View Full Version : need help determining if SNES is new

I recently purchased an SNES console that was advertised as brand new/unused/untested. I've bought factory sealed games from the seller before with no problem and all the pics looked fine. However, the consoles themselves are not sealed like games, so is it possible to determine if the console is brand new just by examining the contents? I took some pictures to show you how it was when I received it. Also, it is a Canadian version (box is english/french and model is SNS-CDMW-CAN).

I checked for any signs of wear or any dents/scratches and didn't notice any. Also, the Mario World game, console and video cable came in plastic bags, sealed on one end, as seen in the photos. Any help is appreciated. I'm hoping everything is legit, as I'd like to have a new console as kind of a centerpiece for my sealed game collection.

What's the difference? If you don't know, then considered it sealed and unplayed, and recall the old cliche, the truth hurts. What you don't know can't hurt you.

Looks good to me

Me too, how much did you pay for it?

Looks good from the pictures.

With new consoles controller cords usually come packed with the cord wrapped in a way that's very difficult to reproduce, and on top of that the plastic bags (which show signs of handling very easily) look pretty pristine.

It could be a real un-opened unit or a meticulous re-package.

The question is what does the "un opened" portion of the description mean to you? Are you planning on keeping it sealed in your collection, re-selling it or are you just going to open it up and play it?

If you're just going to play it, it looks like a great condition unit, crack it open and enjoy!

I paid $400 US for it. (fairly close to the original price in '91 when adjusted for inflation)

They way I view unopened is that the contents of the box are unopened. I would never have bought the console if I couldn't see the contents, which requires that at least the box be opened. The way the controllers and power cord were packaged, is identical to how they were in a new NES I had purchased. What threw me off was how the game, video cable, etc, were in sealed bags.

I've asked around with some other collectors and on some other forums. Their consensus was also that the console is indeed new. Either way, the quality is great, so I plan to keep it in my collection. I just wanted to put my mind at ease, as words like "brand new," "unused" and "unopened" are part of what makes up the price.

Thanks for all the help.

It looks new based on the pics. But keep in mind that people have been known to rebag original contents to make slightly used systems look new. But if you just brought it for yourself I wouldn't worry about it. Just play and enjoy it.

Doesn't that warning sticker on the SNES indicate that it is one of the later '93/94 versions, which had much less metal inside, and I *think* do not yellow or yellow as much?

I just noticed this I remember the system had that red lettering warning about child suffocation on the bag and yours doesn't. Can anyone look at theirs and see if they have the red lettering on their bag.
