This happened to me on Mario Kart 64. I turned the game on to play a few races with my friend...and instantly noticed the title screen had changed back to the way it originally looks before you complete all the circuits. Sure enough, I checked and all the game data had been erased, including all my time trial records. The next day, I decided to start over and get all the gold trophies back again. I turned the cart back on...and all the game data I had lost was back! Anyone else ever experience something like this?

I had that happen once many years back when I rented Mario 64. I saved a bunch of progress, came back the next day and it was all gone, then I tried again later and it all reappeared. It was kind of odd.

It "erases" because the cart is not making a physical contact with the pins on the console.

Once it makes said contact, the file appears. This is why it's always good to clean both the game and the console periodically.

I've noticed that the same applies to one manually erasing the game save, only to reappear later on. Either it's a ghost haunting either my game cart or the console, or it's because the game and console don't have "good connections" to one another.

Something similiar happened to me with a Playstation 1 memory card back in the day. I had turned my console on and was going to check files on the memory card when I noticed that all 15 slots were empty. Wtf???? There was no way I was going to start all over with all those saves. So I turned my console off and back on again and sure enough all 15 slots were once again filled up with data. Weird huh?

Happens with mem cards too. Same reason?

I think it happened to me on Zelda 1 or Super Mario All-Stars before.

I don't think that ever happened to me.

What DID happen was, while I was playing Super Mario RPG on SNES, I was on the last boss and the game froze. I turned it off, turned it back on, and all the files except the first one was erased. Mine was one of the ones that was erased. So, I had to start all over again.

My Super Mario World cart does that all the time. If, for any reason, the cart fails to boot, or the graphics show up garbled, or something like that...I already know for sure that my saves are gone.
