NAVA = North Atlantic Videogame Aficionados. It's FREE, and YOU are invited to attend.

Previously at NAVA...

- Donkey Kong was turned into a cake and swiftly devoured. Mario never thought of that.
- A NAVA rookie was a single championship point away from swiping the event's most sacred crown.
- Laserdisc games were played (via DAPHNE emulation) all day. And Daphne is still hotter than Kimberly.
- Random customers were killed and burned to death.
- Many games and systems traded hands between attendees (haven't seen an X'Eye in the store for awhile).
- Pictures and video tell it best:

http://www.digitpress.com/images/store/

This time 'round, we're going to take advantage of the Super 8/PowerPak combination, which lets us play virtually any NES, Famicom, and Famicom Disk System game there is. Plus we can sneak in some SNES gaming without missing a beat. Also, love it or leave it, Rock Band is a favorite with us. We haven't had the set out since the December NAVA and with all the new content it's just time to bust it out again. Practice your basic skills for the 6pm tournament. Sign up for the very cheap-to-join tourney at 5pm... here comes the "Save Joe" bit.

Tournament: At 6pm we'll start a 5-set Rock Band 2 tournament. In this tourney, your humble host Joe will front a band of four (for Rock Band n00bs: drummer, lead guitar, bass guitar) in EXPERT mode. The band that scores the highest point total wins the tourney. So that's 5 songs, 15 different players, 3 winners (Joe doesn't count). The winning prize will include a box of random gaming memorabilia: t-shirts, posters, pins, pre-order exclusives, that sort of thing. You'll like it, and there's at least one item in each winners' pack that many store members have asked to buy but were denied. This is why! OH, one note - JOE'S SINGING SUCKS. So you're gonna have to carry him, that's part of the challenge. Good luck with THAT. You're gonna have to "Save Joe" or die trying.

Prepare for an afternoon of intense gaming and trading, and a night of caterwauling (go ahead, look it up)... it's NAVA time.

When: July 25th, noon to midnight.
Where: Digital Press Videogames: http://tinyurl.com/yscakm
What happens: Gaming, trading, tournaments, big prizes! Attendance is FREE. Half price for kids!
What can I bring?: Snacks, soda and beer are always appreciated. Cakes have been very popular as well.

You're breakin' my heart! I had you penned in as the Keith Richard to my Mick Jagger :)

Catch ya next time, sister.

With rare exceptions, it's the last Saturday of every month.

So ... do all the participants need to play in expert mode, or are YOU as lead singer going to be the only one required to brave such difficult territories?

07-12-2009, 11:35 PM
If everyone has to play in expert I'm thinking the winning team might not necessarily be the one that does the best but rather the one that does the least bad. That's pretty damn hard. What song is going to be used?

EVERYONE will have to play in EXPERT mode. That's just the way I roll. Or at least in this particular tournament I roll in that general direction.

"What song" shall not be revealed. There will be FIVE songs, actually. The only hint I will offer is that I am a totally sucky singer so if you're gonna practice, practice on songs that a sucky singer thinks he can survive on but most likely will not.

If our group at large fails at EXPERT we'll drop it down to HARD for a second run... but from what I've seen in the store in the past, this isn't going to be necessary. You have a few weeks, guys who are not kids that play all day long... Bone up on your skills because my voice certainly isn't going to get any better.

I can't sing either, nor do I play this game but i'd be more than happy to goof off with a Kermit the frog singing voice for some good laughs =]

I have taken the day off, so Sarah and I will be there. I've never actually played any of the instruments in Rock Band, so I'm just going to watch that one. I will have played it after 9-9-09 though, so lookout for me after that. :P

I will be bringing a lot of trade/sell stuff, mostly of the memorabilia variety, so long as I can get through it all before then (it's next week already!). I am still on the fence about getting rid of my original Odyssey in convenient carrying case, but I will have made up my mind by then. I'll post what I have before next weekend to see if anyone's interested.

Oy ... practice indeed!

I've struggled with that 5th button on guitar on hard alone for years now, not sure if a few weeks is enough time to master it on expert ... I suppose I'll just aim for not failing out.

Q: as this is a tourney, can we bring our own XBOX guitars?

Lostdwarf

If anyone is going I am looking for the following:

Q: as this is a tourney, can we bring our own XBOX guitars?

A: You can bring your own guitar, or drums, or fancy hat.

quick question: will there be a rock band 1 or 2 drumset?

