View Full Version : Famicom to NES converter question

I was reading some old articles on some older NES games having converters built right in. So, I checked my copy of Excitebike and noticed it felt heavier than my other games. I popped it open and sure enough, it had a converter!
After a while, I finally got the Excitebike board out of the black box. My question is, how would I use this to play Famicom games? Do I just put the FC cart into the black box and stick it into the system, or do it require I take apart the FC game and put the board into the adaptor, and reassembling the NES cart?

Yes, but I believe you have to cut or file off the two small side tabs where the screws are located.

You might want to give it some kind of handle, lest it get lost in a toaster NES. Think NES Game Genie here.

Turn the black box upside down so that the screw tabs face away from the game. Works just fine.

I actually just kept a couple of strings attached into the screwholes as a "tugging device." Worked fine.

You will have to file the plastic a bit to make the famicom cart fit onto it; no worries if it doesn't work because you have it on backwards, just turn it off and try again.

I don't have mine anymore, or I'd be glad to help you out more -- I bought an actual famicom/FDS and sold the old one.

If you'd like to check out my converter, I still keep an image of it under my (never-updated) blog in this post: http://geek-tastical.blogspot.com/2008/06/converter-works.html

Enjoy your imports.

I had a bad experience doing that with an SNES. It doesn't work anymore...

Ah, my mistake...I knew you had to file something.

Alright, cool. Thanks guys. Now I'm off to Ebay to order Mother and a few others...

In most cases the only screw-hole plastic you'll need to remove/file down is the center.

Also, I've found that some HK bootlegs and multicarts actually have PCBs that are too big/tall to fit in a US cart with the adapter.

Yes, that's why when I got an adaptor, I didn't bother finding a crap game to swipe a case from. I just stuck it bare in a Game Genie.

I did basically the same thing, here's mine (http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=30915). Took a bit of futzing to get a good fit, but I'm happy with it.

As was linked to by someone else in the benheck thread, here is my full writeup on this subject (http://www.classicplastic.net/dvgi/editorials-davidnesconvert.html).
