interesting concept, and he's to be congratulated for actually making the portals work in 2d, but i think this is a prime example of how better graphics/hardware can enable better gameplay.
not to say you need a 360 or modern pc to get the essentials of portal (the quake engine would prob be sufficient), but i think basic 3d is at the heart of the experience. much like porting, say, mechwarrior down into a 2d overhead shooter with mech customization (mechwarrior 3050). same basic idea, but a much different experience than the original.
so yeah, i'm not bowled over by this (though technically impressed). also, when i saw ascii, i envisioned graphics entirely composed of text and symbols. probably would have been a bit confusing.

this is really awesome.
I don't think this is a "prime example of how better graphics/hardware can enable better gameplay." Instead, I think this is a prime example of the fact that a good gaming concept can work wonders regardless of the technology involved.
This is Portal. It's ugly and it's 2D, but it's portal and it looks really fun.

I actually think I will like this better than the real Portal as it was more linear than I had hoped.
Looks like you could possibly find various solutions to the puzzles in this one more and kinda carve your own path, er, portal.
This is actually surprisingly awesome, it's cool to see people toy around with good ideas. Kudos to this guy for turning a complicated idea into something simplistic, it'll be cool to see the level designs he comes up with after he fully fleshes everything out.

(It was so good that they actually ported its levels back to the original Portal.)
