played sans nostalgia (I never had any beat 'em ups as a kid) the games seriously suck...

If it's 800 points, I think I'll pull the trigger.

I don't know. The original, although a bit more pixelated(possibly due to being taken from emulation rather than an arcade monitor which soothes out the blockyness) looks more like a cartoon while the new version looks like claymation or something...maybe even at a slight loss of detail. It's hard to really put my finger on it. The backgrounds look a lot more pretty though. I think maybe I just don't like the blobs of CGI look.

I agree...the new graphics just have a bland look to them. The original is more colorful and lively looking.

You think they could have at least retained the vibrant colors and went for a more cartoony cel shaded look? This looks awful visually. It remindes me of Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles. The Rondo of Blood remake was interesting with some new ideas implemented and the collectibles, but the 3D was so dull visually (and the hit detection was wonky) that I just stuck with the unlockable Rondo of Blood after 100% clearing it.

Usually at DP people complain that something is too colorful/cartoony/childish.

Are people here really not going to buy this because they think it's not colorful enough or not as colorful as the original? This new version looks like it will play better, so I'm not seeing why it matters.

New version looks kind of bad in 3D IMO. I would've liked to have seen a port, but let's see what it looks like overall and what it throws into the mix.

I think it looks just fine. If it's 800 points I'll get it. I'd be really happy if it included a very stylized cel-shaded mode that may it looks just like a 3D version of the original.

Hmm, when did graphics become a selling point for the people here at DP?

I agree that at 800 points, I will pick it up as well

Because it is a modern remake with graphics that are less appealing than the 18 year old original.

I will still get it though.

So what you are saying is that despite what all you guys say about graphics vs gameplay, it's bullshit? So now all of a sudden, graphics do matter?

For 800 points I'll give it a try, then I can say for sure if this pretty version is better.

The voice acting will take a severe hit, since the original had the entire cast minus James Avery.

Modern remake or no, the cool thing I am seeing about this one is being able to hit somebody diagonally like somebody else mentioned.

As long as the rest of the gameplay is retained, does it really matter that a remake is not as colorful as long as they gameplay is slightly improved?

Sorry but the old graphics look 10x better. Would have rather had a remake of the original NES Turtles anyway.

Judging by that picture I think the old graphics look better as well. They should include a filter that lets you switch between the new graphics or old school one.

I'm a huge fan of the original SNES version and still think it looks miles better. If the gameplay feels as good as the original, however, I will probably pick it up. It doesnt look awesome to me but...but it also doesnt look THAT bad.

So, the question begs to be asked -

is/are the original version/graphics selectable or unlockable?

Has this been confirmed or denied in any way?

I'll be purchasing it not only because its TMNT, but to also support these types of games to be released in general. Hopefully they will include the original as an "unlockable" as well, or at least release it on the PSN store separately.

I hope they don't follow your second idea because that would mean you would have to purchase the same game twice(if you wanted both versions). Hopefully they just include a filter to switch between versions or have both selectable from the start.

Like the recent R-Type release. That was implemented really well!

I just played the demo version on PS3 and I have to say, I prefer the SNES version's graphics. And they re-designed Baxter Stockman, to where he looks little like he did in the original game or the old TMNT cartoon.

The sound is also bad, it seems they completely re-did the music and the voice acting leaves alot to be desired.

I played the demo on 360 and it sucks. It controls poorly and the music is just annoying garbage. Being able to hit in all directions just makes it clumsy and frustrating.
The original game was mindless fun, and the remake is basically the same, minus the fun.

i too agree, im hoping the final result will be much more colorful and saturated.

I downloaded the PSN demo and was very unsatisfied with it, the game was not fun at all and lacked the charm that the original games had. Maybe the game is more fun with people, but I highly doubt it.

so its official? pixelated 2d graphics are irreplaceable with 3d?

........... and the voice acting leaves alot to be desired.

The voice acting for the main characters (turtles, April, Shredder) are perfect. It sounds like the cast for the new TMNT cartoon was used. The boss characters I'd let slide as the versions that do exist in the new cartoon wouldn't fit with the old cartoon designed ones. And Metalhead wouldn't be any good if he just sounded like Don, and Cement Man never spoke at all in the episode he was in.

It might lack some of the details that the original had, but i've been having a ball with it. It has good trophy support and the survival trophy is proving to be a good challenge. It is fun online, I haven't noticed any lag.

It seems the purists are bashing it a bit, but from playing through the whole game I can say it's a fun gameplay experience, if not perfect. Worth $10 for fucks sake.

The original one still seems better.
