There are tons of freebie front ends. I just pick whichever frontend you like (and will work with your setup) and run the plain version of Mame. If you're looking for just a quick setup, Mame 32 would work, too.

I don't know much about MAME font ends but if I was building a cab I'd use HyperSpin. Slickest frontend I've ever seen:

X-Men is good. Hey, you asked for software that MAME uses, right? (ignore me)

Hyperspin's cool but you need a fairly good pc to run it smoothly.

I am running MAME .162 with MAMEWah as a front end. I haven't done much configuring yet but then run fine on a 2.xx GHz P4 with 512mb rab and no video card. I don't play a lot of super modern games on it though.
I have played:
xmen
the simpsons
captain america
TMNT
TMNT: Turtles in time
Which all work great, and seem to play exactly like the arcade. Although I encountered my first game with massive slowdown yesterday, which is a bummer. Double Dragon (JPN). It's one of my favorite NES games, but it really starts to cough with any more than 2 enemies on the screen. Anyway, I don't have the power to run any slick front ends, but just wanted to share my specs- to give you an idea how low you can go.

Thats an old PC? I hear old and think a 486 or a newer P75 or something. :-/

You should be able to run Hyperspin then. That would be my advice (just because it's such a nice looking frontend).

I would probably go with Mame32.