The one I have at the store is Rock Band 1, but again, feel free to bring your own set if you think it gives you an edge.

Don't let the "expert" thing scare you. We're going to start there. If it doesn't work out for a particular song then we'll drop it down to hard... but remember the scoring in expert will render any team that beats that level a winner over a team playing on hard.

Carry on Wayward Son or Livin' On A Prayer?

LOL. Anyways, I might try to make it up this time as well.

I might bring along my Twin Famicom since I FINALLY got the damn thing to work. All I have is Zelda, Mario 2, Galaxian, and Top Gun: Dual Fighters(Second Mission). But, still I don't recall a Twin Fami ever at a NAVA(I'm going by some albums I saw).

I might bring my Turbo Grafx 16 and Intellivision to sell as well.

If anyone has any spare Famicom carts and/or Famicom Disk System games, bring them. I'm looking for some great games. Prefer them to be complete(Outer Box, Manual, Disk Case, Sleeve, and Disk), but others work too. My biggest wants are Metroid, Castlevania, and Doki Doki Panic.

BTW, I would mind modding a couple of Xboxes or Phat PSP's for you, Joe. I just have to be reminded to put that stuff on a Memory stick for ya. I don't need a Pandora, I can soft mod a battery and soft mod it back to a standard. I got rave reviews about that Xbox that I did. I hope to do more of the same.

I have a Studio 15 on order that will sadly not be here for this NAVA(as Dell estimates an arrival date of August 4), but it will be ready in time for the September NAVA.

Why is this a thing to bring up? How about the fact that it's coming with a 400GB external hard drive?

I plan on making this my gaming rig. I have full sets to go on that drive. So, I can set it up and you guys can play MAME, NES, SNES, Saturn, Game Boy, any system you can think of. Although for CD games, I might need to know in advance so I can bring my spindles.

Also, all my tools will be on there, which means I can work on systems a lot faster(I sadly cannot make Xbox hard drives though, as I need a IDE computer). Joe knows what I'm talking about as to get the emulators on an Xbox with a disc is a pain. I can just FTP with this thing. In addition, if you have a modded PSP or a DS flash card, I'll have those games on this drive so you can grab a couple if needed.

BTW, Joe I can finally make you an Xbox Mod Memory Card, as I can connect my Action Replay to this.

I guess you can call it a "mobile workstation" of sorts.

One great thing that I thought of is a "try before you buy". Say if you see a NES game there that peaks your interest, but you don't know if you'd like it. You can try it with the NES emulator and make a decision on the spot!

Do I sound excited about this? Uhh...HELL YEAH!

BTW, if I sound like a hyperactive 10-year-old or that Nintendo SIXTY-FOOOOOOURRRR! kid, I apologize. It's just that my head is about to explode at the sheer awesomeness of its potential.

I should be there. I am currently looking for ANYTHING Chase H.Q. complete in box, any system would work, I am looking to pay a fair price for any of the titles, as long as they have great condition boxes and manuals. I am also looking for 360 games, so any you want to get rid of, bring them as I might not have them yet. ALSO, looking for mint GB carts, any will do as long as they are in great condition.

I am starting to weed out my Sega Genesis stuff, if there are certain titles you are looking for, please don't hesitate to ask.

If there is anything else I can bring, please let me know.

Also, I have a box with at least 20-30 2600 boxes and manuals in varying condition. Though most are on the lower end of the scale. If anyone is interested in these, let me know. Wow, that's really cool! Do you really have all of them?

I've been looking for a copy of crazy taxi for years and i can't find one. I can't make it to NAVA, but would you be willing to ship a copy? I'll cover shipping and handling and whatever it costs to get a copy.

Make sure you write your return address nice and big so i know who the package is from!

Before you guys get pissed at me for suggesting that, notice how all the games I listed were IMPORTS! Most people don't even know they exist on the Dreamcast and they cost a pretty penny to get for the system.

It's funny, you guys seem to get on our backs about this, but yet you have repros and what have you and it's the same thing. It's being able to play a hard to find title on your system.

I'm not trying to start anything. I'm just standing up for a fellow member and am aware of a lot of this as I know people(and have done it myself for imports and rarities for this system).

But as far as CHARGING for them, yeah, I wouldn't do that. If you want to give someone a copy that's fine, but don't charge for them. I never did when I did copies of these for people.

