Also called Flyers in the US. Basically, advertising material for before the game comes out. Several of them were printed in limited number and/or are for popular games, hence the price. Also, Japanese handbills tend to be a bit harder to find in the US. Carl's prices are actually quite good and I've bought a fair few from him in the past.

Yup!

These were handed out in Japanese video game stores promoting the release of the game. Quite a few, especially late era FC titles, like Super Mario USA (1992) had either limited print runs or weren't promoted as hard.

The most common ones are Zelda, Metroid, Disk-kun/Volleyball, Super Mario Bros 2j, and Pro Wrestling as they were also packed in with the Disk System by Nintendo.

The rest are hit and miss with popularity of the game and the amount of times they appear. Generally most handbills are in the $20-$100 range, but there are a good number of handbills that can fetch anywhere from $100-$500.

I think they can become pricey because most of these were destroyed or ruined 20-25+ years ago. It isn't easy to find some of these in great shape anymore. If you go to a game store in Japan they won't have them and if they do, it is because they literally plastered their walls with them or laminated them.

At least these aren't Arcade/Cave Handbills, some of those fetch upwards of $1,000. :P

Hope this helps!

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't knocking his prices, it just looked like a lot for a piece of paper but I didn't know the whole story.

Thanks guys for the information, I really appreciate it!

I think of them as art and not paper. They look quite fabulous in a float frame on a wall. :)

Oh so tempting. How big are these?

The majority are International Paper A4 Size, with the slightly smaller ones B5 Size.

A4 is 8.25" x 11.75". Almost the same size as a regular sheet of paper, but a little taller and a little less wide.

Hope that helps!

Thanks
