Both of the n64 controllers i bought for a $1 each this past weekend had something in their expansion bay, the one had what looks like a regular nintendo brand controller pak, but it has a mario kart 64 sticker on it, did someone just put the sticker on, or was this some kind of special controller pak?

Back in the N64 days, I don't recall anything of the sort. Are you sure the one is Nintendo brand? Also, don't call it an "expansion pak" because that's what the red pack that came with Donkey Kong 64 was called.

To avoid confusion, the "expansion pack" is the memory expansion that you put into the top of the nintendo. However you probably mean, the controller pack which is where many of the 3rd party N64 games saved game data. It works the same way a PS1 and PS2 memory card works. I am sure many different versions were released by Nintendo and 3rd party companies, but I'm no expert on any cosmetic variations Nintendo may have put on their own controller packs.

Anyway here's wikipedia's entry on N64 accessories. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_64_accessories)

I'm going to guess you are referring to the memory card. I remember my brother's friend having a memory card with some Mario sticker on it, so it is likely that you just picked up a specially packaged one.

Nintendo Power gave away some controller pak stickers early on in the N64's life, which includes Mario Kart, Killer Instinct and Shadows of the Empire.

If you're looking for that on the N64 you're collecting for the wrong system, man! :)

This. My controller pak still has the Wario sticker on it.