Just remember, there was a similar outcry when the first repros of rare games were being made. Just look at old issues of the 2600 Connection.....

http://i29.tinypic.com/vnm108.png

I'm not barking at anyone. I'm just stating a point. I made my point and moved on. If you think I'm trying to start something, I'm not. If you read my post, you'd see that I wasn't trying to do that. Joe, if you think I am, then I apologize as that was not my intention. I was just trying to get people to see that there is some good in a situation.

I DO agree with Joe on the statement that no profit should be made on stuff like this. It should be just as a service if someone really wants something. He said what makes you think it's okay to sell them in the store.

But, I brought up the idea of what if they could be given away. If you guys hate me for that, I'm sorry. But, I was speaking from experience and from the people I dealt with, they usually don't like the idea of "backups", but they only do so when it's a game they cannot otherwise get their hands on, but if they find it, they snatch it(that's how my friend got a copy of Rez for the DC).

When the 2600 community first came back into being, it was common for places like Best Electronics or something to make carts of rare games(such as Tooth Protectors and the like) and sell them for people to play. But, the DC games are still technically under copyright. What to do? Give them away! If you see one you can own, then buy it.

I will say that it is my fault for not explaining all of this earlier when I should've. Bottom line is this: I was making a point for the guy. But, it's Joe's final say. To tell the truth, he wrote his comment as I was in the middle of writing mine, so I did not see his comment until I posted mine. It may seem like I was directing it at him, but I wasn't.

I'm sorry if it seemed that way, but like I said, it was not my intention. Can we just drop the topic now? It seems that it's going to get more heated if we don't. I'm sorry I even brought it up, but I was only trying to help.

BTW, Colbert isn't exactly the best choice to be stern. You should've used the Evil Monkey from Family Guy:

That's okay. I got your back, though. I knew what you were trying to do and we both were taken in by this whole firestorm. Like I said, I just hope that it's all over now and we can move on to talking about the event.

BTW, This one is directed at Joe:

Dell claims that my laptop should be here on Thursday. If that's the case, I'd like to bring my 750GB external(since my passport won't be here until Monday), but only problem is is that it needs an external power supply. I have MAME(full 0.132 w/select CHD's), Visual Pinball(with some choice tables), and a few others. It won't be 100% as the drive is kinda full and I cannot put much on it, but it's something.

Would this be a problem? I know you have a MAME cabinet there, but I don't think many people on here have seen Visual Pinball.

DAMN! Why didn't you say so earlier. The thrift store near me had tons of Genesis sports carts. I could've picked them up. But, the crackheads already bought them. You heard right. The bums around here buy shit from the thrift store and then sell them across the street. The store had to stop taking NES games because basically the entire inventory of games from the thrift store are now across the street.

No. They just trade it in across the street. The games that were 2-3 dollars at the thrift store, are now $20-30 at the mom and pop store across the street. What sucks about this is that a lot of the games that the thrift store had were boxed. My friend was able to get Legend of Zelda, Dragon Power, Ninja Gaiden, and Super C complete in box for $30 for ALL OF THEM!

pretty badass, wow. I have an original zelda and adventure of link complete in the box, by far my absolute favorite things in my collection besides my gold ds.

I really want a DC Link cable and will pay well for one. Someone please hook me up.

I am offering $40 for an official Sega Dreamcast Link Cable that is in working condition.

Also looking for a 60 or 120 GB 360 hard drive, preferably with transfer cable included.

It's official. No one seems to be buying the Wii, so I'm bringing it with me. I'm thinking of selling the system for $200 complete in box w/2GB SD card, Classic Controller and Wii Play in box with second WiiMote. I'll also have Wario Land: Shake It, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Super Mario Galaxy for $30 each.

BTW, I've only bought it in May and it's been only used a few times, so it's in excellent condition!

If you just get a drive, let me know. I've still got my transfer kit from my upgrade a few months back.

Don't bring your computer rig, we're covered on game systems this month. Thanks anyway.

I will most likely be there (for the first time in I think two years). I'll consider buying any rpg that I don't already own for the following consoles:

NES
Turbo 16
Genesis
Saturn
SNES

I have some stuff to trade, just ask me before hand I'll bring stuff.

Dave

I was thinking about food. If you guys want we can get a few crave cases from white castle. It'll be like $5 a head. Deppending on how many people put in depends on how much we get. Also if everyone could bring 1 2ltr bottle of soda or 12pk of soda that would be great. Chips and cookies are welcome too =)
